I will... lightly talk about the issue because I am on the team. We are EXPECTING everyone to return, and we want everyone to return. We might lose one kid who is going to be a senior this year but was allowed to play with us this year. We only had 10 players on the roster for most of this year, but we are definately interested in bumping up the roster a few players.
Hey ~ I can do ya'll one better! Not only is it collected, and not only do you NOT get it refunded, you don't even get a call to say you didn't make it. NOT even if you played for the "B" team in the past! NOT so much as a phone call to say thanks for playing for our organization the past two years, but now we're combining teams and your services are no longer necessary. NOT a word! They just take your money for your tryout.

Hey, but as DTiger says, "It covers expenses of the field and coaches... and it allows the season fee for each player (that makes the team) to be cheaper."
I'm really not one to sit here and defend things that I did not put in place, but it's not something new to the organization. Every player at one point had to pay the new player fee. It isn't like the existing players don't show up and don't have to pay. The kids that made it (from my past experiences) are put on a hotline, much like HS tryouts. The money is worth it, and from what I've been told, it is to discourage players from just coming to tryout for the heck of trying out. There was a player, that I have very high respect for, that came and tried out when I was younger, made the team, then didn't come play for us. We ended up playing against him 10 times that following season.

Texan- I'm almost positive the fee isn't anywhere near that.

DTiger, you probably know what your daddy has told you.

I know what MY experience was, and there was NO hotline call, and there was NO player fee the first time my son tried out for the team which was two years prior to not making the team. And, not all the boys that made the team were at the tryout.

All organizations have fees for their players. Do you know of any other organization that charges a fee to try-out?

No I'm not saying that a player must play for the team he makes, but it is used to discourage that happening.

Collikar- I know what I've seen happen. Not to disagree, but from the time I was 13-trying out for the first time, there has been a hotline used... for MY team. This doesn't mean other teams ran it the same way. I'm sorry for your experience, one that might have dealt with my team personally, but you must understand the coach makes the decision on the players.

Texan- I don't know who the "horse" is but I think all the fees for the player depend, once again, on the team. I've heard that it does differ from team to team.

No one is forcing anyone to come tryout and pay money, so I don't understand why we should sit here and diss the organization for charging a fee.

Playing for the Tigers was the best baseball decision I ever made. The coaches, players, and competition are all top notch. While I'm sure that DBAT, Mustangs, Marshalls, etc. are all great, I could never imagine being anywhere else (nothing against the respective organizations, I owe DBAT tons of credit to my personal success).

I reiterate, dont try out. If it's not for you then don't do it. Why all the concern that one organization is charging for try-outs?

There could be a reason that none of us know. I agree with Dtiger, why diss the team. If it's a bad deal then no one will show up and they the Tigers will probably re-think the idea. My guess is they will have a few players tryout, including the current players. That's just an assumption of course.
It usually isn't a big money making ordeal. The number of players that tryout don't go sky high. The Tigers like to pay their coaches for their time and efforts. This is the first year tryouts have been held at a sports complex run by a Tiger. Having said that, money still might be due to the complex for taking the space.
DT ~ Don't take this personally. It IS the coach that makes the decisions, and in our son's case he was playing up and the coach was never going to keep him because as it turned out he wanted an age pure team.

He enjoyed his two years of Tiger baseball and learned a lot, but a try out fee and lack of communicaton from the coach was the problem.

The hotline was used for the players that made the team, not the ones released.

As I mentioned earlier, this is not a criticism of the DT organization as it helped our son develop tremendously! Just a commentary/discussion on the try-out fee.

As it turned out, it was a blessing in disguise as he's found a team in his age group that turned out to be a great fit.

Obviously, it's a matter of perspective -- and, for some, a matter of principle. If 10 new kids try out, that's $500 -- for 2 hours perhaps? $250/hour for some is a pretty decent wage. The organization believes that all parties will benefit. In the larger scope of things, $50 is just the beginning (for all select teams, not just the Tigers). In my humble (and otherwise meaningless) opinion, the fee should be refunded to those that are not offered positions. Keep in mind, I think highly of the Tigers groups -- just not this policy.
