I am interested in thoughts on private MIAA schools participating in the state tournament? If this seems unreasonable - why not at least have the public state champ and MIAA champion play a 3 game series at the end of the year? I cant imagine that anyone would oppose this.

While I think the MIAA is the best conference in the state top to bottom, the top 3 public schools are about equal to the top 3 MIAA teams. What say you?

This would be a great idea, unfortunately state rules would have to change. Public schools are locked into a 20 game schedule, including 2 games for a tournament. Many counties have the majority of their schedule already mapped out which leaves little room to schedule additional games.

An end of the season tournament runs into problems with graduation. While I would love to see this happen, I am just not sure if the logistics would allow it.
I am not sure if the all the MIAA teams would want to participate. This would finally show everyone that there is not that big of a gap between the Publics and Privates. A number of the top Public Schools(TJ, Severna Park, CM Wright, Fallston and South Carroll) had wins over MIAA schools last year. I think there were others as well.

2009 mock match ups would look like this ;

2009 4A (Severna Park)v. A (Calvert Hall)
2009 3A (Frederick) v. B(Friends)
2009 2A (River Hill)v. B(Baltimore Luthern)
2009 1A (Bohemia Manor) C(Towson Catholic)

The edge goes to the Public School State Champion in each match-up. SP and CH would be close. The difference would be the the future MD Terps on SP.

I agree in general but I would have to say that the CHC SP would favor CHC by a lot. Loyola blew SP out last year but lost to CHC 2 twice. With Trianfo and Geiger pitching, along with CHC offense, SP would not fare well.

Last season...SP wins 7 out of 10 games against CHC. In most seasons, turn that record around.

really doesn't matter but disagree here - saw them both play 3 times each in 2009. 8 out of 10 to CHC in 2009...again, SP got beat bad by the #3 team in the MIAA and faced their 3rd pitcher.

While I would certainly like to see an end of the year tournament of public v. MIAA schools or more games played between the two, it is just not a fair comparison. Private schools can recruit, while public schools must take who ever is in their district. Private schools can get unlimited donations from boosters or private donors, while public schools are capped and have restrictions of the amount of money they can accept. Title IX comes into play for public schools and not for all male private schools.

Advantage private schools on a consistent basis. Of course there are exceptions...

There has been a Maryland Private State Baseball Tournament in May every year since I can remember. In 2009, Good Counsel HS lost to Riverdale Baptist in the finals held at RB. I remember Loyola in the finals a few years ago. St Johns vs RB in the mid 2000's was a good game. The finals for the Maryland Private State Baseball Tournament has been held at several locations including Shipley, PG County Stadium, Joe Cannon, Cabin John Regional, and maybe a year at Navy.

For 2010, the planned dates for the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athetics State Baseball Tournament include:
May 14 Regionals
May 17 Quarterfinals
May 19 Region Semifinals
May 21 Region Finals
May 25 State Seminfinals
May 28/29 State Finals

For 2010, this Maryland Private School Tournament is planned for 5/20 to 5/22.

May scheduling issues appear to be a primary concern for many and planning a June event has many conflicts. On the flip calender side, a planned fall event may be feasble yet has not been initiated from what I remember.

Good Luck
