Current District 5-5A (future 7-5A) Discussion

Thought I would start this discussion. My son plays catcher for Cedar Hill and I think they have a chance at a playoff spot this year. They have a legit #1 senior that will most likely be drafted, and some good talent coming up. Last year Mansfield, Legacy and SGP dominated, and I expect they will again, (although SGP lost some awesome players). I know Midlothian has alot of young talent, but not very knowledgeable about other teams.

I suspect Mansfield will be cream of the crop this year. SGP lost some studs but they are an aggressive knowledgeable group...I would expect them to field a high level team again. Not sure what to expect from Midlothian...have several younger kids being given an opportunity which feels like it may be a philosophy shift but I have only been there one year so not sure. Team speed and defense should be better this year...not sure of offense or pitching. Our park, with a 40 mph wind blowing in, felt like it always kept us in games last season...again only been with the HS a year.

For what it's worth -
Nimitz first scrimmage of the year was against Mansfield.
Before I describe the out come, understand Nimitz is a young Varsity squad composed of a few seniors and juniors, mostly sophomores and a fish. Our coach is not allowing pitchers to throw curves right now either.
After 10 innings against Mansfield, Nimitz was behind 14-4. Nimitz committed at least 13 errors and had 5 or 6 K's watching. Nimitz is a better team than that performance indicated. It was a great lesson and humbling experience for them.
Mansfield is a quality team. Some good pitching and particularly good hitters. As a former coach myself, they are the type of team I always wanted to face because it made my squad better afterwards.
Since that experience, Nimitz has faced Creekview (won 10-2, 10 innings, no Nimitz curves thrown) and Arlington Seguin (won 10-1, 10 innings, no curves).
Nimitz faces Mansfield again, this time at Nimitz 2/20. Mansfield seems to be the real deal. Looking forward to another 'playing up' experience.

Mansfield was at Nimitz 2/20. Nimitz started a different pitcher for 1 inning each.
Sophomore LHP 1st, Sophomore RHP 2nd, another Sophomore RHP 3rd, another sophomore LHP 4th,
freshman RHP 5th, junior RHP 6th, senior RHP 7th.
Mansfield started LHP (looked like a junior or senior) 3 innings and bringin' it, RHP 2 innings, LHP last 2 innings.
Final 2-1 Mansfield.
Nimitz played much better than the first go around against them. They still need to tighten up the D.
Get production at the plate with runners in scoring position.
They had their chance.

Mansfield defeated Timberview last night 9-3 to start off District play. 6 good innings by Tiger Sr. pitcher Matt Michalski (#19) (7 hits 7 K's), and a 6 run 4th inning sealed the Wolves fate. Sr. pitcher Sam Hilliard (#21) closed it out, giving up a leadoff hit but ending it with 3 straight K's. The Tigers are 8-3-1 overall and looking better with every game. The Baylor Grapevine tourney saw them get wins over Waxahachie, Boswell & Mansfield Legacy. A 4-3 loss to Colleyville and a 9-7 loss to El Paso Franklin were well played and the Tigers had thier chances to win. During the Tyde Classic tourney last week, the Tigers had nice wins over Lubbock Coronado, Frisco Wakeland & Plano East. They also had a hard fought TIE vs. Highland Park where Jr. Pitcher Zach Gilbreath (#13) went 5 innings giving up only 3 hits and 1 run while fanning 5.

I enjoyed getting to see what Cedar Hill is all about during the double header against Nimitz on 3/12. I was impressed with Hambrick who closed the final game. I sat behind the Grapevine coaches who came out to scout and watched the numbers on their radar gun. Fastballs sitting at 90, top 93, low 87.

Nimitz is a young team trying to grow in confidence, game by game and I believe facing Cedar Hill helped them the next night to begin district play against Colleyville Heritage. Nimitz had their changes against the Panthers, but errors, late charges at the plate with 2 outs leaving runners stranded and 2 sophomore pitchers still honing there craft at the Varsity level held them back, but all together competing well in the 7-4 loss.
Panthers are tough at the plate, making the pitchers work. Really good team like Cedar Hill.
At least no HR's were given up to Colleyville.
Blake Trigg, who DH'ed for my hill starting son, had the only HR of the game in the 1st inning for the Vikings.
Forgive me for crashing the 5-5A talk party, but nobody wants to talk 6-5A

You guys do have a good young team. It was good to see the old Irving Giant boys again.
