If your son has a bad Showcase showing and is a pitcher is it okay to leave if you are done playing? My son already pitched all he will be allowed. His team plays today and he will not play. Is it okay for him to leave to get a start on the 6 hr ride home or should he stick it out there even knowing he will not pitch or hit?Apparently the pitchers struggled because of the cold so I am sure they understand that.
Also is there anything that he should say to the Coaches before he leaves or wait and write to them when he gets home. Whther or not he leave early. He did not do terrible just not as good as he had hoped.

Sue, There are lots of things that are viewed by coaches and scouts at a showcase. Not just the ability of one outing. One of those is how a player handles adversity and how he relates to coaches and teammates. Your son may have had a bad day, others may have had a bad day, and some of his teammates are probably performing tremendously. He's part of that team and should stay until the end to support the others like him and cheer for the ones that are performing well.

Would echo lafmom..

Local kid, very good player, no exposure, Goes to a single showcase. Seperates himself as much by his attitude, his hustle on and off the field, his look, his support of teamates than he does by his fine play.

Every scouting report I saw was chock full of his hustle and attitude. Got invited to a high end DI summer camp and the rest is history.

IMO...your son made a good choice, as a prospect, a teammate and as a person.

Cool

With any showcase there are obvious things to learn and some subtle things to learn. You may not know who, what, where, when, or how...but learning opportunities will always present themselves.

If your son had decided to leave early he may very well have become one of those learning experiences...an example to the remaining players of a kid 'that cuts out early... regardless of the reason'. This was a possibility even though your reason was to get a jump on the long drive home.

Your son made the right decision and will be respected for it...and I'm sure he learned something additional by remaining.

You got your money's worth!

Much success to you and your son.
Sue - that is a good thing what the young man did on his own. You should be proud.

Oftentimes beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and they see things that doesn't always show up in the results from that day. I have people time and again tell me they can't believe so and so with all of their stats are not playing at the next level. Maybe, so and so was never going to get any better in some people's minds.
Sue,

While what your son did by staying is admirable, you should not of felt guilty for leaving early. That is if this was a showcase for individuals rather than an actual team he is on.

We often have pitchers come in for one of three days, pitch and then leave. After all, that is what a showcase is all about for the most part. This happens a lot and it does not reflect negatively on the pitcher. We’ve even had position players who have missed a game or even a day due to scheduling conflicts or other reasons.

However, I agree with others here who claim your son did a good thing. Even without any real allegiance to any team. It shows his love and respect for the game and those are very good things.

So, while it is not a negative for a player to leave a showcase early, it sure shows a big positive for those sticking around. I hope somebody who counts noticed and he is rewarded somehow.

Best of luck
I would agree that there would be no horrible negative for leaving, but that there is good in staying, particularly in the situation that you described. My son was invited to a showcase where we knew ahead of time that he was only going to be able to be there the first day. He had a prior commitment that he refused to miss, which was coaching his brother's Special Olympics softball team in a regional tournament. We figured that was a decent reason not to attend the second day. Smile

His evaluation after the showcase was not hurt at all by him not being there the second day, and personally (I may be biased as his dad) he showed a lot of character in sticking with his commitment to his little brother's team.
