My son never talked to him in person only on the phone on July 1st. Coach Bakich did not talk to my son again until July 12th. Coach Bakich waited for him at the conclusion of his consulation game on Sunday July 12th at Southern Poly Tech Institute. He talked with him for apporoximately 15 minutes.

They talked about my son making an unoffical visit to the university which we did. I have a copy of our visit agenda which was clearly marked unoffical. We had breakfast in the building across from the campus Marriott which I have the credit card receipt for. I paid for my sons breakfast and my own. We went to lunch at The Stamp on Campus, my son ate at Chick Filet which I paid for, I had a lemonade. The Maryland coach paid for his own lunch - he had chinese food if I recall correctly.

Any other questions?

Don't make suttle accusations, I was in the same hotel as Coach Bakich and we talked about his plans for Maryland. This is perfectly legal. This man did nothing wrong.

Good to see you drank the cool aid. Claim down! Of course you are going to see the best face of a coach that successfully recruited your boy. The real test of character is how does a person behave when he does not get his way --

....The real shame regarding the transition at Maryland is the loss of Jim Farr. Coach Farr always exhibited total class and was extremely respected by both his peers and his players....He will be missed and it is sad that despite his loyality and terrific intentions, he was not given the chance to be the head coach.

Since July 1st my son and I have been dealing with Coach Bakich. He went to every one of my sons games in East Cobb and I had the pleasure of having a two hour morning meeting with him. All I can say is this guy is a very impressive individual. My son and I visited Maryland this week so I may have some insight into your concerns.

There is to much information to write about from our conversations, meetings and visit. If you have questions about where Maryland baseball is going I will try and tell you what we heard but here is what impressed me the most.

The Athletic Department wanted to give the baseball coaches new offices but they refused, they said the trailer was fine for them lets spend the money on the players and the facilities to make Maryland baseball better. That's what a good leader does, they put their staff or in this case players, before themselves.

I have no doubt Coach Bakich can make my son a better baseball player but I am really looking forward to is him helping my son become a better person. Yes we talked alot about baseball but he also talked about what the Maryland experience will do to help him become a more productive person after his time at Maryland is done. What else can a parent ask for.

During our visit we were told the Maryland Athletic Department has been highly ranked compared its peers (for the past few years). That tells me they have excellent leadership and a great staff who are doing their homework before they hire coaches. I am sure Maryland performed extensive due diligence on Coach Bakich before he was hired.

For those of you bashing the coach you should reserve your commentary until you meet him - you may change your tune in a hurry.

Sounds like you spoke to Monty Hall --- I met him.
Trepfan obviously has a personal vendetta against Coach Bakich. He's been supporting Farr from the beginning. It's tough that he didn't get the job but Bakich was a hell of a hire by the University. Maybe he said some wrong things to your son, but the most important thing is how he treats his players. I know numerous kids on the team and all the reviews have been extremely positive. This guy is going to teach good lessons not just on the field, but in life. Him and Sean Kenny are a hell of a coaching duo, look out ACC.
umdterps01,

Trepfan is not ever going to say anything nice about MD, he is going to continue to say that Jim Farr should have been the HC at MD, and don't worry he will continue next year to bring up the fact that Danny H. wasn't voted All State by the MARYLAND High School Coaches.... Trepfan with your logic shouldn't Danny have to give us his DC Gatorade POY award since he didn't live in DC....Do us a favor go to the Viginia message board and drink the cool aide over there.

Off base but nice try -- I happen to be a University of Maryland Alum (for two degrees). Was introduced to Jim Farr when he was the coach at William and Mary --- so the history goes pretty far back --- through his tenure at U of M. And my introduction to Bakich is first hand......Try to stay on topic in the future.

We look forward to your annual 50+ posts when next year's MSABC All-State teams are posted.

Sure thing -- except the MSABC should consider changing its designated selections as the best means to recognize the Maryland Baseball Coaches versus the best players that "represent" the State of Maryland. Will be in touch ----

You buying or are you purposely being controversial, again.

Coach Farr & I chatted a couple of weeks ago and is
taking several weeks visiting his daughter before making any plans about his next gig. Is thinking something in the Fall with MiLB, or maybe a smaller conference who plays in the fall.

I chatted with the new Terp coaches. Very energetic group of baseball guys. Even though neither may have been Head Coaches, each was willing to get into both on an off field & all year. Simply put, only place to go is up!

