From the NDA side, I haven't seen any over the top hype, and very little "hype" of any sort. More like a defense against misinformation. As far as those games NDA played in Louisianna last February, Lockhart did indeed have them on the schedule in December as regular season games, but changed them to "scrimmages" well before leaving because he knew the team wasn't ready. NDA played like a team that hadn't practiced together for months against good to excellent competition that had been outside since January 1st. Did he slant the schedule change in his favor? Absolutely. But He did it before they played, not after. PVI has been hyped a bit, but they play in a conference with St. John's, who can do no wrong according to The Wahington Post and USA Today. If it wasn't for j2h6, most wouldn't know what a class program they have become and what a dominate team they are this year. Emerson has done a great job there. He's a baseball guy that really teaches the game. He doesn't recruit players, he attracts them. You could talk to him for hours, and those coach of the year awards would never come up. He and Lockhart don't wear T-shirts listing their awards, they're on the website where they belong. I do agree that guys that have built programs at Madison, Oakton, Westfield, Robinson, and a few others in NoVa often don't get the credit they deserve. You just can't chalk it up to luck that they have quality players that happen to live in their school district. The difference is coaching, leadership and organization. If you watch the head baseball coach at the public school in my area, you'd swear that he's wondering when the game would be over so he could get home and catch the last half of Survivor.
Most public school coaches don't want to play schools like NDA and PVI for 2 reasons. One is that they have little to gain and much to lose in their minds, especially the top programs. If they win...well, they should have. If they lose, they get more **** from parents and others than if they lost to their district rivals. Two, why risk exposing parents and players to the option of defecting to that private school program. The exception to this is the guy at North Stafford that believes that playing the best competition available make his team better. If it wasn't for residency requirements, would a legitimate prospect choose to play for a Falls Church or make the drive to Madison?
There is no boarding at Paul VI. I'd also like to congratulate St. John's College High School, Baseball America released their top 50 high schools in the country today and St. Johns was ranked #10. This is St. John's 2nd national ranking, earlier they were selected as Collegiate Baseballs #2 high school in the Country.
The March 1st official start date for the WCAC to begin is just one week away. The clear front runner based on the national polls is emerging to be St. Johns College HS in DC. PGCrosschecker just came out with their high school top 100 in the country. St. John's has now made their third national poll ranked #6 by PGCrosschecker, #10 by Baseball America and #2 by Collegiate Baseball News. Coach Mark Gibbs entering his 2nd year at the helm will a talented group of players to make a strong run at the WCAC Title.

Paul VI HS in Fairfax VA seems to be the clear #2 team in the WCAC and received their first national ranking at #19 by PGCrosschecker. Coach Emerson entering his 6th season at the helm potentially will have one of his strongest teams and deepest bench ever.

DeMatha HS in MD is always tough and by far has been the most successful baseball program in WCAC history. DeMatha this year returns their co-player of the year for the WCAC last year in Nick Rivers who'll lead a bunch of talented young men. The big change for DeMatha this season will be the fact that after the last 20+ years they'll have a new coach leading them. Coach Sean O'Connor takes the helm in his first year being head coach for DeMatha and has big expectations.

Good Counsel returns w/ a more experienced team this year and should improve over last year's peformance. Coach McGowan
and his staff work tirelessly w/ their off season conditioning and hope to make a big splash in the WCAC this year.

Bishop O'Connell returns with an older more experienced and talented group this year that's still young but I believe will be that much better this year. Coach Rick Hart who's been at the helm now for several years does a great job and look for them to surprise a few teams this year.

Gonzaga will struggle this year after losing their entire starting line up from last year. They have some young talented players coming up but I believe are still a year away from being back in the hunt. Coach Shourek has been the head coach for the Gonzaga Eagles for the last 11 years and appears this is his last as they've opened up the position looking for new coaches at all levels for baseball. We'll have to see who steps in and how they do.

St. Mary's Ryken surprised many teams last year w/ 2nd year head coach John Ford. They were competitive in many events and had chances to win several and in some cases did just that. I look for them to yet again surprise many teams this year and I would not fall asleep against this team as it might end up biting you back if you do

Bishop Ireton and and Bishop McNamara both enter this year with new coaches which I believe in both instances should have an immediate impact on both programs. They are both a couple years away from being in the hunt but if they continue to get more talented baseball players in to their programs they should improve a lot. Ireton's new coach this year is Coach Mike Gallagher and for McNamara is coach Larry Prange. Good luck to both of them in their first seasons.

