The "Ephis" pitch is an "old school" technique used by classic pitchers. It involves keeping the same arm motion, but throwing the ball in a arc-like curve at a very slow speed. here is the link i got it from its just a profile on some pitcher but it explained it good.

basically all the pitch is is a very slow pitch with a lot of arc on it that a few older pitchers used to throw

An ephis could be thrown 30 feet or more high. Then the ball, of course, drops almost straight down like a slow pitch softball. Baseball players aren't used to hitting something like that. The speed is so slow it can't be hit for distance anyway.

I can't see why the arm motion must be the same. Batter has all the time in the world to adjust.

It was said that it was ALMOST impossible to hit one for a homerun. I think no MLB pitcher has thrown the ephis since the late 30s

I believe it was the 1946 All Star game when Ted Williams hit a home run off Rip Sewell and the "eephus" pitch that Rip made famous.

I was fortunate to play a round of golf with Rip in Lakeland,Fl in the mid eighties. I had gone to Lone Palm CC. to visit an old friend who was the golf pro there and he told me there was an old former player named Rip Sewell who was looking for someone to play golf with that day and would I like to play with him? I said sure!

He told me to take it easy on him because both of his legs had been amputated below the knees-he had artificial legs. Rip shot 81 and beat me by 3 shots that day!!

He told me the whole story behind the eephus pitch and the time he threw it to Ted Williams in the All Star game. He claims he told Ted he was going to throw it to him three times and Ted kept shaking his head no,no,no. On the third pitch he hit it out and Rip told me he ran around the bases scolding Ted for hitting it out! I have since seen some footage of the game and it does show some banter going back and forth between the two. We sat around afterwards and Rip talked and I listened, feeling very fortunate to have just been able to be around such an amazing man.
