Keep in mind that Eck is not an umpires best fan---he actually critques every pitch---he even had no compassion when the plate umpire got nicked in the forearm last nite--he got heard saying " we need 20 minutes for this? There isnt even a bruise"

I love the guy---he talks the game in plain english

Coach---Eck was knocking the umpire in his not so subtle way

Eckersly is no "typical drunk". He is an admitted alcoholic who has been sober now for many years. He became a born-again Christian and credits that for saving his career and turning his life around. He talks freely and frequently on the subject, not just out of candor but also to help others to recover as well.

Which makes someone who would label him a "typical drunk" a typical you-know-what.

is probably as bad as every ex-pro player I have ever heard with the exception of Joe Gragiola, maybe Ueker. Every other ex-pro that discusses baseball seems to want to spend half their time slamming umps and showing off their rule knowledge. The problem is they don't have any idea obout umpires, their jobs, or the rules. If they would stick to talking about the game and using their knowledge to explain why teams are doing what they are doing and why, they would be great.
TR, both of them were before my time.

As a kid, we'd show up in time to watch the Sox take infield. Evans would put on an absolute clinic on throwing. One hoppers to third and home, right on line, low hard, perfect. He'd make about a dozen throws during drills and it was amazing to watch...

THE PRO'S TODAY DON'T TAKE ENOUGH INFIELD!!!!

The problems with the umpires today is how they think they run the game---expanding strike zones---touch players to user them off the field---ejecting players and coaches at the drop of the hat-- they even walk on the field now, at all levels, with an attitude
I am ECK's side

It must've been my upbringing, but I have a big issue when I hear someone say "The problem with (fill in the blank) today is.....", always followed by some generality that explains everything.

Usually these words come from "old geezers" (I know, I know), talking of the way the world used to be, and I can accept that .....Other times, like this OP, I realize its just a poor defense attempt....

It is not a defense---it is from experience on the field watching how the umpires today act as compared to years ago---their ears are so big they could fly in a good breeze-- yes there are good ones but the bad and pompous ones overtake the game

Amazing how you can judge my thinking? On what basis do your do this--the old gezzer aspect does not bother me---what bothers me is how you can judge me as you do

Every ill in baseball is the fault of the arrogant, ignorant umpires who get worse every day, every year.

Accept that, and you never have to read a post from TWhit again...unless, of course, you enjoy the humor.

It is not hard to judge you when every post you make slams umpires. I have never followed your posts on the other areas of the board but here you seem to have nothing but contempt for the umpiring community as a whole. If you carry that type of attitude on the field then you will get umpires with bad attitudes back. It is a self fullfilling prophecy.
You obviously been around the game and know what you are talking about as far as coaching. Not so much with umpiring. I can't speak to what quality of umps you have in your area but I know there a ton of excellent umpires out there looking to learn all they can and do as good a job as they can. There are groups that don't train and only worry about the money, but I think they are falling by the wayside.
