I always enjoyed the mix of bleached-blonde American and Saudi Arabian kids playing in Williamsport. It's not gonna happen this year. Saudi Arabia was knocked out by Uganda.

Little League officials say Kampala had its first youth team in 2005.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) — A youth baseball team from Uganda will be the first from the continent of Africa to compete in the Little League World Series.

The Rev. John Foundation Little League team from Kampala won the Middle East and Africa region on Saturday, beating Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, 6-4. The Saudi team had won the region for the last 11 years.

Kampala beat squads from Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and South Africa in the regional tourney. The five-team, four-day tournament was played at the Little League Baseball European Leadership Training Center in Kutno, Poland.

Kampala will play the Canadian champion on Aug. 19 in the first round in South Williamsport, Pa.

When my son and I saw his size on the roster we wanted to see him pitch. It turned out he wasn't a very good baseball player. He was a MPT all-star.

I met his mother and chatted at Williamsport. After the LLWS they were going to be leaving the boy at his grandmother's in Houston so he could develop into a basketball player. I believe he would have been a high school senior this year. The mother was taller than me. She was at least 6'2". The dad was 6'7".

Note: The kid who struck out all eighteen hitters in a LLWS game that year didn't pitch in high school. He was only an inch taller in high school. We did watch him pitch. From the front rooooooooow. I got a lap dance from Dugout. Save the comments. It's a woman under there.

That is awesome! Good for Uganda. There's a lot of worldwide untapped potential for baseball (Africa, China, India, etc) so hopefully they will show well in Williamsport. Unfortunately, I don't think the Saudi teams ever had much success once they got to the LLWS.
Saudi Arabia is in a weak region. It would drive my son nuts his LL all-star team was better. He said every team at states was better.
Congratulations to Uganda! We had a streak of attending the LLWS for five straight years and always had a great time.

At one of them, we saw the tall player from Saudi Arabia. The first time he went out to first base, we thought it was strange that the coach was throwing infield.

I think that was the last year under the old age rule. Imagine our surprise when he showed up again the next year because he was eligible again under the new cut-off date!

By the way, I noticed that the MVP for the PG WWBA 17U tournament this year was Kyle Carter. The same boy that was throwing 80+ as a Little Leaguer when his team won the LLWS.
