So many applauded the NCAA awarding a covid year, then a 1 time transfer.
What you see now is the result.
Why should coaches be fired for what they were allowed to do?

Exactly.
If you are upset with the current situation, find fault with the NCAA. The coaches have their jobs on the line, every single day. They are going to do what they have to do, within the rules, to win and get players their degrees.
For those with players in portal, many programs are now having JUCO/ portal camps. I dont know where you will find the info posted, but wanted you all to know happening.
Updated transfer tracker up to 1726. Would imagine 1800 not far off now. Plus you throw in D2 and D3 and I am guessing there are over 3000 kids looking for new homes... From what I could tell from my old lists from last October 2020, there were about 1260 kids listed for the 2019-20 tracker plus another 100 names or so that they started the 2020-2021 (current) list with. There is probably some overlap in the lists, but this is something to be aware of...
Portal is full of players from D1mid-majors. IMO most will need to move to D2, D3 or NAIA if they want to keep playing. As discussed on here many times this will push talent down (and out) at all levels of baseball. If you are an uncommitted ‘21, ‘22 or ‘23 you might want to change your strategy. JuCos in Texas are already recruiting ‘22s. Some D1s & D2s aren’t recruiting HS players at all - only JuCo. Historical timelines for recruiting are no longer relevant. Adjust your plan.
Also worth noting that 400+ of those guys are listed as Graduate students. Many of them probably graduated in 4 years from their D1 school and are now hoping to use their covid year to play one more season. There are a bunch of Ivy guys on there who may end up at HA D3 schools.
I find it interesting that there are that many graduate students wanting to still play. I’d think more of them would want to get out in the workforce and start making a living, as opposed to taking on more student loan debt.
A few things you see. A lot of players from schools who had recent coaching changes. A lot of players from schools who have coaches on the hot seat. Missouri has 18 kids listed. I see Deggs is still churning and burning kids. 11 in the portal plus he cut his entire Freshman class at semester when he was hired. But, he cried on TV once and writes motivational books so the media loves him.
is July 1st the deadline for the free waiver? after that date, does it go back to the traditional transfer process? how late can schools realistically recruit players in the portal and have them on campus in the fall? Can it be done that quickly or is spring semester more likely? Can we expect the landing spot for a lot of these players to be listed soon? after the draft? after July 1st?
Someone posted this earlier in one of the threads, but I'm seeing a lot of JUCO/Portal camps.
@adbono posted:I can’t verify this but if it’s on Twitter it has to be true, right?!?
Can we confirm it with Barstool?
That sounds about right considering that there are at least 1700 D1 kids listed on D1baseball and the last list I posted on here. Not a stretch to think that there are 1300 between D2 and D3 in the portal...
So what are the options? Take a year off from school and organized ball? Do they all drop down to JUCO swelling rosters to 100+? Take the fall to train and send videos hoping a coach will add them after fall cuts?
Also, how does this thing get updated? I noticed Boise State had 3 players on the list, which I thought was a bit odd since they dropped their program in 2020. So out of curiosity (and because I'm waiting in a parking lot picking up a kid from practice) I googled a player. He's playing minor league ball in Boise, wouldn't he be ineligible after that?
The more this plays out, the more happy I am that my 2021 found a great fit academically and socially at a fantastic HA D3 that also seems to really like him as a Baseball player. With early decision. We (he) are incredibly lucky.
A lot of his buddies, travel teammates etc from the 2021 class got recruited to, and committed to, non-HA D3’s and JUCO’s that over recruited and now in addition to that are looking at bringing in D1 drop downs and JUCO transfers. This is especially true at the D3’s that are perennial National Title contenders.
It all sounds very ugly and the kids haven’t even started their fall semester yet.
The list was started last summer I think maybe in August and had some carry over from the 2019-2020 list. I wouldn't count on it being 100% correct because of things like that but gives some insight into how many kids are looking for new homes. D1baseball publishes an updated version periodically which is where this data came from. I think they update it when they can. I am sure the actual portal is a living database and is updated anytime someone is entered into the portal or an update is added.

