In my humble... opinion, the fee should be refunded to those that are not offered positions.

That would solve my issue with the tryout fee as well. And obviously, it would be hard to disagree with the fact that the Tigers have fielded some very competitive and highly-regarded teams.

Texan... I agree. I think that people should be fully aware of the tryout policy going into it. If the Tigers charge the fee, they should also have valid reasons to defend it.

But I am saying your talking to a wall. The Tigers aren't going to change, if anything, Tommy will read these posts and have to defend himself. With my personal experience with him, he is not in it for the money. The time he spends with his teams and individual players proves it to me. He has helped every kid that has ever been fortunate enough to have him coach them. It isn't like the organization is a "you pay, you play." It's a simple policy that if you want to avoid, then it's easily avoided. I guess I bring this up because I feel people are getting the impression he's in it for the money, and he isn't.

No, I am not assuming that, but if you own the facility, holding tryouts at the facility I would think you wouldn't have to pay yourself to hold tryouts for teams that are going to represent your organization.

If it were my team/facility I would look at it as a PR move, get players out to see your new facility, promote all you have to offer, tryout new talent and field teams that will in turn have players that pay a fee to play that will cover the expenses of the coaches that coach those teams.

I do remember another organization that used to ask you to pay for a tryout and they got the same response you are seeing on this topic. That team did have to rent space, didn't own their own facility, and if I am not mistaken they no longer charge for tryouts............maybe due to the heat they got on this forum or maybe because they realized they shouldn't have to charge to field teams esp. when you have a name like the Tigers....

If it is a matter of needing income, during this stage of their venture, then up the fee of those that make the team to offset the costs you incurred for tryouts......

If a team is going to charge, and a player doesn't make the team then the player should either get their money back or at least get something out of the tryout like a written evaluation and if that is the case then call it a showcase/camp and not a tryout............

dtiger is right

having played for the tigers for a few years i realize that $50 may sound like alot combined with all the other money you pay, but for the name and the great reputation that the tigers carry it is well worth it.

I am not, however, saying that all other orginizations dont carry this name, but coming from experience this is a class A orginization and if you really think your good enough tryout and spend the $50 bucks, if anything you will see just how good the competition is and where you stand amongst the best

Tryouts for the Dallas Tigers will be on Aug. 19 for 10U-14U and Aug. 20 for 15U-18U. They will be held at the Tigers new field at The MAC, 200 Continental Drive, Lewisville, TX. (www.themacsports.com). Check the website for exact times for each age, map to facility, etc. www.dallastigers.org. Cost will be $25 for current Tigers and $50 for new players.

Just to get back on track.
With all due respect to the complainers on this subject. East Cobb charges more to try out.

Has anyone ever considered that it keeps the riff raff from wasting the time of the club holding tryouts? Or that by charging only kids who believe in their ability will come? If a player is average and is going to 10 tryouts hoping to make a team, then if they pass, so what? I think that charging for tryouts is a good thing. I would also bet that if a family could not afford it, then they could not afford the summer fee. We all know if a kid is a total stud and doesn't have the money, he will play.

Much ado about nothing.

Dtiger - I've only recently become an observer (and today a poster) so I don't know your age, but your maturity on these boards surpasses some of the adults. I don't agree with the try-out fee (and it is very bothersome that you don't get a call yeah or nay but hey you took my money and it was uncomfortable for me to part with it, sorry the conversation is uncomfortable, but the courtesy of a phone is not asking too much), but your handling of the comments and questions is refreshing and very respectful. Your folks must be very proud of you. Best wishes for a healthy season.
I by all means, agree the coach should call, and if I one day have the opportunity to coach a summer team, I will call each parent in hopes of helping that kid improve. Someone mentioned (and I'm too lazy to re-read) that maybe there should be an evaluation given to each kid, and I think that truly is a great idea. Each player would know what he needs to work on. I think a phone call to the kids unable to make the team would be almost like an evaluation-- without the sheet and difficult to read hand-writing.

Having said that, I am not in a position to tell anyone how to do their job with the Tigers. Tommy and every coach do a great job for the kids.
