A phrase

Holy mackerel, those sayings take me back.


The creativity is gone these days. It seems that the F-word dominates everything.

Since I'm a lot older than most of the people I work with, I'll call them Young Whippersnappers or my dad's favorite, Punk Kids.

That one always got my attention.

Yes, when my grandmother exclaims "My Stars!!" or "Good Granny I reckon". Also when she refers to the toilet as the "commode".

I remember a couple,

Like " Get the hell outside ".


I thought my name was.

EH and I must have grown up in the same neighborhood, where we used to hear gems like ...

"Why don't you go play in the traffic?"

One that I haven't heard in along time, but I am sure my father would still bring it out on me if need be! "Son, go get me a switch from off the tree"

Now me being the smart guy I was, I got a little bitty flimsy one, and then came my second least favorite line, "son go get me a branch off that tree!"

I remember a neighbor asking my Mom

You don't let your kids watch Johnie Carson do you?

My grandfather would call everyone he was upset with whistledick.

Uff da, EH? Have not heard that one for a long time...since my Grandfather passed away.

My mother had an unusual one that I am not sure I have heard anyone else say. When she wants to say there are lots of something or some person has a significant number of something she would say "That person has more "fill in the _____" than Carter has liver pills" For example, that guy tells more tall tales than Carter has liver pills or he has collected more junk cars than... She usually uses the phrase in a sarcastic way.

I didn't even know these things existed until a few years ago when I searched on carter's liver pills and lo and behold there is a product by that name. They are also called Carter's little pills.

My wifes grandmother had dozens of phrases so many,one christmas all the siblings and grand children got to together and wrote them down.

My favorites.

1. As lazy as teats on a boar.
2. Slicker than snot on a door knob.
3. Movin sooo slow the dead lice are fallin off ya.

My Dad used to tell me:

"Your rear end will be glad when the rest of you is dead".

Guess he thought I was a little lazy.

Ok, here are a couple from my Dad...

It takes a big wheel to roll a wagon!
If a bullfrog had wings he wouldn't bump his a$$.
That dog won't hunt.

Cleveland Dad - I still find myself using the Carter's little liver pills phrase.....

Gems from my dad:

You aren't old enough for your wants to hurt you.
It will heal before you get married (or married again)

a couple of lines that came home from "The War", and that my Dad still uses today (at 84):

When you have made a mess of something, you're "screwed up like a Midshipman."

When something has been around, or common knowledge, forever, that's been around "since Christ was a Corporal."

A saying that stuck with me from an older grad student in his late 40s when I was getting my MBA years ago..."You're young enough to make 2-3 bad career decisions before it really matters. Take advantage of it."

Oh, for cryin' out loud.

Grampa was a great poker player. He used to call us out for betting low or high with either "chiseler" or "big potato" respectively.

When someone is full of *#&*% -

"Shoot low sheriff, he's ridin a Shetland"

Or

"Don't eat that grandma, thats horse*#%*%"


To get someones opinion - "let's run it up the flagpole and see if anyone salutes"

How about "raining to beat the band" or "didn't like that man from the get go." My mother-in-law still uses variations on those terms almost daily.

My mom used to say: it's colder than a well diggers auger handle[kinda fits right now -5*
My dad used to say:if I have to pull this car over I'm gonna snatch you bald headed!

Here are a few
