NC Dad, I agree. I can only speak for myself and my observations. I doubt many coaches in my area will last if they aren't getting after it. I know I've been told that "we have high expectations. You will meet those high expectations." Now what does that mean? Personally, I'm glad that our baseball program is viewed in that light. Good kids get cut. THAT'S A FACT. I was cut my freshman and sophomore years. It didn't have anything to do with talent. I had to work on myself. I did and led my team in hitting my Junior and Senior years. The cutting process isn't perfect. Noone is perfect. My advice to kids that I cut goes something like this - You can be mad at me for cutting you and put all of the blame on me. Or, you can be mad at me for a moment and then get after it improving yourself to prove that I was wrong next year.

Some things that might hurt your chances:

  • Not doing what you were told the way you were told. (This week we actually had a middle school kid tell one of the Head High School Basketball Coach that the Head Coach "didn't know what he was doing."
  • Poor Grades. If it comes down to two equal players, the one with better grades will be kept.
  • Discipline Referrals - If you are in the office for discipline, you name is being referred to the head coach. Count on that!
  • Being late, not prepared, lacking equipment.
  • Finally, disrearding any set of rules etc. that the coaches will define before tryouts.

One last thing, being NERVOUS! NERVOUS is for people that don't practice. If you are prepared, go out and show your stuff. The coach will notice.
snowball, you are correct that the player should accept admission somewhere if he has not signed - - - if baseball is a consideration, somewhere with a walk-on shot

a friend accepted an offer at a summer end tourny a week before he was to start school in Pa - before he got home from the tourny, he had been accepted, enrolled, and had housing at the NY school, and also had withdrawn from his Pa school.

and if it don't happen, you still have your primary college plan in place

in NE Ohio HIGH EXPECTATIONS for baseball are -

I (the AD) expect NO conflicts with the football program

I (the AD) expect to seldom hear from any irate baseball parents

I (the AD) expect you to raise funds to cover your essentials

WE (the school) expect good sportmanship

- - if you live up to those you can keep the job as long as you want it
