St JOhns took the air out of the (UNC) stadium last night with a 3 run walk-off bomb to win the game (St Johns was home team) against UNC. I've never seen a stadium go that quiet that quickly. St Johns is in the drivers seat now at 2-0. Unfortunetly the Cornell Big Red have been eliminated but we had our opportunities to extend our season.

I saw Prepster after the game. We agreed that the walk off homer is just great college baseball.

I agree and it doesn't matter who hit the walk off homerun, this is just great college baseball.

It's interesting to hear the complaints when the field is first laid out, but after all is said and done, it usually becomes an interesting weekend.

Saw a first for me at Sunken Diamond last night...a bases-loaded clearing wild pitch. 3-runs for Stanford to tie it on the play. Had a front row seat to the whole play.

Lots of foul territory there...advantage Stanford (they know about it).

* Pitch back to the screen...1 run scores...
* catcher rushes a bit and throws the ball back towards home plate, in the dirt, ricochets off pitcher's glove towards Stanford dugout...2nd run scores...
* glances off on-deck hitter and rolls slowly closer to dugout with pitcher confused/arguing(?)...finally out of play. Umpires convene...runner who started on 1st but is now standing on 3rd is sent home as ball out of play...3 runs scored. Tie game.

One of my daughters and I drove out to Gary yesterday to see the University of Kentucky-Valparaiso game, and then went back today for more---the UK-Purdue and then UK-Kent State games. UK is out, by the way....

I learned that I'd MUCH rather watch college baseball than MLB. Not a slacker out there, and all in shape. Oh. Saw a bunch of Mohawks when the guys took their caps off. Some Mohawks are visible even with a cap on.

biggerpapi,

Sounds like your feeling the effects of shell shock. I know the feeling.

St Johns will be moving onto play Arizona, and I'm very impressed with them at the Chapel Hill regional even though son's team did not play them. St Johns is very agressive on the base paths too. I saw AZ's regional hitting stats.....I haven't seen numbers like that since Little League. St Johns was playing without their starting 2nd basemen who got hit in the head by a pitch in the first regional game. I hope he is okay and in the lineup this weekend. St Johns vs AZ should be an interesting matchup.

All,

Boy, the ACC took it on the chin this weekend. 1-Virginia, 1-North Carolina, 1-Miami, 2-Georgia Tech, 2-Clemson are OUT. 2-NC State is playing 1-Vandy tonight.....winner take all, and 1-Florida State moving on to play Stanford. Possibly these weren't good matchups for them or possibly the ACC wasn't as good as forecasted. Worst case is that one ACC team moves onto the super regional. Very surprising.

congrats to Kent State and other teams for advancing.

Young man who had gwh against KU was a summer teammate of my son last year. Great kid and family. I wish them and the team the best. Actually the last tournament they played in had 4 players that were going to Kent, great stuff to watch young men you know have success on and off the field.

My son was really excited for Kent. He had a double header that same evening, I went to college roomates grad party for his daughter, didn't get home until after my son was in bed. He was actually awake before me the next morning and the 1st thing he told me was about alex's gwh. I then asked how did your games go, not bad he says I had walk off grannie to end the 2nd game, ho-hum!

Hard to believe St Johns went 3-0 to win the regional, especially since UNC was in with them. My hats off to the Big East for their advance.

As to winning on a walk off homer, it is tough on the losing pitcher, especially seniors who's baseball careers end that way. As a freshman's father, my sons team lost in the conference tourney on a walk off homer. It stung many of the kids/parents, but none more than seniors and their parents, who were just left devastated.

They hit and then they hit some more. And when they're done hitting...they hit some more. Incredible.

AZ swept Stanford earlier this year, putting them in a tailspin for a while and causing Stanford's young radio announcer to search for all kinds of excuses.

Bottom line, they are legit and have a shot at taking it all.
I may have to slink off to lick my wounds, but am shocked at Miami and UNC. Really felt like Clemson has a tough tough draw, and UVA lost so much, but at least App is still hanging in that region.

Nail biter at State today, don't know how much pitching they have left. Hopefully the bats will be alive and score lots of runs.

Arizona has hit everyone. That said, the pitching is not deep after the three starters. It was stunning that Louisville could not put up more of a fight. Maybe Arizona is simply that hot team this season, like South Carolina the past two seasons. On the other hand, it also underscores the strength of the Pac 12 this season. I still think Stanford is by far the best team, even after getting swept by UA. And UCLA also is very, very good. Oregon, not as much, but you never know.

jemaz - I respect your opinion, but I submit that South Carolina is a bit more than the hot team of the month and would certainly favor them over Arizona this year. They've won two consecutive national titles and that makes them a bit more than say Fresno State from a few years back who got hot at the right time. Maybe comparing them to Oregon State a few years back would be a better analogy

Until I see otherwise, they are the favorites in my mind to win three in a row and that is no disrespect to Arizona or any other PAC-12 team.

Cleveland:

I agree that South Carolina has as good a chance as anyone. But, I think it is shortsighted to overlook who is hot, especially when that hot team also is very good.

Arizona comes up short in the relief pitching department, but they have strong starting pitching and amazing bats. Even though I believe Stanford is better, if UA is truly as hot as it appears, it might not matter who they play, especially with a home super regional against St. John's. No disrespect meant, but St. John's? Is UNC really that bad? I am writing UA's ticket to Omaha in ink today. South Carolina, on the other hand, might have to play Oklahoma. (If it is Appalachian, I figure they are automatic for Omaha, too). Stanford has to get through Florida State, which also could win the whole thing. Talk about a difficult draw (for both teams).

And in the end, a team I am giving no chance probably will put it all together and make my comments here look foolish. That is why they play the games -- and that is why it is so much fun.
