But there is an awful lot of good in travel ball, and anyone who says it's all garbage may think they are really smart, but in reality they are showing their ignorance. Or, in the case of many HS coaches, their foolish pride -- their belief that there is no baseball anywhere better than what they have going on.

Midlo couldn't agree more. The coaches and we include Travel & HS that appear to be self-serving are the ones to steer clear of. At least with travel ball you can shop around for the best program. If it's a HS coach, you really don't have an option unless you have the money for private school. You make another excellent point concerning the status of a high school player who may be the star of that team. Once introduced to an elite travel team, being challenged and pushed to earn a position, one of two things will happen. (1) The kid will work harder and the experience will help motivate him. (2) He will not rise to the challenge and head back to the comfort zone. Hopefully, the guiding forces in his life will help point him in the right direction.
Midlodad while I have been called foolish and proudful I can only speak for myself and am not confident that my colleagues are in concert with my thoughts. I am not nieve enough to believe that there arent more talented players then those that wear our uniform. But talent hides alot of things, one of them is poor coaching. I am confident that the players who leave our organization, leave with a first class education in the game of baseball. I am honored that many of our players, some of which are not the most talented players in our program are asked to participate on some pretty elite travel teams, but exhibit a "know how" to win, rather than a want to win. Know how people are those that make their teammates better. Sincerely thinking, I am not so sure I would have the same success coaching the most talented all the time as I do the lesser talented but more committed to establishing or honoring a tradition, leaving a legacy and proudfully wearing a jersey with it's school's (in most cases their community) name on the front.
Ibach, Shop around? Provided your son is talented enough to make the team that you agree the most with, correct. But what if he does'nt? Oh, wait I know the answer, you create your own. So know the most talented are not the most talented, the best competition is no longer the best competition, the best coaching is no longer the best coaching,...etc. Out of control and you know it.
Playball Another thought, The high school coach must answer to the AD, Principal and influential parent$$. The Travel Coach answers to you guessed it no-one. You have an issue with a parent or player at the high school level, that could get messy. Try kicking off the influential parents kid. The travel coach simply releases the kid and moves on.
Are you honestly telling me that there are not influential affluent parents in the travel team model. Infact, I would think it the other way around, you pay to play, my kids don't, parental issues are far greater on the travel circuit, equal playing time for equal pay. There is far less of a parental influence in the interscholastic mode. The history athletics in america was built around the interscholastic model, the AAU and travel team programs seemed to only *******ize that model and for what. The whole travel system is premised on the ideology that what the interscholastic level does it not good enough and you know as well as I do money controls it. Let me issue a challenge to you, keep your son out of HS baseball this spring. Tell him oh how did Midlodad put it, "On his HS team, he might be the center of attention, but if he joins an elite travel team, he learns he's just one of many elite players and he has to fill a role. Remid him that it can be very healthy for a his development, both as a player and as a young man. Step outside of yourself and really look at this comment that you and he support.
Another issue that comes up with almost all of the travel teams in my area is that they are coached by one or more of the players' parents. While the parents are sometimes (but not often in my opinion) good coaches, they have other motives. It is rare to have a high school program with parents in a head coaching role. Money comes into play here as well as the parent/coach's relationship with the other parents and can and will effect playing time and therefore, exposure.
hey if you dont like it move to another community that allows parents the power to run things so everyone is happy. please let me know where this is so i can one day watch my grandchildren compete there.

heck i know i dont agree with the certain powers that be but again i have to worry about my job, my house payment, PMI, my childs final tuition, or to sum it up its called life, its not fair, the reps losing control to the dems....paying $600 to a charter and not catching a fricking fish, i might go online a bash that clown because he allowed some tool 1st deck hand recommend using a spinner bait in a glacial fed river. it doesnt make sense to me but i have more important things to worry about then bashing his company on a website, i didnt approve of the size of the fence right next to his boat either, oh and another dumb thing this moron charter captain did that "we" didnt approve of and the DNR "wouldn't" take our phone call was.................the governor is our next call to action, his secretary was rude to us as well

Midlo Dad,

I agree 100% with your post. Getting on the field and competing as just another good player against teams/players that are almost all their HS studs is the best way for a player to compare both his level of play and his level of committment to others.
IMO, we should be careful not to paint all coaches (Travel or High School) with a broad brush.

Everything at every level of baseball has one thing in common... There are...

