Do the very best you can at the positions you have been playing already.

A lot of coaches go by body type.

If you can hit HR's tryout for whatever position you want.

If you are tall and lanky with good speed and have a good arm, try out for the OF. If you are slower than maybe 1B or pitcher.

If you are smaller and fast tryout for the infield.

If you are bigger then most kids your age but slower of foot try out for 1B or 3B or catcher, if you can hit for average.
A+J=B & AJ:

I suggest that you try out for the position at which you think you will perform the best. Most coaches will pick the best ball players and then they will decide what position you play.

Be prepared, be confident, and do your best. Positional play will only be a part of the try out. Every kid will throw, hit, and run. The top players will likely be identified before positional play is started. If you can throw the ball, catch the ball, and swing the bat, you'll make the team.

Good luck to you both,

Try out at the posistion or posistions that you are best at. Dont worry about your size at any particular posistion it doesnt matter unless its first base as far as height. If you are a good catcher let the coach know that you can catch. You never have enough pitching or catching at the HS level. The most important thing is that you hustle and have a great attitude. If you can play the coach will see it. He is going to put you where you help the team the most in the end so dont worry about posistions so much. Kids that are versatile have an advantage over the ones that are not. The more posistions you can play the better for you and the team. If you can play 2b and ss you can play 3b. And if you can play the of great. And if you can also catch I dont see you having too much to worry about. Good Luck
Don't worry too much about what position you are trying out for - the coaches will shift you around and see what you can do at different spots. Players often find themselves at new spots when they move up to the high school level.

If you scroll down in this forum, you will see one called "What you can and can't control! HighSchool Ball." It has some really good advice for anyone getting ready to try out for their first high school team.

Good luck!!!
Another vote here for "try out at the position you are best at, and the coach will put you where he needs you". My son's primary position in HS was pitcher, but he literally played at least one game at every position except catcher, at the HS varsity level.

One other piece of advice to arod+jeter, re: your comment "but i always get nervous playing it afraid im going to mess up". In tryouts the coach is looking not just at the plays you make, but your athleticism and other signs of your natural ability. As a freshman he is going to figure you will need some instruction and seasoning. Don't be nervous that you will make a mistake, and don't worry if you do make one - shake it off and get ready for the next one. Work hard, think positive, and have fun!
