Re: R3 jumps over catcher

RPD, There may be an interp. out there that indicates that "UP" can be a violation of the three foot rule but if there is, I'm not aware of it. During the summer season I officiate American Legion ball. With a couple of exceptions (equip. requirements and NCAA force play slide rule) Legion ball employs OBR. On rare occasions a runner will attempt to jump over a fielder. I've never called a runner out in those instances for violating the three foot rule. He's either out because he was tagged...

Re: coach's view/needs

BOF ·
I agree with TPM, and we actually have not talked to a coach as of yet...well actually we said hi to one at a game, but my son has been doing all of the talking - so far anyway. I also understand that each program has specific needs, and although my son, or any player for that matter, may be a great player, he/they may not match their needs. Also each program is only adding 4-8 kids per recruiting year and from the outside you cannot tell what they are really looking for. This is why IMO you...

Re: sliding on double plays

MLB rule 1.06 defines a "Base". The "Bag" is a marker for the stationary point of the "Base" and there is a definintion for the placement, size, color and construction of the "Bag". So it is not umpire semantics. It is in the rules. The Umpire's are forced into a judgement situation when the home team fails to properly equip the field. The rules are also very clear about not sliding through the base. It is entirley possible and happens enough for the rule to be written for runners to slide...

Game Time Management- ways to keep a game flowing and not add extra time to a game without looking hurried. This is what I review within our assoc, and in the new umpires class: PREGAME- get there early enough to gear up, discuss issues w/pard, check field/equip, plate conference, and start on time - Can save.................5-10min Keep Them in Batters Box- average 300 pitches/game, estimate half are called balls/strikes x 10-15 sec with letting batter move out of box........10-15min Clean...

As RJM said, you are young yet to be focusing on a particular career. The best thing you can do is to equip yourself to be successful at whatever you choose to do later in life by continuing to pursue a passion to learn and to think critically. I would suggest you take a look at this article, which lays out one person's thoughts on what is important to concentrate on in and after high school. It is long, but I think you may find it illuminating: http://paulgraham.com/hs.html

Re: High school summer ball hurt development?

UK ·
How is it irrelevant? Parents put too much focus on travel ball/Summer, how many showcases can we afford to have my son enter, etc? It isn't some magic potion to guarantee every wish simply b/c your son plays travel ball over HS or vice versa. Picking one or the other likely matters very little in the overall development of a baseball athlete picking one or the other. I'd rather practice less with a quality instructor than more with a poor one. The only that gets discussed in travel/HS...

Because it's a public school and many kids don't have the money. if the coCh is that worried about it the school should supply one black set of gear for stu to use-we had several around in LL in case kid just trying position cant afford. Wasn't brand new high dollar equip, but it came in handy. If schools can afford football equip they shouldafford catchers gear-it's a safety thing. I have seen as many if not more passionate athletes that don't realistically have much chance of playing in high school let alone beyond. Re: Rawlings revo in high school?

cabbagedad ·
Rawlings has several levels in the Revo line, the 950 series being the best (thickest leather that will hold up to heavy use). Still, the leather in this series is not as thick as their Pro Preferred or Heart of the Hide. It's hard to put a time stamp on it... some play a lot more than others over two years with travel, fall ball, lessons, etc. outside of HS season. Also, some take better care than others (leaving a ball int the pocket and leaving it indoors/in protective bag, etc.) I'd say...

Re: Rawlings revo in high school?

Not going to hold up very long for heavy use (if you are going to be a regular HS catcher, catching bullpens all the time and playing outside of the school season). Of course, the plus side is quicker break-in and you can afford to buy another sooner

All Star CM3000 (CM3100 if it doesn't see a lot of use) Mizuno GXC10 Wilson A2000 Rawlings Pro Preferred (or SLP custom shop custom, non-broken in, from Eastbay) Rawlings HOH SSK or Glovesmith customs (without factory break-in)

Re: Rawlings revo in high school?

cabbagedad ·
good list by wilson and, no, i would not suggest new every year if you can afford a better mitt. The longer break-in period will pay off in the long run - you'll have a glove that will hold it's shape far longer.

Re: Rawlings revo in high school?

The problem with less expensive gloves and nearly all gloves sold in sporting goods stores is that they're somewhat pre-broken in, and heavily impregnated with oil (which trashes the leather IMNHO). My son went through a Rawlings first base mitt in 2 months, till the point it was floppy and would have problems with scooping up balls. He now has a custom Glovesmith made from CRS leather that was a bear to break-in but it's now on it's 2nd full season and works wonderfully. I had a catchers...

Re: Rawlings revo in high school?

The CM3100? I don't think it would last 4 years as an everyday glove, two maybe. It is somewhat broken-in at the factory. I don't know if any of the gloves mentioned would last 4 years of high school baseball plus summer and fall ball. As for Aso, you can break-in any glove like he does. I used one of my son's broken wood bats as a mallet (just shaped the broken end on the lathe to make a handle) to help him break in his Mizuno. You still need to play lots of catch though to get it just...

My sons Rawlings Revo lasted 4 months of normal HS use, Jan - May. The leather tore from regular use. Wont be buying another one. It was a 950. The good thing is Rawlings has agreed to replace it with a pro-prefered glove at a pro-rated price.

ok so I made a deal with my parents and grandparents they said if I made a team as a freshman they will buy me any baseball glove that I want money not being an issue, so I am looking at the pudge a2k, a pro preferred or a primo. Which is the best of these, are there any other?

Re: Rawlings revo in high school?

awesome deal! three great choices. Primo tends to be a bit heavy, although I have not put the catcher's mitt on my hand. I would put all three on your hand and see which feels better, with consideration to weight, and go for it.
