The is a very interesting article and also the opinions that follow it. Like to here some of the opinions on this board concering the subject of the article, especially since the kid in question has such strong local ties to the DFW area in select baseball;

Oi.

Would like to hear a coach's perspective on this. I have always advocated a cease-fire on benching and overhead weights for pitchers in season, but that is hardly a reason to skip your senior year of high school. I think there is more to this than the article is telling us.

This is a name I am not familiar with. Is this a kid with 4 year D1 potential?
The week before I had to report back to campus for teacher inservice, I drove down to Texas A&M University and met with one of the strength coaches there to discuss this very subject.

I came away with some great ideas and disspelled some myths that I had heard. I too am frustrated by "football workouts" because lifting for baseball is much, much different.

At Marcus this year and from now on, we will concentrate on our lower body and core strength. Will we lift with our upper body, sure. We will not do ANY over head lifting. We will not do ANY incline lifting. We will bench press, but only with dumbbell weights. We will alternate lifting heavy and lifting light during the offseason. In season, if you can't rep it 30 times, you are lifting too much.

Our offseason strength and conditioning program will be very baseball specific. Does it require more work of me...yep. But it is what my baseball guys need to make them better and to reduce injuries, which is what it is all about. We want to be quick, explosive, and flexible...with flexible being the key.

I could rant on even more, but the bell just rang and I have to get to my class.
I appreciate your opinion bulldog, but when the Orthopedic surgeon for a Major League Baseball Team and every strength coach in the Big 12 tell me the same thing, then I think we'll be OK. Not to mention my orthopedic surgeon that worked under Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Alabama who has recommended the same thing for me since I am still a "thrower." I understand what you are saying, but in season we are not trying to build strength, just maintain.

Personally, I'm a big believer in different varieties of push ups over lifting with the upper body.
