hear lockport is making kids only play for their hs team in the summer.say it aint so joe!1--it can get stale playing with hs guys only 2---takes away from kids the ability to learn from as many coaches they can 3--surround yourself with great players and that will elevate your own play 4--your hs team probably will not be asked to play at a national and if you can probably will be eliminated quickly 5--if i am a sr. pitcher i really do not want to be mowing down pale face soon to be jr's;or if i am a sr. hitter the opposite applies.a kid should alwys play up to his potential and not down to the competition.these are just some of the problems of forcing a kid to play hs only 6--i can see the lawsuits coming,ex. what if a blue chipper says he is going to do what he thinks is the best interests of his development and plays travel and say a hs coach takes takes vindictive action against him,for ex. soory kid you did not make the team or sits him or just messes with him and the loss of scholarship occurs then expect the school or coaches responsible to be sued.i am sure their are people in the field that would be supeona to testify about a kid abilities or maybe they would voluntar 7--loss of exposure, loss of exposure, loss of exposure! should i go on with other pitfuls of doing this. also i have heard and not sure it is true that ihsa is going to extend the summer season into aug. to put the squeeze on travel teams, also we are being blamed for sore arms.right when you think il. baseball has evovled to compete national from having the ability to train year round and thje benefits of playing travel ball that plays by far the best competition ,this could set il. baseball back 20 years.please i would like to hear responses.

Play, I agree with you totally. Some of the high school coaches have threatened ball players with not making the spring team, if they play travel. Downers Grove North for example. Coach Issackson has done that. The parents dont know what to do, nor the players. Its selfish on thier part. Our coach at Downers Grove South, trys to conform as best he can. Lets pitchers pitch on Monday if the have a weekend tourny. Gives kids time off with no reprecussions..

Ive heard Carl Sandburg tried to do it this year playing baseball in " travel tourneys " and failed. The competition is too great.
Play,

We have been dealing with those same scenarios in Wisconsin for over 30 years.

We have the old school coaches that LOVE Legion baseball and they don't realize that it's just an extension of HS baseball and for the elite player it hurts the kid!!! They force these kids to play for their community Legion team and make them feel guilty or punish them if they go and play elsewhere.

It really is all about ego for most of these guys and you'll get the same tired lines when you try and reason with them..."if a player is talented the scouts will find him" or "there's no difference in competition between travel and Legion ball"

I doubt many of them have ever seen travel ball player on a national level! It really is sad...
what exactly is the policy at lockport and downers north. i am really surprised. here are 2 fine programs that will falter if the policy is as severe as depicted in previous posts. can we get verification. AND.... how many others are out there?? lets hear it . keep in mind that there are summer coaches out there that share the blame. non communicators and some that go back on promises especially regarding pitching. its high time the 2 sides got together or does the ihsa have a problem w/that, wouldn't doubt it.
Hit,

I agree with you completely...problem is you're trying to break 50+ years of tradition in my state. These summer "coaches" put the weight of the whole community "you'll let down the whole town if you don't play summer ball here....etc"

It really is emotional warfare to do that to a 16,17,18 year old kid.

Also many of the "rural" kids don't know what's out there and their coaches won't allow them to be contacted by people (like myself) who run travel teams. They also won't let them attend tryouts or showcase type events until their season is over.

It really is a shame!
The 18u teams that are avilable now in a 250 mile radius include the Wisconsin Blazers, (seeded # 1 in the final round of the Jupiter PG tourney last October)the Indiana Yankees, (Rated 8th in the B.A.rankings, finished 2nd at PG Natl Champ.)the Indiana Bulls, Norwood Blues, Top Tier,Express, and Lombard Lightning. Why would anyone want to make all these (and others) go away? Does ANYONE think these kids would rather play 1 HS season instead of 2 seasons w/ the possibility of playing a signifigantly better brand of ball against superior competition? Can't believe, now that we have this # of excellent summer programs available that we should re-invent the process. Don't forget that most of the Chicagoland boys play a HS schedule along w/Travel. I really think the midwest can match up w/ any region now. The kids can gain the experience necessary to play at pro and D1 levels equal to cal, fla, tx etc. (30 HS 40 travel 20 HS summer 20 HS fall. This totals 110 games which gives them 2 very competitive seasons and 2 other seasons to work on their game. The HS coaches have learned that the players who travel when they are young, for the most part are their best players due to the experience factor. This doesn't change when they get to HS. All top level D1 coaches if they could choose the same player with or without experience would choose the seasoned player.
Taratko, I beg to differ. This is exactly my point. When the Wisconsin Blazers and the Indiana Yankees can dominate the biggest and best National tourneys, then we are on a par w/ the south and west. (as far as talent is concerned) My sons and many others I have followed closely played for Norwood over the last 10 years or so. They could easily be a final 4 team at 1 of the 72 team Nationals. It is you who are wrong and we simply must change this inferior defeatist attitude that so many take as gospel. Once again, Illinois is # 4 in M.L.B. players. Considering the population of Fl,Tx and Cal. that is a # that strongly supports my argument. ........... As far as a Midwest Tourney w/ all these teams involved---NOW YOUR TALKING! By the way I have seen the Westministers and Tampa Jesuits play and those terriffis baseball programs have nothing on OPRF, Providence,LT, Stagg or many others in Illinois. We have gotten to the point where the only REAL difference is FACILITIES and WEATHER.......... If I took your thinking as Gospel my kid would be going to Valpo instead of FSU!
Tar,

We (Blazers) were 4-0 in pool play (scoring 21 and giving up 3) and were the #1 seed out of 72 in Jupiter!

We lost to the eventual runner up Dallas Tigers in the PG tiebreaker in the round of 8 (extra inning load the bases with 1 out).

Believe me we had 4 pitchers left in the barn...we had plenty of depth.

Not to be argumentative but I agree with Sox...the difference in overall talent is not what it once was... I think though that overall you find a higher volume of top and polished prosepcts in the warm weather states but there are so many tournament teams down there that the talent sometimes gets spread out.

What some of the teams in our area who've had success have been able to do is concentrate our talent onto 1 or 2 teams. Problem is you have to work harder scouting (because of the lower # of top prospects) and get these kids to play for your team. That problem doesn't exsist in FL, CA, GA, TX...plenty of talent to go around.
