Trust me, this will get to baseball eventually.

A couple of nights ago, my wife and I were discussing the difference in society from when we were kids (we're 43 & 44) I mentioned a desire to get back to some of the ways of life from the 50s. We definitely didn't grow up in the 50s but much of the TV we watched as children was shot or based in the 1950s.

Don't get me wrong, there are many more positives today than negatives (the negatives just get more attention) but sometimes I long for a simpler way of life.

Anyway, today I turn on TVLand and the morning lineup is Dick VanDyke Show, I Love Lucy, Gunsmoke, etc. Seems like a perfect day to go back in time.

And what do I see on the first episode of I Love Lucy?...

Harpo Marx Playing Take Me Out To The Ballgame On His Harp

I just feel like today is going to be a pretty good day.

I'm the same age as one of you guys, Papi.

Sadly, my daughters watch reruns of "Full House" and act like that is oldies TV. While the show is a little over 20 years old, I still shake my head at that.

Growing up in that time frame, I remember coming home from school and seeing Good Times, The Jeffersons, and MASH in syndication. And yes, I will admit to watching the Brady Bunch. I remember Lucy had a newer show with her kids grown up, and it was in color. I'll have to look that one up.
I'm right there with ya Tx-Husker. All in the Family was a classic 35-40 years ago, and very controversial. I remember watching it when I got home from school as a young lad. Archie reminded me of my grandfather in every way.

That show still reminds me of all the struggles that the country is still going through right now. Brillantly written with the two foils of Archie (conservative Republican and Nixon supporter) and Meathead (liberal agenda). Great stuff. That was as close to a reality show without being one of today's reality shows which I refuse to watch. Give me the good old days, any day.
I really don't think I'd want to go back to 80's TV. There are reruns every night of Charlie's Angels and TJ Hooker. Watching those shows I can't believe people actually watched, especially Hooker. CA at least had the ladies.

They way they were shot and acted you would have thought they were bad high school plays. If Shatner turned his head the bad guy couldn't see him following him from 3 feet away. Bad stunt doubles. Horrible stuff!

I don't what happened in the 80's because I think the 60' and 70's had better TV than the 80's.

At least these days we have HBO series and a larger variety of bad shows.

An old neighbor probably directed more of those 70s,80s,90s shows than anyone else (Dallas, Walker Texas Ranger, TJ Hooker, Falcon Crest, 7th Heaven, etc., etc. He got the shows filmed quickly and efficiently and they obviously got watched. He was into baseball and I used to wear a Hawaii Islanders cap he had grabbed while working on Hawaii 5-0 when I played for an Angels rookie team (kind of a mix of semi-pro/scout team) back in the 70s.

BTW, I doubt he was bummed about having to direct Heather Locklear in TJ Hooker, although I'm more envious of his Dallas episodes with Victoria Principal.

Sorry, Papi, I sort of got this thing turned a different direction. I do think some of the best family TV was from that era and a bit later...
Andy Griffith, Candid Camera, Johnny Carson, Red Skelton, the old Disney specials, Lassie, Flipper, Get Smart, Laugh-In, Carol Burnett, and then MASH, Cosby, Cheers, Monday Night Football and This Week In Baseball.
Honorable Mention - Baywatch.
Oops, there I go again.

And every house had a pair of pliers on the TV because the knobs broke and you couldn't get replacements so pliers worked just fine....

My grandfather was a Sylvania TV repairman when he wasn't painting bridges. We had all the replacement knobs we could want. I remember trying to get the UHF station in Stuebenville West Virginia because sometimes I could pick up the Cleveland Indians. Problem was the picture was usually all snowy and I had a hard time making out what was going on.

Sky King, Lassie, Twilight Zone, Combat, The Rifleman, Flipper, The Three Stooges, Home Run Derby (just to keep it on topic)....just off the top of my head.
Comedy and Sci-Fi has always been my favorites and in the 50's era besides some that have been mentioned like I Love Lucy, Red Skelton, Jackie Gleason, Andy Griffith shows, there was Jack Parr show, The Life of Riley, Sky King, Have Gun Will Travel, Gun Smoke, Dragnet, M-Squad, Perry Mason, Captain Midnight, Flash Gordon, The Twilight Zone, Alcoa Presents - One Step Beyond and in early 60's, Outer Limits.

Oh, and though radio shows were on their way out, I do remember listening on occasion to radio broadcasts of the Jack Benny Show and the Lone Ranger when the TV wasn't available. And it was then I became a big Giants fan and listening to them play baseball on the radio.

And BTW, I recall seeing baseball-related episodes or skits on most of these shows.