Carroll for the 2nd year in a row has decided to not have a varsity baseball team and simply compete on the JV level in the WCAC.

I'll have more info as the season nears.
Congrats to both St. Johns and Paul VI HS. They were both recognized by Rivals in another national poll released today. The Rivals FAB 50 top high school programs in the country rankings were released today. Paul VI HS comes in at #13 in the country and St. Johns College HS comes in at #15 in the country.
The 2008 WCAC season official started yesterday. There were two teams from the WCAC yesterday who played. St. John's travelled down to Stafford HS in Virginia and played a competitive game against a Stafford team who also showed well in their scrimmage against Paul VI. St. John's survives w/ a 2-0 victory over Stafford.

Paul VI was the other WCAC team that played yesterday and they took on Flint Hill HS. Paul VI was victorious in their 6 inning game by a score of 12-2 and the game was halted due to the slaughter rule. It was a well balanced attack by every hitter in the line up but one and the pitching was very good for the first outing of the year.

Here is what to look for the remainder of this week regarding the WCAC teams:

Friday, March 14
Westfield @ Paul VI, 6:00

Saturday, March 15
Ireton @ St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes, 11:00
DeMatha @ Calvert Hall, 1:00
St. John’s @ Potomac, 2:00

Paul VI defeated Westfield HS tonight by a score of 5-3. It was a good game but you could tell that both teams are very early in their seasons. Next action for the WCAC teams are below:

Peter Verdin lead off the game w/ a solo HR and Tyler Costello took care of the rest. Costello was simply spectacular pitching a complete game, 4 hitter tonight w/ 12 k's, while his battery mate, Mike McMenamin threw out every baserunner who attempted to steal against him tonight, 3 for 3. Shantzee, he may very well already be there....every outing he has had this year he has simply dominated and if you include his preseason start in one scrimmage and his 2 starts in real games, Costello is 3-0 on the year and simply looks amazing. Costello is only a sophomore and as he continues to mature he'll only get that much better. Great kid, nice parents, big family he comes from.....I wish him all the best. I've listed below what our pitchers have done to date w/ our current 9-0 record:

Drew Shaw, 3-0, ERA 2.14
Mike Mitchell, 2-0, ERA 1.27
Tyler Costello, 2-0, ERA 1.62
Greg Weigand, 1-0, ERA 0.00 w/ 2 saves
Peter Verdin, 1-0, ERA 2.33

Interesting, I know everyone has their unique personality and I'm sure some are different off the field than they are on the field but in my two high school seasons of watching Tyler Costello pitch I've never seen him lose his cool like you describe. I guess that means Coach E has it under control.

Just to update, PVI beat Dematha on Monday by a score of 16-5 then beat BI on Tuesday by a score of 12-1 (6 innings). Costello pitched the BI game and shut them down. But for several uncharacteristic errors, Costello would have had a shutout.

PVI hit four HRs against Dematha--Verdin, Murakami, Bowers, and, I believe, Bromley.

PVI plays Good Counsel at home on Thursday and St. John's at St. John's on Saturday (if the weather holds up).

One quick note--if anyone is looking for a young player on the rise, look at Lansing Veeder, freshman outfielder who has broken into the starting lineup of a senior-dominated PVI team. He is among team leaders in hitting and fielding categories.
Needless to say, this is a huge upset. It makes the St. John's v. PVI game on Saturday a must-win for St. John's if they are to contend for the regular season WCAC title. Dematha must have played awfully well to beat St. John's.

Assuming Silverstein is healthy, is there any way that he might pitch v. PVI this Saturday? Would he not need some innings prior to the PVI game to be fully game ready?
showdown in the WCAC:

The first of potentially 3 meetings on the year between Paul VI (15-0/6-0) and St. John's (11-3/5-1)has arrived. The two top Nationally ranked teams in the Washington Metro area will square up tomorrow afternoon at St. John's College HS in Washington DC. Every game for the last 3 years has been a close contest w/ exception to the WCAC Championship game last year when Paul VI 1 hit SJC and went on to win 5-0 and take the WCAC title. It appears that tomorrow's game is going to be a rematch of sorts w/ Scott Silverstein (Virginia) expected to be on the bump for St. John's and Mike Mitchell on the mound for Paul VI. If you have nothing to do on Saturday and you want to watch an amazing high school game between two very talented teams, I've listed directions below to St. John's field. It's going to be a full house tomorrow and the scouts have already arrived in full force for this one in anticipation of what should be one heck of a day of baseball in the nation's capital, weather permitting. Please check www.pvibaseball.com for updates on the game Status and there will be live in game coverage on www.dcsportsfan.com (see message boards).

j2h2 has it correct--but note that Silverstein has yet to pitch this year and rumor is that UVA has asked that he not pitch this year. . . As interesting as whether Silverstein will pitch is who will PVI pitch from its stable of #1s?

