My son is a 2014 RHP. He's the ace on his HS team. Plays for a elite showcase team. They play at all the big time tournaments in the area, and East Cobb. He throws around 83-85. Good off-speed pitches. He has always been very effective no matter what the competition was. I know he doesn't throw very hard but he's 6'6" 180lbs. and has alot of room to fill out. His coaches have said that with what he has now and his projectability that he would generate some interest.

But my question is that it is the summer of his junior year, with people with similar "stuff" on his showcase team  receiving some interest. Should I be worried about him not getting a chance to play college baseball somewhere?

Playing college baseball has been his goal for his whole life.

I can honestly say he has worked harder then just about all of his peers. And that comes from his coaches.

I just hope that his hard work will payoff in the end.

Thanks.

2014RHP,

It is true.  Your son may get some extra looks because of that projectability, but your son is probably still going to have to work his tail off to find the right program.

There are nearly 900  D1/D2/D3 colleges in the US with baseball programs.   I'd request a face to face with his travel coaches to see whom is in their network of possible interested programs.  Next, I'd create a list of schools your son is interested in, and cross reference that with the travel coaches list.   I would not just rely on the travel coaches finding a fit for you.  You have to take ownership of the process.   Essentially, you are dividing and conquering how your son can  get in front of all those coaches through showcases and camps.  This may double your son's exposure and target the schools he is most interested in.

This comes from personal experience.  My son's national travel coach knows many people, and opened many doors for my son.   However, it is a big baseball world out there, and you can't know everybody.  So, I would take ownership of his recruiting efforts and leverage all resources to get to his college baseball end goal.

Good luck!

Follow fenway's advice and start making the list and set up an email account for your son and have him start to contact coaches with a profile sheet, summer team he is on and where he will be playing. It takes some time to work up this list as he should be looking at his desired major, school costs, distance from home, etc etc. This will at least get him on their recruiting  list.

Based on his velo I would target JC's, DII and DIII's. Most D1's will not recruit a RHP regardless of projectability unless he is in the upper 80's. His profile however is perfect for a JC to D1 particularly if he gets in the gym and gets stronger during his JC time. He is exactly the type of kids who go this route.

He is also the perfect target for a DIII program who can work with him until he develops, or take a risk on putting him on the bump and see if he can get outs regardless of velo.

Best of luck.

Thanks everyone for y'alls opinion. We were thinking JC, for one because D3 schools around here are very expensive and I have heard alot of people say the JC route is a great option.

What would you think he would need to hit to get a chance at a D1 school?

His goal has always been to play D1 out of high school or after two years of JC.