Standball - Yeah but Ellie Mae and brother Jed were just a little too close.

Let's see, I was born in 1966. The TV shows that have stuck with me growing up in the 70's & 80's? I always remember my Saturday mornings...The Bugs Bunny Show, Super-Friends, George of the Jungle, Tom & Jerry, and This Week in Baseball followed by the game of the week.

Here are the shows I remember most growing up in no particular order. Some were re-runs after school and others were televised with my family gathered around our HUGE 19" RCA Television:

Brady Bunch (I'll admit it too, MizzouBaseball), The Partridge Family, The Addams Family, The Munsters, My Favorite Martian, The Flinstones,Speed Racer,Get Smart, My Three Sons, Flipper, Lassie, Mister Ed, Andy Griffith Show, Leave it to Beaver, I Love Lucy, The Dick VanDyke Show, Mary Tyler Moore Show, Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, All in the Family, The Jeffersons, MASH, The Six Million Dollar Man, The Bionic Woman, The Incredible Hulk series (Bill Bixby & Lou Ferrigno), Batman, Bewithched, I Dream of Jeannie, Adam-12, Emergency!, CHIPS, The Dukes of Hazard, Mork & Mindy, The Odd Couple, Sanford & Son, Taxi, Three's Company, Gilligans Island (MARY-ANN by a landslide!), Charlie's Angels, The White Shadow, Welcome Back,Kotter, WKRP in Cincinatti, The Twilight Zone, The Love Boat, Diff'rent Strokes, The Waltons, Little House on the Prairie (same night as Monday Night Football!), MONDAY Night Football, Saturday Night Live,CHEERS, Magnum P.I., The Cosby Show, Hillstreet Blues, Knight Rider, Who's the Boss?, and Family Ties...and if I was spending time at my grandparents house I watched on their 25" Big Screen RCA TV...Bonanza, Green Acres, Dragnet, Hawaii Five-O, The Carol Burnett Show, Candid Camera,Gunsmoke, The Beverly Hillbillies, and Hee-Haw (spelling?)! They also watched DALLAS and Knots Landing...but I can honestly say I didn't jump on that band-wagon with them!

I watch sports 80-90 percent of the time now, but I do have a handful of shows that I'll sit down and watch with my wife for our huband/wife "Quality Time" now that we're "Empty Nesters". Smile
Born in 1959 and as a youngster I remember having 3 stations to watch. At 11:30 at night the stations went off the air with the playing of the Star Spangled Banner. On Saturday nights one of the stations would stay on later and they would have a movie of the week. We thought it was so awesome to stay up and watch the movie and it didn't even matter what it was. The fact we could stay up and watch a movie was so cool.

I still remember our first color TV. It had 3 dials on it to adjust the color. I didn't get cable TV until I was married a couple of years. It was when I was introduced to WTBS and the Atlanta Braves. It was the first time in my life I could follow one team the entire season. Watch almost every game since they came on at 7:35 on home games and 10:35 west coast games almost every game in seemed. I am still a big fan of the Orioles but I followed the Braves since most of the players at that time were coming through the Durham Bulls Org at the time and WTBS.

I grew up watching shows like "I dream of Jeanie" "Gilligans Island" "The Waltons" "Mayberry RFD" "Gunsmoke" "The Rifleman" "Daniel Boone" "Beverly Hillbillies" and many more like that. Now I rarely watch TV. I only watch sports and Fox News for the most part. To be honest with you I would much rather read my Bible, read a good book, and stay outside till dark as much as possible. I like to get up early and see the sunrise as often as possible and see the sunset every day. I love to spend time with my grand daughter and at a baseball field as much as possible. TV is something I do when all the good things I enjoy doing are not available.

And of course I spend time on here reading posts and enjoying threads like this one.
Born in 67 and growing up in the Detroit area we had numerous local shows. During the 70's I couldn't wait to get home and watch "Monster Week" on ABC. Godzilla, Mothra.. Ultra Man too.

On Saturday afternoons, it was Sir Graves Ghastly and Bill Kennedy at the movies...

On Sunday mornings we had The Hot Fudge Show followed by Abbott and Costello.

Oh yeah! Can't forget The Ghoul!

Green acres is the place to be
Farm living is the life for me
Land spreading out,
so far and wide
Keep Manhattan,
just give me that countryside.

New York
is where I'd rather stay
I get allergic smelling hay
I just adore a penthouse view
Darling, I love you,
but give me Park Avenue.

The Chores

The Stores

Fresh air

Times Square

You are my wife. Goodbye city life.

Green Acres, we are there!
