That depends if the reigning MVP wakes up in the playoffs where it counts the most. I mean until he has proven he can hit in the clutch he will never win over the die-hards.

The Jays are opening up their wallets and have made some impressive moves to bolster the lineup as well. Halladay and Burnett in a 5 game series will be a tough one.

For some reason the Angels are owning the yanks, good pitching and clutch hitting on their part. SHould be an interesting year oh and did I happen to forget about those White Sox! Sheesh!

All of you people who are ripping Alex Rodriguez simply don't know the game. He's the best player in baseball (now that Bonds has passed prime) and has won many a game in clutch situations. He does it on offense and does it on defense- all with class. Most of the anti-ARod sentiment is due to resentment on his contract. Get over it- you're not paying for it. The same clutch rap was given to Bonds until he had a great series agaunst the Angels. That was garbage too. Stop the nonsense and appreciate greatness.

hah, if ARod is so good, how comes he isn't even starting at his natural position? He's not even the best SS on his team.
I guess I am obligated to chime in here when
a player's accomplishments are being overlooked.

Without shoving a bunch of stats at you, the important ones should be mentioned:

He was TOP 5 in the AL in ALL the important categories:

HR's - First(most ever by 3rd base)
RBI's- Fourth
BA - Second
Runs - First
Slugging % - First
OPS - First
OB% - Second
BB - Third

Had 21 stolen bases which was Ninth in the league.

Of course, the best thing would have been to win the WS. The fact that his numbers were down againt top flight pitching is not shocking.

I agree with calbb...All of you people who are ripping Alex Rodriguez simply don't know the game.

Good morning Arizona

This is a general comment, not directed to you but this is my opinion.

I agree with calbb because he knows that a series is too small a sample size to condemn a player. Anything can happen in a short series and it does! The true measure of a player is
more easily defined in a season long grind...and then maybe career numbers.

How can we use the stats for a series and overlook the production from an entire body of work?

I can change the comment about not knowing the game....to maybe just not getting it?
The Lesser Lights become the post-season stars, IMHO, because so often the Big Names don't/can't get it done -- probably because they're carrying the load all year, many playing pretty much all 162 (A-Rod & Pujols spring to mind) while living up to expectations. Can't say they choke or can't take the pressure....they have already proven themselves by becoming the names they are; I believe it's more a matter of running out of gas.

ArizonaRed- I was taking into account the post season and used Bonds as an example. I'm not close to an Alex Rodriguez fan. That said, I appreciate a great player and he's as good as you get in the game. I want that guy on my team and I want that guy up to bat every time in a big situation. BTW- anybody who really watches close will tell you he is the best shortstop on that team and showed tremendous class by not pressing the issue and playing third base.

I completely agree with the first part of your statement, ARod is the best overall ballplayer in the game today and the deserving MVP.

But as far as classy, I would put him low on my list, the first base line slap in the 2004 ALCS and throwing a fit when Bronson Arroyo hit him with a CURVEBALL, all come to mind.

One of the classiest players in baseball plays ten yards to his left every game and sets the bar (IMO) for class.

As far as the whole choke in the playoffs thing, I'm going to withhold judgement because sometimes guys are just unlucky.

Calbb.....you are more than entitled to your opinions....and thank you for sharing them....I may disagree or agree....as other posters do....it's all part of what a message board is about..... What I did not like was when you were in disagreement with other posters..... you commented that we "...simply don't know the game".

That to me, my fellow Californian, is not right....uncalled for.....and without merit. If you can show me, however, that you have been annointed "All Knowing" when it comes to the game....then I'll take back my post, and will be the first to admit that maybe I'm still just not getting it?

Meantime.....think it's great that some posters are willing to overlook post season play....and the excuses for ARod have been interesting.....he was tired from carrying the team during regular season.....he wasn't lucky.....

But..... .133 is still .133 .....he brought his team to the party.....but left early.
ARed (kinda like Arod, how ironic) and itsinthe game- Last time I looked, you did not post before me so I was not referencing you. Barry Bonds had the same stats in the playoffs before the last series with the Angels and had the same rap. All of those people were wrong too. How many playoffs has he actually played in as opposed to the production he has shown throughout his whole career. To characterize that he's not a gamer based on a very small part of his career does not make sense and, in my mind, an argument by people who don't know the game. That's what I think. Sorry. That's MY opinion and people who DO know the game would agree with me.

I'm not going to play this pc thing on this board and suck up to anybody like the rest of the people on here. I'm going to state exactly what I think and don't really care what others think. That's the problem with society as a rule these days. Everybody is scared to say what they really mean. I never said I was "all knowing". I did say those people simply didn't know the game and I stand by it.
Ahh, come on folks, this started as a thread about teh Ynakees getting the ring. Don't pick on ARod, besides what about the expression "it takes a whole village", etc. How can anyone predict who is going to win, so much depends upon who's hot, who's not, injuries, etc. in teh post season. I follow pitchers mostly, I often can't believe how they can't get it done in post season. It's teh nature of the beast. The way I see it, if a player can't get it done and is expected, than up to him team mates to step up a few more notches. JMO.
ARod is our home boy down here so can't say anything bad about him, local kid makes good. I often feel bad for players like him, such high expectations, for a very long season and for those who really know the game of baseball ( that's all of us) you know how it goes, you just can't bring it home every game, or come cose to bringing it home.

Now here is something to argue about, my predictions, Jays, Mets, Braves will give them ALL a run for their money. Big Grin

Dad04 ...

Love the handbag, too ... good fashion sense as it matches his shoes. Glad he doesn't play for the Cards or he would have to wear red Big Grin

Also agree that Jeter is ... from my perspective ... one of the classiest players I can ever remember. He is right up there with Orel Hershiser as far as I am concerned. JMEHO ... not that I know anything about the game, that is.
the title of the thread was yanks get a ring in 06? i did not say arod isn't a good player just hasn't won the big one.has nothing to do with his greatness.or his contract. but if your paying for cadillacs and getting volkswagons......... i'm not a yankees fan but do respect that some of the all time greats were yankees.not surprising when you have the money to buy the best. no ring in 06

Careful Rob, next thing you know, you'll be designated a HM manager, and all your players will be ostracized from consideration for schollies or draft consideration.

Take care...
