People don't always believe me when I tell them but... it is a very SMALL world at the upper levels of the sport beyond high school... for instance...

Today at 3:15 pm eastern, at Duke, Coach Merc's son Mike, the starting shortstop for High Point and from New York, will be matching up against Rob Kremer's son Jeff from Oregon, the starting catcher for Duke. This kind of stuff happens all the time at the hsbbweb. It is no coincidence... all the best to the young men and their families!

PS - I should add, for good measure, Coach Merc's other son Joe will be there coaching for High Point - it's all good!

PS PS - be a good time for an avatar bet Big Grin

I played against Mike (shall we nickname him Lil' Merc?) throughout high school in New York. While pitching against the World Yacht Clippers during the summers, I had to learn how to manage the running game very quickly because I couldn't seem to find any way to get Mike out, and my catchers couldn't really seem to find a way to throw him out (and I had some pretty good catchers). It comes as no surprise to me that he is doing very well at the collegiate level.

Congrats to Coach Merc and to Rob Kremer (whos son I haven't had the opportunity to play against, but I have been following throughout the spring due to the good graces of his father on this website) for a very great showing individually out of their respective sons.
Thank You to all. Its been fun so far. I was able to make it down to the first few weekends and Mike is off to a great start. I was following the game at Duke yesterday and was glad we came out on top and Rob's son did well along with former Clipper Joe Pedevilano for Duke.
At the end of the day it's also petty funny to speak to the other coach. He's really enjoying the coaching end of things even though he did have the tough decision after a few invites to go to spring training and playing again. I think hee has found his niche.

My wife and I will be traveling down again this weekend. Duke gets a shot at the rematch on the 11th.

Congratulations to both Dad's and their Sons

What a great thing for these young men to have earned the opportunity to compete at such a high level ... and for Lil' Merc to have earned the headlines in the post-game write-up on the DUKE website.

Special congrats go out to Coach Merc, because I know he can proudly claim more than one "son" on the HPU team. A number of his Clippers are now competing for the Panthers.

At our house, we had a special interest in the game, hoping to see if Duke walk-on Josh Ruffin might take the mound. SP_son played with Josh one year in HS. Little used in HS, Josh went to Duke as any other student; played club ball in the fall; and earned an invite to a walk-on try-out this spring ... and made the team.

Best wishes to young Mercurio, Kremer & Ruffin in their collegiate baseball careers ... and betond.
