With the season around the corner, I broke out my baseball playlist today.  It has baseball songs, also songs that we used to listen to on those long car trips to travel tournaments (e.g. "Dream on"), and then Spotify gave me some pretty funny ones I'd never heard.  The best is Peter, Paul, and Mary, "Right Field".

What song says baseball to you?

The Greatest by Kenny Rogers:

Little Boy, in a baseball hat
Stands in the field with his ball and bat
Says I am the greatest player of them all
Puts his bat on his shoulder and he tosses up his ball
And the ball goes up and the ball comes down
Swings his bat all the way around
The world's so still you can hear the sound
The baseball falls to the ground
Now the little boy doesn't say a word
Picks up his ball, he is undeterred
Says I am the greatest there has ever been
And he grits his teeth and he tries it again
And the ball goes up and the ball comes down
Swings his bat all the way around
The world's so still you can hear the sound
The baseball falls to the ground
He makes no excuses, He shows no fears
He just closes his eyes and listens to the cheers
Little boy, in a baseball hat
Picks up his ball, stares at his bat
Says I am the greatest the game is on the line
And he gives his all one last time
And the ball goes up like the moon so bright
Swings his bat with all his might
And the world's so still as still can be
And the baseball falls, and that's strike three
Now it's supper time and his mama calls
Little boy starts home with his bat and ball
Says I am the greatest that is a fact
But even I didn't know I could pitch like that
He says I am the greatest that is understood
But even I didn't know I could pitch that good.

I like this topic! Some perhaps oddball ones that have done the trick for us...

Baseball Song by Matt The Electrician. His Valedictorian is a quirky HS school song, too.

Land of Hope & Dreams by Springsteen. This was briefly used in 2012 MLB post-season on TBS.

Superman by REM. All ages.

Fortunate Son by CCR. Bonus: It's a meme now.

Guitars & Cadilacs by Dwight Yoakam. Good groove to get loose.

Eva by Ozomotli. Same as above.

Three is the magic number by Blind Melon. Also.

La Chona by Los Toucans De Tijuana. And even.

Meet De Boys on the Battlefront by Wild Tchoupitoulas. Works for me.

Feels Just Like it Should by Pat Green.

There was a point in time when all 3 of my boys were playing college and high school baseball (2 different high schools) at the same time.   Drink In My Hand by Eric Church was the one song that was routinely played at all 3 venues......https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2C6yk3YEYws.   This song will be forever be associated with baseball in my brain.

"The Greatest" is the greatest.

Hearing "Centerfield" in muzak in the supermarket in January makes me feel that the season is coming.

"Sweet Caroline" reminds me of the crowd singing along at summer league games.  I say keep it!

"My Oh My" in the car on the way to games.  There was different music in the car depending on how the tournament had gone; some songs I associate with good games, others with bad.

I came across "My oh My" by Macklemore in 2011, my son’s HS freshman year. It was a year or two before the Heist album (I still have "Thrift Shop" and "Can’t Hold Us" on my pickleball play list) – I told my son I really like this guy, and he just rolled his eyes…

Baseball related songs on the pickleball play list:

  • Geronimo, by Shane Smith and the Saints (Arkansas walkout song 2017)
  • This Town, by O.A.R. – 2008 CWS
  • Centerfield, by John Fogerty
  • Narco, by Blasterjaxx & Timmy Trumpet – Diaz (2022)
  • Enter Sandman, by Metallica – Rivera
  • Hells Bells, by AC/DC – Hoffman
  • It’s Tricky, Run DMC (I’ve got a vid of the HS baseball team dancing to this).

Doja Cat didn’t make the pickleball playlist…

In college softball, my daughter wanted to use "My Sacrifice" as her walkup song and you could hear it play when she was practicing.  https://youtu.be/O-fyNgHdmLI

Lyrics
Hello my friend we meet again
It's been a while where should we begin?
Feels like forever
Within my heart are memories
Of perfect love that you gave to me
Oh I remember
When you are with me, I'm free
I'm careless, I believe
Above all the others we'll fly
This brings tears to my eyes
My sacrifice
We've seen our share of ups and downs
Oh how quickly life can turn around
In an instant
It feels so good to reunite
Within yourself and within your mind
Let's find peace there
'Cause when you are with me, I'm free
I'm careless, I believe
Above all the others we'll fly
This brings tears to my eyes
My sacrifice
I just want to say hello again
I just want to say hello again
'Cause when you are with me, I'm free
I'm careless, I believe
Above all the others we'll fly
This brings tears to my eyes
'Cause when you are with me, I'm free
I'm careless, I believe
Above all the others we'll fly
This brings tears to my eyes
My sacrifice
My sacrifice (I just want to say hello again)
I just want to say hello again
My sacrifice

Obviously, the song rarely got to the lyrics.  She liked the into and thought that it got her ready to go.

I never kept a baseball playlist, but all my son's walk up songs will now forever be "baseball songs".  A few:

Freshman year of college:  Shut Up And Dance With Me

One year in pro ball:  Beer Never Broke My Heart

I think they were regarding the same girl....which is now his wife
