I do think some of the best family TV was from that era and a bit later...
Andy Griffith, Candid Camera, Johnny Carson, Red Skelton, the old Disney specials, Lassie, Flipper, Get Smart, Laugh-In, Carol Burnett, and then MASH, Cosby, Cheers, Monday Night Football and This Week In Baseball.

And BTW, I recall seeing baseball-related episodes or skits on most of these shows.

Standball - Yeah but Ellie Mae and brother Jed were just a little too close.

Ewwww! BTW Jed was the dad, I think you meant Jethro Bodine

I remember when we first got more than the three (four if you count PBS) channels. It was in the fall and we had a wood burning stove in the basement to heat the house. Dad and I were outside chopping wood and came in to take a break. He told me to turn the tv on and see what was on and as I twisted the knob to another channel we saw other channels appear. We stopped working and watched tv the rest of the day. When my mom and sister got home we kept watching it and were just amazed.

I loved WGN in the 80's because that is where I fell in love with the Cubs. Each dat at 2:05 I would go inside to watch them play because they were just slightly better than the Braves were back then. Ryne Sandberg was my favorite player and he's the reason I wanted to be a second baseman.....although I ended up being a catcher.

Yup, funny, I was just catching up on this thread and saw that was wrong. Still Ewwww! She sure loved her animals, too.

However, speaking of animals from that era, we did have catwoman...

After watching the clip, I didn't realize how S**Y she was back then. Back then I thought Marcia Brady was hot.

Who else can sing the entire theme song of Green Acres?
Rob Reiner was on the Tonight Show a few years ago. He knows the words to every sitcom from the 50's to the 80's. Jay Leno challenged him and couldn't stump him.

Many of the shows I liked as a kid are back on tv. Sometimes I'll watch them and think how stupid they appear now. But the shows provide a warm sense of past. I'm amused how computers back then looked like knobs on boxes. Data coming from a computer was viewed as rocket science.

While I was already an adult when it came on, I've been going through the seasons of Coach on Netflix as my casual, relaxing tv viewing. Being able to project Netflix to tv is a fantastic invention. As akid I loved Rocky and Bullwinkle. I watched it with my kids when they were little and imitated the characters.

Anyone my age also watched Topo Gigo on Ed Sullivan. My father's name was Ed. When I was little I would walk up to him before bed and say, "Eddie, kiss me good night" in my best Topo Gigo voice. When my daughter was two Topo Gigo was on Telemundo. I turned down the volume and entertained my daughter with my imitation.

Outside sports most of what I watch now is BBC generated shows on PBS or one of the premium cable channels ... Downtown Abbey, Sherlock, Mi-5, The Tudors. I also like NOVA and Great Performances/Met Opera. I watch Boss, Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire. And ok, I admit it, I watch Two and Half Men.

Like Coach May I grew up (lived in Portland ME until 12yo) with three stations. We received three Red Sox games per week, the two on the weekend and one weeknight game. When cable became available it meant we got channels 38 and 56 from Boston. Now we had most of the Sox, Celtics and Bruins game. To this day when I watch a Bruins game I can still hear the opening theme and think "TV38 is what's Bruin." For the Sox I still know all the words to "You're Just In Time For The Ballgame" and "Hey Neighbor Have a 'Gansett."

Speasking of the good 'ole days here's something you didn't see then:

While at McD's I grabbed the local paper which covers the local high school sports scene. Page one had three sections, 1) yesterday's boys s0ccer, 2) yesterday's girls s0ccer and 3) yesterday's featured s0ccer game. Also, McD's used to advertise "change back from your dollar. It's more like change back from your ten, now.

Agent 99 and Marcia Brady for me.
When i went away to college my parents called to see how i was doing and mom sez, "oh, hey, guess what, we bought a color tv... and we got cable installed... it's really neat."
while at college we had cable and i too watched the Braves and Cubs until my eyes fell out.
good times they were.... i would even make crossword puzzles of Cubs stuff cuz some of the other guys at school liked the cubs and they would play my crosswords and have fun with that...
