Connie Mack World Series field set
The conclusion of regional tournaments over the weekend finalized the field for t he 42nd Connie Mack World Series.
The first game is slated for 5:15 p.m. on Friday. The Dallas Baseball Academy won the South Plains regional championship and will play the North Atlantic champion South Troy (N.Y.) Dodgers. Dallas, also known as the D-Bats, is making their first appearance in Farmington. The Dodgers played in the 2004 Series.
Opening ceremonies are slated to take place between the first two games on Friday. At 8 p.m., the host Rattlers take the field against West champion Southern Cal Renegades.
A triple header on Saturday rounds out the first round.
Saturday's first game pits the two clubs that advanced to Farmington through qualifying tournaments during the summer. 2005 World Series runnerups Trombly (Calif.) Braves won the Troy, N.Y., qualifier. The Lake Highlands (Dallas) Wildcats won the qualifier in Denver to return to Farmington for the second time in club history after being eliminated in two games last year. The two teams face off at Noon on Saturday with a bye into the third round on the line.
"Our goal when we I started this program four years ago was to get to the World Series in three years," Braves coach Steve Trombly said. "It was awesome to get there in three and now to be coming back is amazing."
East Central champion and World Series fixture Midland (Ohio) Redskins play the North Farmington West Bloomfield (Mich.) Cobras at 5:15 p.m. on Saturday. The Cobras are making their second World Series appearance after winning the North Central regional championship.
"We set a goal in January and our first goal was to go to Farmington, New Mexico," Cobras coach Lee Bjerke said. "The kids worked at really hard since January. We have a team that has a mixture of guys that are going to Division I schools or smaller schools, but they all have a lot of heart."
The Southeast regional champion Florida Bombers return for their second World Series appearance and first since going 2-2 at the 2004 Series. The Bombers face the Puerto Rico (Carolina) Raiders at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
