My son just completed his freshman year at a D3 school. If he transfers to a JUCO for his 2nd year can he transfer back to the same D3 school (assuming the coaches are willing to take him back) and still have eligibility for his junior and senior year?

Yes, there are no rules that would prevent this. Just pay attention to the academic credits at the JuCo and make sure they would transfer to the D3

Why is your son transferring? Does he play on a strong and competitive Summer team? Is he a pitcher or position player?
Will he have an opportunity to play "consistency" at the JC ?

Hi, he needs to improve his grades. He is an RHP and will be playing in a summer collegiate league ( ABCCL)
In case you haven’t already… he should talk to Admissions at his current school and make sure there are no barriers to his readmission as a junior. Also, make sure all of his credits earned at the current school will transfer to the juco. Good luck.

I have a variation of the question in my original post. If a D3 athlete having just completed his freshman year, withdraws from college and decides to work for 1 year and then returns to the same D3 school (or another D3 school) as a student-athlete, does he still have 3 years of eligibility?

Yes. You have 5 years to play 4 - once the clock starts ticking

It’s even better than that for D2 and D3. He has 10 full-time academic semesters to play four seasons of participation. The reply from @adbono is specific to D1.
So your son could work for a year (or more) and go back to school with 3 years of eligibility remaining. He could also go to a juco part-time (can't play baseball) during that period without burning any semesters or playing seasons.
