Last Sunday, my boy was playing in the championship game of a local tournament. Our batter hit a high chopper to the ss who sort of bobbled the ball which made the play close. The ss throw was high and to the home side of first. The 1b caught the ball at head level and was in the base path with his glove in the runners face. The runner put his hands up and ran into the 1b, knocking him down and breaking his nose. Not what you want to see but it happened. Our base coach immediately helped the injured boy while the 3b coach kept the runners at 1st and 2nd running. Both scored.

The umpire put the runners back on 2nd and 3rd and ejected the runner in the collision and added an out.

Was that the correct call?

The mother of the boy was very upset, screaming and yelling at our kids, coaches, parents and the umpires. She then called the cops who came and questioned coaches from both teams, kids from the other team, and the umpires.

What do you tell the cops?

Tell the cops the truth - the kid got hurt playing baseball.
She called the cops????? Are you serious????? Has she never been to any athletic sporting event EVER???? Did your runner shank him or steal his wallet????

Was this a bang bang play or did the batter just decide to be a jerk and run over the 1B?

Did the cops keep a straight face when interviewing "witnesses" after they figured out what was really going on?

I saw it as a bang bang play. Plus the runner is the most well behaved kid on the team. This happened in the first inning and things were pretty tense for a while. When the cops showed up, some on the other team seemed embarrassed and the opposing coach became apologetic.

The cop was very professional and very serious.

I'm told there are assault charges pending.

ridiculous...........train wreck nothing more......
Geez - I hope there is video of this to show it was just a part of the game. No ill intentions were meant and this woman gets a reality check. The one I feel sorry for the most is her kid. He's got to go through life with her as a mom - he's either going to be embarassed by her or he's going to turn out like her. Either one is not good for him.

I don't understand why the runner was tossed, to me he was protecting his face OR did he try to knock the ball loose?
Officer,
Here's what I saw..

Simple case of self defense. Kid#1 was trying to hit Kid#2 with a big, heavy glove with a hard ball inside it so Kid#2 simply tried to block the glove from causing him bodily and emotional harm. Kid#1 started the whole thing; Kid#2 was only trying to run away to the base where he would be safe. Kid#1 was definitely the aggressor.

What did the umpire say...h*ll Officer, he's blind anyway and was out of position and hadn't made the right call all day and,etc,etc...
Don't get why the 1B is trying to touch the runner on a force play. Bad idea. If the runner had time to put his hands up, seems that the 1b had time to tap the bag and move.

Can't imagine calling the cops on that one. Whatever happened to plunking the runner with a nice, soft curve ball the next time he comes up to bat, then calling it even?

Kidding, well sort of...

Well, there could be lots of reasons, but the simple and obvious explanation is that the umpire saw this play differently than 80PATRIOT did.

The umpire's decisions are consistent with a determination that the runner interfered with F3 (out and other runners return), and that he did so in an unsportsmanlike or malicious manner (ejection).

I'm sure that is what the umpire was thinking but I am not so sure he even saw the play until the kid was on the ground. The plate umpire made the call on the ejection without consulting the field upmire who made the F3 call at 1b.
