Rob Reiner was on the Tonight Show a few years ago. He knows the words to every sitcom from the 50's to the 80's. Jay Leno challenged him and couldn't stump him.
Many of the shows I liked as a kid are back on tv. Sometimes I'll watch them and think how stupid they appear now. But the shows provide a warm sense of past. I'm amused how computers back then looked like knobs on boxes. Data coming from a computer was viewed as rocket science.
While I was already an adult when it came on, I've been going through the seasons of Coach on Netflix as my casual, relaxing tv viewing. Being able to project Netflix to tv is a fantastic invention. As akid I loved Rocky and Bullwinkle. I watched it with my kids when they were little and imitated the characters.
Anyone my age also watched Topo Gigo on Ed Sullivan. My father's name was Ed. When I was little I would walk up to him before bed and say, "Eddie, kiss me good night" in my best Topo Gigo voice. When my daughter was two Topo Gigo was on Telemundo. I turned down the volume and entertained my daughter with my imitation.
Outside sports most of what I watch now is BBC generated shows on PBS or one of the premium cable channels ... Downtown Abbey, Sherlock, Mi-5, The Tudors. I also like NOVA and Great Performances/Met Opera. I watch Boss, Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire. And ok, I admit it, I watch Two and Half Men.
Like Coach May I grew up (lived in Portland ME until 12yo) with three stations. We received three Red Sox games per week, the two on the weekend and one weeknight game. When cable became available it meant we got channels 38 and 56 from Boston. Now we had most of the Sox, Celtics and Bruins game. To this day when I watch a Bruins game I can still hear the opening theme and think "TV38 is what's Bruin." For the Sox I still know all the words to "You're Just In Time For The Ballgame" and "Hey Neighbor Have a 'Gansett."