The Good
The Bad
and The Ugly

The results are all that count! I mean individual results, regarding the players rather than the number of wins, championships, or loses.

Some of the greatest high school and youth coaches I've ever known, did not win championships. Some of "The Ugly" have won many championships! And yes many of the great coaches also win big.

The bottom line revolves around what the individual player gets out of the experience. Do they learn something, do they improve, develop and advance, or are they just used to satisfy "The Bad and The Ugly coaches"?

All kids, no matter how talented, need further development to succeed at the next level. Maybe I'm all wet, but IMO the coaches who do a good job of preparing their kids for the next level are the ones I'd want my kid playing for. Lots of kids have won championships and then fail at the next level because they were not prepared. Sometimes this takes a coach who is willing to swallow his personal pride in the best interest of the young player.

Finally... it has been proven, over and over, there are many different paths that players have taken to the top.

Just some observations made over the last 50+ years. Probably not worth posting!

I have found that the highest level of commitment is in our elite teams. The coaches are usually the best coaches who like the players are recruited to a particular program.
Our teams are as follows in order of level of play and coaching:
Rec ball
Select ball
HS
AAAtravel ball
Elite ball
The rec ball is for non committed players. HS is full of all levels of ball players. For years the AAA teams didn't allow elite players now AAA team alowed elite players otherwise they would probably fold. There was daddy ball at the AAA level but wisely they made several rules that removed that from the teams. No dads coaching or sponsering their sons team. All coaches had to have a level 2 coaching certificate except when they were desperate for a coach. The elite teams (20+) compete for players head on and the quality of coaches, program etc determine the level of players they attract. There are no restrictions on transfering to another team. The top teams last year in order were the Intercounty Terriers, the Canadian Thunderbirds, Ontario Blue Jays and several other good teams. Some of these teams have over 100 kids playing at various age groups.
Fortunately the AAA teams (Ontario Baseball ***) have developed a new cooperation with the elite teams. At one point the elite players could not tryout for the Ontario Youth team but now they can. For years the OYT was in last place in the Canada cup but now sweep the CC at all age levels.
This was a classic example of turf wars hurting the Ontario BB. Fortunately the elite teams provided the training competition and the players who played elite were ready to compete in college.
The AAA teams as the kids got older did not have the dedication and training that was necessary to go on to college. Ny son played for his AAA team to have some good baseball but it was not great. I liked him supporting his AAA team and he played other positions rather than just pitch. He had fun but his last year before college he just wanted to play elite. There was no compariosn to the level of coaching and commitment on all sides.

You have to be mentally tough just to get through this topic....Thanks Playball2 for stirring the pot.lol..

The old travel ball for kids to HS /Travel controversy, how does it always get to this?

I am on board with Playball in the fact that I think there are many watered down travel teams out there. Lots of wanna be teams , lots of wanna be coaches.. Lots of people taken peoples money. Now all of a sudden the new thing for everyone is the Exposure!! So much exposure out there I wear my sun block everywhere I go.

Regardless of what level you coach if your first and foremost reason for coaching isnt the kids then your in the wrong profession...
Regardless of the level or the talent level I dont think you coach a player any different. You teach them what a program is.. You teach them to be gentleman and do things the right way. I care more about how my players act off the fields, more than I care the score. I care about how we come off and on the field every inning of every game. How we wear our hats and shirts and yes I make them polish their shoes every game.. Its the little things for me.. However, I have a pretty good feeling about what happens between the lines. We play the game the right way..Regardless of what the name on either the front of the shirt or the back, you play for your team. The old one for all and all for one,, sometimes people get carried away with all the options given that they forget about whats really important.

Whats to young to really travel , for me I thought 15-16-at an elite level was a good time to get their feet wet and intro them to what was coming at 17 and 18 and after. Not to say that the 12u Cooperstown isnt a great thing and a great experience for a kid. But so many things change in the next three years. Tough call and I dont think there are any right answers. At that level for me its a fun thing and more of a vacation with baseball attached. Best thing I can tell you is get around baseball people regardless of the level. You'll know the difference when you meet someone who is.

ibach,

I'm not sure what exactly your intentions are here but as I have seen in posts here and your website that you are tied in with Pastimes Tournys and run showcases in TN at a place named perfect swing.. Now I see you are talking about the best Fall tournament out there. PG's Jupiter Tourny. Let me ask if you were there? Appreciate the game by game recap, but we lost 2-0 to the "scout team" in the field of 16 ,but seems you like talking about the kids from Ga, Fl but none from our area that had great performances. Heck I think three of my players probably showed well enough to get some $$$ this Summer. Hey tell Mr Thomas I send my best..

