It appears to be an across the board sports issue, not a baseball issue ...

It’s not a D3 issue. It’s a Carleton issue. At D3’s it’s important to research the emphasis on sports competition.

A friend’s daughter played college field hockey at an HA. Over four years they went about 6-60 with most games being one sided by halftime. The team was a social club more than a varsity sport. My friend’s daughter went from a hard core high school athlete to not worrying about partying the night before a game. When I read the profile of the newly hired coach I figured the AD must have been desperate to find anyone who wanted the job.

This does not mean D3 HA’s don’t take sports seriously. Many do. But you have to do your homework.

Mom2, you may want to find out who some of those players are and contact them directly.  If they quit and it was a couple years ago, I'd be surprised if at least someone wasn't willing to share reasons.  Also, if your son is in recruiting discussion, nothing wrong with him asking that question - it shows he is seriously considering and doing the research he should be doing.

I think we have parents with direct experience with dozens of programs. Unfortunately there are hundreds.

So I just looked it up and Carleton Baseball is pretty active on Twitter, including some recent posts about their seniors. That feed may give you some sense of what's going on.  And there are probably some current parents in the comments; you might be able make a contact with one or two - being careful not to be too stalky or do anything approaching being "that parent".