I understand Larry Thompson's view point.
Coaches and scouts did not see him
at any other the 15 American Legion States.
I chatted with George after the come from behind walk off granny that put Mt Airy in winners bracket.

Not sure what the new Director of Baseball Operations will provide other than manage the Club Team's use of Shipley, or maybe interface Ground Facilities, or try to upgrade the presence of baseball camps in winter and summer. It's a new position that helps the Baseball Coaches and AD & Facilties.

There is a Top 30 Maryland/DC Skills and Drills session in a couple of weeks. Two 1/2 days for pitchers and catchers, & position players, then a day game on Day 3.

Sending prayers to Temple's LHP on freak pool accident while playing in Northwood Leagues.

cheers to all,
Bear

Not personal but factual -- first-hand -- eyes and ears --- have it in writing in an email from Coach B.

My goodness Steve.
Not sure what messages you are trying to say.

So, what are you saying?

Yes.

First off, congratulations to your son for
having the desire to compete in the ACC.
This is awesome.

Question:
What primary position do you think best fits your son in his Freshman year?
(My guess is 1b or RF)

cheers

My best guess is corner outfield. He has a very strong arm and runs pretty well for a bigger kid, pushin 6'3". Just timed at East Coast Pro at 7.1.

BC was recruiting him as 1st baseman, said ACC does a lot of hit and run, bunting and he wanted to have someone that athletic to cover ground (I am not familiar with ACC baseball other than knowing its a great conference). When I asked Coach Bakich where he thinks he will play he said corner outfield, 1st or DH.

My son has alot of work to do to get himself ready to compete in the ACC but I know he is up to it.

His name is Mike Montville, we are from Portsmouth, NH. If you seach google you can find more information on him. Or check out local papers www.seacoastonline.com or www.fosters.com.

Right now he is in LA with Yankees at Area Code games. He has been lucky to play in Tournament of Stars, East Coast Pro and now Area Code games this summer. The only negative I have on these events is lack of at bats. He got up 8 times in tournament of stars and 7 times at East Coast Pro. They have to get a ton of kids into these games so he understands.

He is very excited about going Maryland and being a Terp.

Couple of more questions:
If your son has verballed, why attend, at your own expense, the newer Area Code games?

Not sure why Coach Bakich would answer that way since he has yet to see his full team and that's not expected until three or four weeks after school starts. (Also, be aware of the JUCO kids he will bring in.)

All HS kids with plans to enter college and try and compete in the ACC are working their butts off on the field and in the classroom. The fact remains, on rare occassions do freshman position players start on the weekends.

Bottom Line: All ACC Weekends are wars. Not only do teams bunt and run, staff throw gas and frisbies, the bullpen hit spots, and lead offs and mashers get bombs outa here in a hurry.

Congrats again. See ya in Sept 2010

postscript: I watched Jeff Allison pitch well in his
Southern League AA debut this afternoon. Impressive. Not overpowering, yet got his first AA W.

Bear,

My son went to Area Code games for a couple of reasons. First he made the commitment to play and he wants to honor it. Second, he needs to play against top level competiion to see what he will be up against in college and hopefully it will make him a better player.

I would guess Coach Bakich gave him his first thoughts about what positions he can compete for playing time based on what he has seen of him and what he has on his roster. He told me his recruiting focus is on pitching and up the middle defense. He feels this is the best way to compete in the ACC.

My son doesn't play any middle positions so it doesn't leave much but the corners and he has never played third.

I don't think my kid has any illusions that he is going to come in as a freshman a play alot, it can happen but he knows he will be competing against alot of good players and he is ok with that.

Except for a handful of naysayers, I think there is a sense of something fresh and new happening in College Park. The first steps seem positive, let's hope it continues and turns into wins - ACC wins - for the Terps.

By connecting to the local Maryland high school/travel programs(which is happening I am told), the new staff will:
A) have a better shot at landing the top in-state talent; B)have a better chance at putting people in the stands at Shipley; and C)have more positive local press. These may/may not translate directly into conference wins....but it's a start.

Totally agree. Having participate in the past receruitment efforts first-hand, I can say that "communications" and presence were totally lacking. If Bakich generates the energy necessary to attract the State's finest - then
"they will come"......The tools of marketing will be most important versus conditions of facilities etc. which will become secondary in importance.
