What size glove do you want? The Pudge is a 32", that may not be the best option for you, depends on how good you are. My son is new to catching (HS coach is converting him) and is using a Mizuno GXC10 picked up from the auction site at a very attractive price. My mitt is a mid-level Rawlings but I might be getting something else (in a 34" mitt) since mine is now pretty worn out. I would probably avoid the Primo because of weight. We have a high-end baseball store in the area and so we have...

Gonna add my little piece to this party. I have a custom a2000 ordered it pro stiff. Got it Christmas of this year, beat it to gods end with a mallet, and caught bullpens with it. I hurt my knee 12 games into my year, but was back for the playoffs, and caught 2 then. Over this summer I have been catching for my JV Summer Team. Caught probably 10 games with 5 bullpens mixed here and there. And my glove is just now getting where I want it to be. So high quality glove = long break in BUT much...

Re: Maintaining a New Catchers Mitt

tanndonn ·
Sounds like the glove will get enough reps to break in fairly quick. All of this will be in my opinion. Don't do anything to accellerate the breaking in period. Games, bullpens, catching off a machine will break it in properly with your hand in it. Stay away from petroleum based oils or creams. I love using Lexol on mine. You can buy it at auto part stores, hardware stores, etc. It's a leather conditioner, very lite. Won't build up or add weight to the leather. Apply as needed, when it dries...

At the PG tourney in Ft. Myers there was a company called "Webgem" that has a product that is basically a hard plastic form that you place in the glove and a neoprene bag that you keep it in when not using it. Because my son has a habit of turning his gloves into pancakes, I bought one of the "webgems" to see if it will help keep his glove in proper shape. Google it to see if it is something that you may be interested in.

I like Lexol Conditioner to aid in breaking in a glove, just apply a little bit to those areas that you want to flex. As you use your glove during the season apply a little Lexol Conditioner to the whole glove, especially the laces (they get brittle and break when they dry out). Dirt is the enemy of your catchers mitt, so wipe off the glove with a towel (damp is best) after each use. Once the glove is dry, take a medium bristle brush and brush off any caked on dirt, pay special attention to...

we are trying something new. a friend works with leather and suggested it. after each game, a long wipe to get the dirt off. every other week of so, rub a little pure lanolin on the dry areas and/or flex points. good so far. it takes very little (half of a dime size dollop for whole glove). it goes far. Lanolin is in Lexol (previously mentioned). You can find it at drug stores in the nursing section.

Best Camp that don't give catchers short shrift?

HitRunThrowCatch ·
15 yo, only been playing ball for four years, catching for two. He's a wall behind the plate, coachable, and as a bonus, can hit. Since he was a late-comer to baseball, he attended a few camps. He did learn quite a bit. Now that he's primarily a catcher, he'd like to do a camp that concentrates more on those position-specific skills. HS coaches aren't much good on instucting, and son needs a better throw. Florida Baseball Camp has been recommended, but perhaps y'all have other thoughts?

Recruiting Catchers

BackstopMom ·
We’ve been to a number of camps with our 2020 (HeadFirst, Showball, Stanford, Princeton among others) and we’ve made a few observations about schools recruiting catchers. For example, at Princeton and Georgetown our 2020 was told that their starting catchers were both walk ons which seems to suggest that this isn’t uncommon. After many of the showcase events, our son would tell us that all the catchers there felt like they were just there to facilitate recruiting for pitchers. We’re just...

Pitchout Play Rarely Called

Whether I am watching MLB or youth and HS baseball, I just do not see the pitch out being executed. Some folks say they don't run as much as they used to in MLB, which is true. Sometimes they say HS and youth pitchers are not able to perform the task at hand. In my opinion it's not really an issue in MLB.