And as far as what level I enjoyed. I love the game and love seeing a kid get better. Doesnt matter if he is 12 or 22. When you show a kid something and you see it click its the same feeling for me.
As for what level I am most comfortable, of course it is the higher level of play. I enjoy the speed of the game at a higher level, its what I am used to.

Parents if you get the chance to get to Jupiter, its a no brainer... I promise that one will never get watered down... Its first class from the fields to the umpires and everything in between.
The ****** things you see in travel ball make you tougher. Its all part of the learning curve. I used to move my son around just to get used to new teammates and take him to several team tryouts. It was an education in itself. Some teams held 15 tryouts with over 100 at each of them. He learned that he could compete and that he could makje new friends at each tryout. In some cases the instruction was at its best at the tryout as they were trying to impress. One in particular stood out from all the rest. 6-7 MLB scouts at each tryout. Often the highlight of the year for me.

That last post gives a bit of insight into how things are run up there north of the border. A couple questions:

How are the divisions Select, AAA and Elite governed in such a way that dad coaches are not allowed, etc.? Or is it sort of informal in the sense that you can say this team plays more or less on the Elite Level or that team plays on the AAA Level? I don't think there are such defined levels here around Chicago. I think most people know which teams are the "Elite" Teams but beyond that there is no formal definition.

You sort of argued against yourself when you mentioned your son played only one year of Select before college and that was enough to get him ready. Maybe I missed something.

Do you mind telling us where your son goes to school? You seem very rightly to be proud of him.

Deuce,

I agree entirely with your slant on this issue. I deleted my post at the urging of my wife. She reminded me that we should all be in the Holiday spirit, whether it be Christmas, Chanukah or other celebrations. She is right. No need to open a can of worms now. However, after a short vacation and a week away from the site, look out! LOL.

Happy Holidays to All.

PS. This is the first day of winter. The days start getting longer now! Spring is around the corner!

FB I might not have been to clear in an attept to be less wordy.
The AAA city ball is governed by the Ontario Baseball association which at one time was the only ball for high level players. The AAA was governed by the size of city. The local organization had problems with Daddy ball and influential people interferring with teams. They made rules that required a certain level of coaching certification, that did not allow coaching or sponserring your own son's team. It worked quite well.
The elite teams developed in response to a demand for higer level ball and broader travel with higher competition. Many AAA teams would not let traitor elite players play for them but my son's AAA team did.
My son played elite ball from 15 yo until 19 yo. He also played AAA ball up until the year before he left fot Charleston Southern U. There was actually 2 elite leagues origionally but that is a whole other story. The one elite league took over and several teams from the one joined the other league. The dominate league is called the PBLO (Primier League of Ontario). The stories I could tell about power struggles.
The select level is almost non existant now due to falling enrolement. The elite teams are flourishing and have to offer a lot of quality training to compete. I expect things will change as fees to provide these services rises.
Elite ball is totally separate but now there is cooperation between the elite teams and the Ontario Baseball.Elite player can now tryout for the Ontario Youth Team. I guess necessity does create allinaces.

I see that a few things have apparently been deleted after others have commented on them, but before I saw them, so I'm a bit in the dark.

But if somebody suggested that I would tell someone to NOT play for their HS team, they are way off base. If a kid were allowed to get such a swelled head that he wouldn't play for his HS team, then that kid is destined to get his comeuppance in due time.

I do know of one boy here locally who left a school that will have a top baseball team, to attend a school for the gifted where he is pretty much the only kid who can play at all. His HS team and coach are doing nothing for him. But he had a scholarship deal worked out with an ACC team before Thanksgiving of his junior year, because of what he accomplished in the travel circuit.

I have never seen that work in reverse. I think this is proof positive that travel ball can do for a player things that HS ball simply cannot.

That kid still plays for his HS team, though, however hapless they may be.

I am deeply concerned by the undertone of some comments, that may have let the cat out of the bag somewhat. The undercurrent was to the effect that travel ball is a rich kid's playground and not a place to get a good feel for the talent that's really out there.

I do think some folks spend an inordinate amount of money on all this. But I also know teams who do fund raising, and who do everything they can to make the opportunities affordable. One of the very best travel programs in this country is ABSOLUTELY FREE to its players and their families. But again, it appears that some already think they know all there is to know and they don't need to hear the facts.

