The TB coaches we have encountered have all been for other sports, even encourage it. But, what about the opposite? The HS coach that wants all of the player and not willing to let go during the summer or fall?
Most all of our HS coaches coach more than one sport a year. I am aware though that the silent rule is if you are an athlete you are either playing the sport of the season or training for your sport-year round.

JakeP---thank you that is what I was looking for, a TB coach should not interfere with HS tryouts for other sports, right? (iguess we were posting at the same time)
No I do not believe they should. I view HS as the best environment for learning athletics as the student is forced to deal with other elements other than just the sport. He/she has to deal with the social and educational requirements, something I view as critical for their development as an adult.
If a TB coach is dictating to the athlete what he/she should be doing during the off-season then it would be my guess they are in it for the wrong reasons.
Jake- So in return, would you agree that the high school coach should not dictate what the student-athlete is required to do outside of high school baseball? BTW- I'm adamantly opposed to players playing in a multitude of showcases. Pick and choose wisely.
A good travel team/organization will not start their schedule until after high school season is over. Also in the fall/winter kids should be able to play any sport they desire without repercussions from the coach. If the players baseball suffers due to the fact that he is not working on his game all winter, like others on the team, then he have to decide which is more important.
Thank you all for you thoughts, opinions and even suggestions.
Here is the update. We have found another team where the Coaches are VERY competitive about baseball yet are equally interested in developing well rounded athletes and citizens . Their schedule does not interfere with HS tryouts for other sports in the fall. The cost due to better sponsors is about half. Sounds like a good move for our son.
Son has been to new teams practices, researched team & spoke to his 'mentors'. He made the final call on this and seems so happy with his choice.

Absolutly - as long as that advice is "Keep in shape, play other sports, stay healthy, don't do drugs, and don't throw too much." Then I'm fine with the HS coach dictating.
BTW I think several well-selected showcases is all an athlete needs. But that's a whole different topic. I think most people who run showcases ought to be ashamed of themselves.
Glad I could be of help.
