I don't know about pitching, but I will tell you that we thought coach Hughes was a first class guy during the recruiting on our son during the early signing period this past fall. We flew to Boston, had a wonderful weekend, and then our son decided the distance was too far. You can't going wrong sending your son to Boston College. I do know that their #1 pitcher (probably a first round draft choice) didn't even pitch in high school. Should tell you something. Good luck.
Big East, except for Notre Dame, is very weak in baseball on the national level.
From what I've seen so far, only ND or the winner of their tournament will get an NCAA bid.
ND just set all kinds of records playing against Georgetown. I heard that Georgetown doesn't fund any scholarships for baseball.

only dog on the porch.

They have a "bubble" for cold weather workouts, University of South Florida and four other schools are headed to the Big East next year.

As my son is a member of the Big East Baseball Program I resent that statement... Yes Notre Dame is the Big Dog of the Big East. no secret about that but there is EXCEPTIONAL ball players in the BE at each of the schools.. While we personally have had a not so great season, (injuries to our #1-#3 pitchers, lots of freshman having to step up, etc..) There has to be something right about BE baseball if the Top Teams in the country are willing to play our teams.. Just this season, we personally have played FSU, Nebraska, & Richmond to name a few of the traditional top national teams willing to schedule us.
Rutgers is currently tied with Notre Dame with overall records of 11-2 in the BE so there may be a battle for the title this season, 7 of the 11 BE teams boast a overall win % of over .500 Thru today the BE has a .556 winning % against all other D1 schools combined (132 wins agains 105 losses and 2 ties.
The BE is also a known recruiting area for MLB.... Ten former BIG EAST baseball players opened the 2004 Major League Baseball season last week, representing nine different major league squads. , 18 Players from 2003 were drafted in June 2003, Three BE Players were selected to Baseball America's Pre-season all american team, Four to the Louisville Slugger Pre-season all-american, The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association has chosen its fifth annual 2004 preseason All-America team, with four top returnees from the BIG EAST headlining a group representing 20 different Division I conferences, 3 BE teams are on the USA Baseball Top 50 list.
BTW - Georgetown was BEATING ND by 4 yesterday, when a timely Grand Slam by a Notre Dame player put them ahead, as for us.. We took ND to extra innings in one game, and held them to no scores in another until late in the game. Villanova and St. John's list to them by one run. So apparently the BE can hang with ND, the teams just need to become more consistent.. Now I have nothing agains, ND, as a matter of fact, I am following them closely as our dear friend Jess Stewart has emerged as one of their top pitchers this season, I even told Jess I expect to not see him home until late June, after a trip to the CWS but look closely at who they have played, how many of their 35 games so far are against top 10 teams..
Been - Not all players can play for the top team in the country, not all teams can be the top 10 teams in the country but that does not mean that they are weak by any means. Maybe you should travel east and attend a few BE games before you make such a judgemental, arrogant remark. I am sure that Mr. Mom and a few of the other BE parents on this board would agree with me. It drives me crazy when people think that if a team isnt top 10 then they are a waste of time.

Mom...In my opinion, everything that I've stated above is TRUE. I don't suggest for one minute that there are no quality players on each of the Big East teams, but I really rather doubt that the entire roster is dotted with players that you typically would find in the SEC, PAC 10 or ACC.
My son is headed for Princeton next year. Just because he is going to Princeton next year won't convince me now that the Ivy League is the league to beat next year!(lol)
I just couldn't pass up the chance to use your quote and an analogy that Chicago State (3-32 this year) might use "There has to be something right about BE baseball if the Top Teams in the country are willing to play our teams.."....Top teams are willing to play Chicago State (they played Miami and other teams that are highly rated) for a guaranteed W on their non-conference schedule.

I'm a big fan of high school and college baseball. There is a very good reason why the Big East was down the list of D1 conferences in the country. That doesn't mean that they don't have good players, quite the contrary as much of your information suggests...they have some good players...but TEAMS...I don't think so and that will be borne out when the NCAA picks its tournament teams. If I'm wrong, you get an extra coke and a hot dog at the convention!

Having previously been down this route with Beenthere when he has thrown out what "I" perceive as demeaning and arrogant terms such as "hamburgers", "pretenders", etc. when it comes to eastern and northern baseball....I completely understand your frustration. While I understand your annoyance....one of the BEST pieces of advice I have gotten on this board is "as long as your son is happy where he is playing....then it really doesn't matter what other's opinions are." Many times there is MORE to a program than what the win/loss record tells us, or when the last time a particular team has been to the CWS.

Isn't Boston College joining the ACC? I would think that they would have to recruit on an even larger scale to compete at that level. In order to be successful in the ACC, you have to get the Florida kids to come to school in Boston. Boston is a great college city, but there are not too many games played in 85 degree weather. Could be a tough sell.

BC should be entering the ACC Sept '05. When they announced the change, it included a 1 year time frame, I believe. Depending on who's figures you use, they are moving from the 10th toughest conference in D1 baseball, to the 2nd or 3rd (Boydsworld). I'd think they'll be needing better players to effectively compete in the ACC.

The only time I will be near Princeton is when my daughter visits to check out the swim program and coach. My son doesn't play ball for Penn.

Based on my son's experience I agree. He was lightly recruited by BC and a few other northern schools. He basicly drew a line from Jacksonville through New Orleans and was not interested in going north of that line.

The recruiting at BC will change now that they are headed to the ACC---kids will still be able to play in the south even though on the BC roster
I just look at the Maryland program and wonder if BC will really be able to compete in Baseball at that level. If anyone has ever visited the Maryland Campus, it is simply beautiful. And they cannot seem to get the top tier Southern kid to come to school there, and I don't even consider them a northern school.

My son & I visited BC during the fall 2003 recruiting cycle. We spent an afternoon w/ Coach Aoki. He told us that BC was building a new baseball stadium in anticipation of ACC play on the archdiocese land you mention. We saw the architect's illustration. Should be very nice.

Maryland successfully recruited a two-way player Jeremy Hunt from the Tampa area in 2002. He pitched and played 1st base his freshman year. He's back in Florida leading a juco team this year.

They also signed Josh Murray from Tampa but he was a Brewers 2002 supplemental 1st round pick.
Son&I also took a visit this past weekend to watch BC play ST. John's Son emailed C Blankmeyer and C HugHes to let them now we where comming to see them play they told son to stop by and say hello after game son got to chat with both coaches after game. BC's field was a little beat after the weather weave been haviing so a new ball field would be a great addition and maybe atract more out of state players.
I just looked up the Big East rankings on Boyd's college rankings. The Big East was ranked 8th out of 32 conferences which is pretty good. The SEC was ranked first as expected. I was suprised the ACC was ranked 5th, I thought they would be second but they must have dip this year.
The university of Pitt seems to be building a nice program going 38w and 18L this year. Also they swept Notre Dame which is no small feat. I hear the coaches there are doing a great job