Which is as good a sign as any that it's time to leave this thread.
Deuce Thanks for the response. My intention is to enter into interesting and informative discussions pertaining to HS & Travel Baseball. Hopefully, the guys at TBS-USA can provide a fresh perspective to some of the threads particularly travel ball related.
Yes, we have restructured and are now focusing on tournament promotion and we cover all the bases! Professional Tournament Promotion. Real Time Scores & updates, Action Photos, Game recaps & highlights! Detailed coverage, we can assist with drawing the top teams. We highlight the kids and coaches underscoring all the exciting moments! TBS-USA events are "must attend" tournaments. Deuce, we do cover the national demographic, therefore you will not always find stories on the Illinois players. We have a nationwide network of contributors. I was not at the event you inquired about, the game recaps were provided by a TBS staffer based in Alabama.
We have gathered information on the 2008 and younger players in Illinois. We have some of the players we consider top Illinois prospects now posted on another thread. We are very familiar with the two travel teams (Dupage Diamondbacks and Orland Sparks) that you recently merged with. Both organizations are top notch! Our contributors, which include professional scouts, college recruiters and tournament directors provide professional reports from the field including real time updates. TBS-USA has also recently released the College Recruiting, Camp and Scholarship Locator. Few people can afford a consultant or recruiting service. We offer consulting on a variety of topics, that will ensure that your son/daughter finds the right college fit. The professional staff at TBS-USA: www.TravelBallSelect.com can help you do it yourself for a fraction of the cost.
Copy this link for a preview of a feature that we worked on at Baseball America Magazine: Team for the Ages, which again covered the national, not local scene.

Ibach,

I 'm not interested in your agenda or your casual talk ripping HS baseball and giving the travel guys a bad name.. Save all that National player talk for the people you are able to fool....You feel free to pm me with any scouts name in this area who is working with you. Thats a joke...

When your boys get to the National level at the important age, then talk to me, until then save it for someone who wants to listen. In fact I can't wait.
Duece, I couldn't help myself.

Fresh perspective, are you kidding me? FBD, come on, a wolf in sheeps clothing is still a ??? This looks like an end-around to promote the TBS agenda once again. Sorry Julie, CoachB25 and the other contributors but here it comes. This site doesn't need posters printing verbatim from other websites to "educate" us. If we want to read about 12 yr old All-Americans, we know where to go. If I want to read about Jupiter I can go on the WWBA website. I don't see anyone from PG posting their material on this site. IMO this is a blatant attempt to use this site as a free advertising pulpit for your own purpose.

Ibach, you're probably a great guy but we've been down this road before. Finally, to say "I don't have a dog in this fight" you must think we're fools. It's amazing how we've managed to have dialogue, agree to disagree and discuss Illinois HS baseball from the top of the state to the bottom without all that stuff that you're selling.

"TBS-USA events are Must Attend tournaments". Have you no Chutzpah?

Hey guys, I was just responding to a question about the intent and focusing on the new direction.
We have some new people on staff and really have a lot to offer, hopefully, you will soon see that.
Not here to rehash whatever happened in the past, just here to contribute and offer our perspective on threads that pertain to topics that we have an interest in. I didn't intend to come across like I was ripping anyone HS coaches or travel. Sorry if I did. Deuce can you tell us about your merger with the travel organizations Dupage Diamondbacks and Orland Sparks? That sounds like a great idea, bringing together three separate programs, however, some in the travel community wonder how you will keep everyone happy. What role do you have in the new merger, will you be coaching and how will you accommodate all of those players who have been promised spots next season? Will there be A & B teams?
Rosy, We feel the TBS-USA Tournament of Champions is a "Must Attend" event. If you want to participate and/or watch the top elite travel teams & players in the country.

Mr. Copp here is one of many should I send them to you for review or should I begin posting them on the site?
Correspondence between professional scout and Kevin Thomas
______________
Kevin-

I have spent 4 1/2 years associated with the Boston Red Sox...3 of which were as a paid PT scout. I graduated as one of the top graduates as Major League Baseball Scouting Bureau's Scout Development program in 2001. I have scouted some of the top amateur events in the US...Tournament of Stars (USA Jr. Natl Trials) in Joplin, MO and WWBA (Perfect Game) Championships in Jupiter, FL...plus the Premier Classic that is held in Peoria, AZ immediately after the WWBA tourney. I have been fortunate enough to scout/evaluate a ton of big league talent: BJ Upton (TB), Jeff Francouer (ATL), Prince Fielder (MIL), Denard Spann (MIN), James Loney (LAD), JJ Hardy (MIL), Sergio Santos (at that time a 1st rounder w/ AZ), Scott Kazmir (TB)...it goes on and on...within 1 years time period...I was fortunate enough to see 75+ of Baseball America's Top 100 amateur players.

