Here's a newbie question from the "cheapseats"...

Do the leaderboard stats include pre-season tournaments? Do they include all games or just district?

Some teams look like they have played alot of games and some teams look like they have played a few? Do some teams report tournament data while other teams don't?

Who submits the data....the schools? Many schools have no data...does that mean no stats have been submitted?

Thanks for any light you can shed on this ... your input is appreciated.
cheapseats,

Here is a response to your questions in the order you asked, but the order does effect the response, so read all of, then think about it.

The leaaderboard can include all games or just district. You can figure it out though based on the number of games played which on the results page and then factor in the number of AB's.

Some teams have played alot of games and some teams have played only a few. Some teams report tournament data others don't.

Again you have to look at the number of games played.

I think the coaches ususlly report the data but I also know that sometimes a dad takes the responsibility and kept the team stats.

The schools that show no data have not reportsd. The paper just regurgitates whtat they receive.

Sometimes the data is not timely reported.

The reporting has usually firmed up by the time district has started, so things are a little behind this year.

So, with those observations, it don't really matter if a high school girl with a tight t-shirt is doing it or not.

But, it is still fun ain't it?

And, the stats that may be embellished by some are lying to themselves anyway.

Keep your own book at the game and then compare to what is reported.

It might be pretty revealing.
4A LEADERS
PITCHING (Min. 20 innings)
Pitcher, team W L SV IP H ER BB SOERA
Kyle Marshall, West Mesquite 4 1 0 28.1 17 0 13 31 0.00
Bryan Dixon, West Mesquite 1 2 4 31.2 26 0 13 33 0.00
Manuel Azcona, West Mesquite 4 2 0 36.1 34 0 17 30 0.00

This is the leaderboard for 4-A pitchers. #'s 1,2,3 from the DMN website.

Do they have the worst defense in the history of HS baseball, or are these guys just studs? noidea

Someone enlighten me!!
Am I looking at this thing wrong or are there still 5A schools (and others) with no stats?

Also, some teams show better records in the DMN stats than I have for them from following this website....do the schools just pick and choose which scores to report to the DMN? I am not trying to be critical of any school...just trying to understand the DMN stats.

Up to the coach to report it.

If you look at the schedules, you will see not all games have been reported. Winning coaches usually report it from the dugout after the third out of the 7th inning...losing coaches may never report it.

Same with statistics...only as good as the knowledge of the person keeping them and properly padded based on classification of player in school. Wink

Add this to your shopping list F. O.
Coaches at all Metroplex schools are given a packet around December.
They are asked by DMN to turn in a complete schedule and a complete roster by a deadline.
Coaches phone in results following a game.
BIG PROBLEM
If a school wins a 7:00 or 7:30 start game on the road and has to drive home for 30-45 minutes they have exceeded the deadline.10:00pm
In the past some districts agree that the winning team call it in. Others ask the home team to call it in.
No consistancy. You have to have consistancy.
Then there's the book itself. Your stats are only going to be as legit as the person on the book or palm pilot.
I had a Dad tell me his kid was hitting 800 once and I only had him at 250. Dad actually thought that if you made contact it was a hit.
SB's are the biggest joke on the leader board as well as what a true RBI is. Believe it or not there is a majority that dont know what an RBI actually is. (Look it up) I don't think cookin the books occurs as much as we want to believe, it's just laziness and ignorance of how to keep stats. Paranoia also plays a part in some coaches not calling in stats. They actually believe someone can scout them off stats. Absurd!
Where I was and it still happens WE CALL EM ALL IN WIN OR LOSE

So it does serve some of these schools/players/dad's etc. to over-inflate their son's or player's stats....they get more scouts and top summer clubs looking at their boys....I know that in the end the "cream of the crop" is going to rise to the top but you have to get noticed first...

Oh I'm not knocking em, I just don't like coaches that cry about coverage and articles and they are the ones not calling in game reports. Never was handed a line-up that didn't have oppositions record and yet you only see the overall record of the team that calls the game in. I'm laying the blame here with us coaches....Thats where it's deserved.
Some coaches believe that published stats provide a real-time scouting report for opponents.

Now we have all participated in discussion(s) about the accuracy of statistics -- who keeps them?, who understands how to calculate ERA?, who understands that a SF counts as an AB for OB% while a SH does not (or vice versa)?, etc......but.....a team stat sheet SHOULD (to a decent degree) show the team's leading hitters, run producers, pitchers, speed kids, etc.

This isn't the best example because the DMN stats may not prove my point but....why would a Hillcrest opponent pitch to Sulentic? (answer: because it's HS baseball) Smile

Disclaimer: my comments do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Plano East or Flower Mound or dozens of other coaches that have not listed team stats.

Cool
I opened the DMN last thusday to look for players names, that my son has played against, or that I know for various reasons. I was disappointed to find many of these kids not listed:

Matt Sulentic (Hillcrest)- 9 HR (now 11)
Tant Shepherd (Flower Mound)- .540 BA
ETC.

High School baseball is for the players. Coaches/teachers jobs are to "mold minds and bodies" or both. I realize many coaches jobs are based on won/loss records, but if you are Spruce HS coach and you don't know who Matt Sulentic is or Plano HS coach and you don't know who Tant Shepherd is, well scouting reports probably won't help anyways (not a shot at Plano HS or Spruce, just opponets of FM and HCrest last night).

HS coaches either should delegate or dedicate to make sure their scores are in and offensive and pitching stats are in and accurate.
