Left7 ...

UCLA is not unlike many urban schools. There are just too many buildings on the campus proper to take up space for a baseball field and all that it entails with parking and clubhouses, etc. UC Riverside's stadium is off campus as well (tho not as far away as UCLA's.)

The field has been there for quite some time, and altho I am not part of that program, I think I can be pretty safe in saying that they aren't likely to replace it with a campus location unless real estate prices take a major nose dive in the near future.

Jackie Robinson Stadium has had some recent upgrades, new scoreboard and a few little details in recent years and is a great facility and there's no where on campus to build a field. Lack of space (or planning) many years ago is why they also don't play football on campus.

Besides, basketball is king in Westwood, now that they have in the heart of the campus.

While on the subject of UCLA, anyone heard anything more about who the new baseball coach will be. I think they have handled this situation as poorly as they possibly could.

Andy Lopez just signed a new contract with Arizona ... 5 year, I think ... so I doubt he will be in the running. John Savage ... well, that is another question mark. I believe he has a year or 2 left on his UCI contract, but then, anything could happen since the guy he signed with is now the AD at UCLA. I know, based on conversations with friends from UCI, that they are hopeful Coach Savage will NOT leave the 'Eaters ... but who knows. Only time will tell.

IMO the Bruins already have the best man already in the job. Gary Adams is a class act and a fine man. I believe his program has put more players in MLB than any other program in the country and there has never been a hint of impropriety associated with him. I've met many Bruin players over the years and they are always gentlemen and excellent players.

Personally, I don't buy this "retirement" nonsense.

I'd have my son play for Coach Adams any day (and I went to SC).
"Hat" as his old players know him is well respected throughout baseball as a standup man. His detractors point to the lack of national championships, but no one gets more players to the big leagues isn't that really what it's all about?

A very good friend of mine played for Gary on his first college team in 1971 at UC Irvine. He won a national championship with him too (Div II) I believe. To this day they still talk on a regular basis, how many college coaches can claim that?