I'm sure you guys get a ton of B.S. reports from biased partisans. I do not have a child of my own on any of my teams.

Let me know if I can be of any assistance in any way. I'm not interested in any P.R. at all. You guys are DEFINITELY on the right track.

If you'd like references:

Rob Childress- Texas A&M (Head Coach)
Llloyd Simmons- KC Royals (Rookie Ball Mgr...former Head Coach Seminole State College..most winning coach in JC history)
Wayne Britton- Director of Intl Natl Scouting NY Yankees...former Scouting Director w/Boston Red Sox
Jim Walton- Major League Scouting Bureau
Frank Marcos- Director of Major League Scouting Bureau

Again, thank you so much for what you are doing. You have only touched the "tip of the iceberg"...

Look forward to your input,

(We PM'd the name to you)

CPLZ, Just wanted to assure Mr. Copp that we don't consider our contributors "a joke".
We have individuals on our advisory board that include an orthopedic surgeon and a medical specialist in youth related sports injuries. We have run numerous articles on how to prevent arm injuries. We have certified strength/conditioning trainers on the board and individuals from a variety of fields & professions to bring us different views.
I don't care if your adviser is a bar keep and a janitor.

If I need an International player or if one of my guys needs a check up then I will get in touch.

Also if i am suppossed to be impressed with that list of references , I am not...

If you need a few more pro or college contacts feel free to pm, or stop in to one of our workouts in a few weeks. At least the pro guys will be there... You know so much , which pro team do I work for?

I have already seen your posts on my team giving both Sparks and D backs a promised spot on my club. Nothing is given to you. You see if your trying to take a shot at my program and the kids that are involved, I take it personally. Maybe its your agenda to publish such Garbage that is a joke on this and other sites.. If giving the D backs a little direction as to who to stay away from as far as tournaments and othere Garbage, so be it..call it what you want.
I have seen the good and the bad in this travel stuff. Something really smells...

Rosey, careful who you offend as I have seen your clubs at their events in Indiana and your coaches speaking highly of their events. Which they may be.

You see , I have a real good grip on who behind what around here.

Tell Tom D, thanks but no thanks, my teams focus are the area codes in this area and Perfect Game after that... That simple.

And as far as the tip of the iceburg, you might be on to something there..
Deuce, Not quite sure what your intent is. I'm sure you know lots of people and work for a professional team and have lots of contacts and are a very smart man. We never questioned your credentials. As for horse and the race and kids? Well I'm 26 and single.
We complimented your move with the Dbacks and Sparkes. I PM'd you the email from the coach that sent us the details and the statement
reflecting the guarantee of a spot. Not sure why you appear so angry? Going to hang on the sidelines for a bit here, Have a Great Holiday! Good luck to your team in 2007.
Ibach, how exactly do you make a living?
I went to your website noticed that you spoke very highly about the schaumburg seminole team. The same schaumburg seminole team that called one of my underclass players and dropped my name a number of times (according to my player in an effort to sway his $1000.00 decision) problem is that I have never been associated in anyway with the seminole program? I am not familiar with the coaching staff, their style of play, etc... Moreover, I am very particular about what I attach my name to, I would reccomend that advice to you. Lastly in surfing your site I have failed to notice any link that specifically states what and who TBS is all about. Reading your threads it is obvious you consider yourself an authority? Tell me how at 26 yrs of age have you become that authority? I would think experience would play a fairly decisive role in establishing an authoritative role in any respective market.

Lastly, I took this from your site:
College recruiters start their search with freshman in High School...That's right, Freshman! Several players from the TBS All American Teams have already been contacted by college recruiters. Start preparing now for how to deal with phone calls, campus visits, what camps to attend to best showcase your talents, what to ask, what not to ask...Stay tuned & stay informed at TBS!

Inform me, How have they been contacted? What was the level of the contact?

Ibach I know whats missing from this, so do you.

What is your mission sir?