You are looking at the D1 baseball website view of portal. Not the NCAA portal.
Many players went into portal because their program cancelled 20-21 season. Example Bethune Cookman.
I know of a few players that have found a new home but not listed as such.
Graduates probably have the better option, IMO. They can get some grad credits paid for and return the following year as a grad assistant to finish.
In reality, for many, it's probably time to move on.
98% + of NCAA athletes go pro in something other than sports. And to expedite that process, I present you with the Transfer Portal.

My 2021 did the same thing. He went with a HA D3 early decision with a coach that really wanted him. He turned down a couple of mid D1s to go the the far better school. Using baseball to help him get admitted to a great college was a good call, I think. The music has stopped and, unfortunatley, their aren't enough chairs for everyone. Curious to see how things shake out further in the fall.
Does anyone have an updated list?
@d-mac posted:Does anyone have an updated list?
here is the new list
I know a 2020 who was red-shirted and not put on his SEC schools roster. He does not show up on the portal since he wasn't on the roster. Kids like that push the real world count higher than the portal shows.

There are an unprecedented number of players in the portal.....There are also a large amount of players listed (atl east according to d1baseball.com) that are no longer in the portal.
Dumb question here. If a player enters the portal, could they still remain at their school and play? Or have they basically said, I am moving on to the coaches and the school?

Once a player enters the portal they are almost always dismissed from the team at their current school. Unless you are an absolute stud (or you have no choice) you are a fool to enter the portal without already having a new home lined up first.

"you are a fool to enter the portal without already having a new home lined up first"
pretty "foolish" statement...
I would say that 99.5% do not have a new home lined up -yet and do not have much of a choice but to enter the portal due to current environment. Just because you wouldn't do it doesn't mean others, who you have no idea about what is going on with them /their schools and coaches..shouldn't enter the portal.
What we are finding out is exactly as we expected...unless you are the rare stud - most of your leads will not come from the portal but by reaching out ,continually, to all past and current relationships.
We got a call from a coach . He gets 100-200 emails per day. You need to stay on top of that..
that is all..
Adbono;
do you realize that a College Coach [D-1 or 2 or 3 or Naia that needs a LHP, SS, OF or catcher can utilize the D-1 Portal for the special player who will help his team immediately.
The College Coach has 35+ players, many who have played with or against the Portal player.
This would be a detailed "scouting" report that would provide info on the Portal's player's tools, "make up" and his ability to help the team compete.

I will be sharing something in the next couple of days that might better reflect how many players transferred.
Note, non-rostered players can fall into the sunken place.
Normally if a non-rostered player finds a new school, we will identify them as transferring in.
This is only a partial answer.

I clearly said “unless you have no other option “
Bob, the number of players in the portal is overwhelming. I can’t back what I’m about to say up with hard data, but based on the many conversations I’ve had with D1 & JuCo coaches I’m confident that I’m in the ballpark. The approx 2000 D1 players in the portal break down something like this: 5% studs who can go anywhere they want, 25% grad transfers some of which are attractive to someone, 10% odd situations but good players. All of that 40% have a decent to good chance of something working out well. The other 60% is made up of kids that got cut, are unhappy about playing time, etc. and are looking for greener pastures. The problem is that those greener pastures likely don’t exist for those guys unless they go D2, D3, NAIA or JuCo - and many of them can’t get off the D1 Kool-Aid they were raised on. D1 coaches have told me to my face that they only have interest in the portal to fill a hole in their roster and they would prefer JuCo guys for that anyway. I know that a lot of players are forced into the portal with little to no choice. But a lot are also going in voluntarily with false hope IMO.

Not sure how you would have a "new home lined up." Other NCAA schools can't be communicating with you prior to you entering the portal.

I see a couple kids on the list who have already played a season at their new school. It would be more accurate if D1Baseball included the approximate date the player was added.

How do you line up a new home without first going into the portal and notifying current coach?
You talk to the coach where you want to go through someone else. Not that hard. Or you talk to him yourself. As they say only illegal if you get caught. Everyone knows someone

I don't think there are nearly as many NCAA coaches as willing to do this as you think.
@roothog66 "I don't think there are nearly as many NCAA coaches as willing to do this as you think."
While I have no first hand experience with this to argue otherwise, I'd suspect that a LOT of coaches absolutely LOVE people saying things like this. How's the saying go? The devil’s best trick is to persuade you that he does not exist?

Sure there are. It just takes the right person to approach them with it. And a RC is usually more accessible than a HC but not always.
