This thought/memory came to mind while scanning the nasty gas/baseball thread.

I think I've posted something similar before, but it bears repeating and seems more appropriate here.

For about six years we regularly drove to tournaments in the 4-6 hour range. While pretending to be inconvenienced, these long drives were actually our final family refuge, i.e. non-enforced "togetherness", naturally removed from the urgent teenage diversions of cars/malls/etc.

Beyond baseball:
Conversations happened.
World views discussed.
Ideas exchanged.

As a family, those were certainly those were the best of times.

Inhale deeply. Take video and pics aplenty.

MN Mom,

If you ask him, he's a little disappointed in his performance. But when you get to know him, you'll understand that anything less than perfect is not good enough for him!

From our point of view, he had a great day, showed well as a freshman, even had a couple of scouts track him and his teammate down after they hit 80 and 87 respectively on the gun.

Got to play on a minor league field, pretty exciting and hopefully a feeling he'll have again in four years or so!!!
My son and I were discussing the last two summers the other afternoon. The many hours spent in cars, cheap hot hotel rooms, and lousy restaurants... the thousands of dollars spent to watch him sit on the bench and pitch every third game.

We agreed that the time and money spent was worth every penny and more for the memories... We never viewed this as an investment towards a college scholarship - just as a means of helping him to be the best player he can be and live out his dream to the end.

Nothing will replace 17U WWBA last year and pitching in front of 50+ scouts. Or the Omaha tourney the summer before - pitching in a do or die game with 4 umps working the game - two for free because they wanted to watch these two teams battle it out. The teammates - some of whom were drafted, some who are off to the big schools, and some who will be playing at lesser schools - regardless all teammates.

For all the rising seniors and juniors and their parents - enjoy this summer - it really is the time of your life.