As for a full house, keep in mind that at St. John's CHS there is a massive natural ampitheater from which a game--it would seat several thousand. So there will be room for everyone, so don't hesitate because you think it might be too crowded.
The hugely anticipated first meeting of the year between Paul VI and St. John's took place today and it did not disappoint. Paul VI defeated St. John's today by a score of 5-4 and what a game it was. I'll have a full report later about today and the season thus far for the Panthers. The Panthers are now 7-0 in the WCAC and 16-0 over all.
The fifth week now in the books, WCAC conference play is in full swing and for the most part everyone has seen each other atleast once. Officially now at the halfway point, check out the latest results below:

WCAC Baseball
SCHOOL OVERALL PF PA
Paul VI 16-0 161 39 - 7-0 in coference
St. John's 11-4 114 37 - 5-2 in conference

The latest standings in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference are below. The sixth week behind us there have been many surprises this year starting w/ the bottom tear teams improving, becoming more competitive than in year's past. The new coaching staff's have done a wonderful job and in doing so have made every game in the WCAC interesting to say the least, all the way to the very end, if not to the final out of each game. The preseason favorite, St. John's, has had some disappointments this year starting w/ several close loses to quality opponents but the biggest disappointment has to be losing Scott Silverstein perhaps for the entire season on the mound. Silverstein has certainly done his part offensively for St. John's but in the end his presence or lack of it on the mound has made the biggest difference so far this year for the preseason #1.

Paul VI has become familiar w/ taking second fiddle to SJC and this year especially in the preseason and early on would be nothing different. However, Paul VI had bigger plans for this year and were determined not get off track. The one thing that Paul VI knew for sure going in to the 2008 season was they would have the pitching but would they be able to respond in needing to replace their SS and LF'r defensively and how would they respond offesively. They responded in deed starting this year 19-0 on the season while also garnering national recognition while dominating all sides of the game.

Paul VI has defeated two defending STATE Champions, three nationally ranked opponents, their line up 1 thru 9 have simply been amazing offensively, they currently have 23 home runs on the year at the half way point, ahead of last year's pace and as a team are hitting .400 with an on base average of over .525. There are two weeks remaining in the regular season in the WCAC and then the PLAY-OFFS !

WCAC Baseball
SCHOOL OVERALL PF PA
Paul VI 19-0 / 10-0 in coference
St. John's 14-5 / 8-2 in conference
DeMatha 7-9 / 5-4 in conference
Good Counsel 9-9 / 5-5 in conference
O'Connell 10-8 / 5-6 in conference
Ireton 8-9 / 4-6 in conference
Gonzaga 6-11 / 3-6 in conference
St. Mary's Ryken 7-12 / 2-7 in conference
McNamara 4-10 / 1-7 in conference
A special congratulations goes out to Head Coach Billy Emerson. The victory over Ryken yesterday was Coach Emerson's 130th win in his short six year career at Paul VI. This historic milestone now places Coach Emerson at the top w/ the most wins of any baseball coach in the history of the Paul VI High School baseball program. Coach Emerson is now 130-41 over-all since 2003 surpassing Coach Mickey Leap who over his nine year coaching career at Paul VI compiled a win/loss record of 129-119 including winning the 1993 Conference Championship and the 1994 Virginia State Championship (Pvi's first state title). Since 2003 under Coach Emerson's leadership, Paul VI won the 2004 Virginia State Championship, 2005 Division Championship, 2007 Division Championship and the 2007 Conference Championship titles.
The final week of the regular season for the WCAC is this coming week. The majority of teams will have three games remaining in their regular season schedules and prepare for the play offs the following week. There's still plenty of opportunities for teams to make some moves over this last week for better positioning for the play offs. The current standings are below it should be an exciting final week to the regular season for the WCAC.

WCAC Baseball
SCHOOL - OVERALL / CONFERENCE
Paul VI 21-1 / 12-1 in coference
St. John's 16-6 / 10-3 in conference

Good Counsel 10-11 / 6-7 in conference
O'Connell 10-9 / 5-7 in conference
