It will be a long time before McGwire gets into the HOF without buying a ticket.

I vote for Dawson and Lee Smith although I believe the HOF is a numbers game and I don't know all their stats.

2:00 PM today will let us know who is on the ballot.I think McGwire may surprise some people

"Mike McGwire" ??? Mark McGwire will be the hitting coach for St. Louis next year. Looks like he going to be back in MLB in hopes of cleaning up his image.

Reggie; i believe you are right. LaRussa is doing him a 'solid' by allowing a door for him to come thru (that door ain't wide open to Cooperstown but McGwire is getting his big toe in)

McGwire and his needle will not and never should.
The only argument I hear about McGwire is that lots of people were doing it and we can't catch and punish them all from the steroid era so we should not punish any. Really? So because we cannot catch every cheat or criminal in society than we should let them all off? NO!!!!

Alomar will get in this year since he's the best all-around player on the ballot. Blyleven and Dawson may finally sneak in this time just over 75 percent.

I'd like to see a great talent like Raines get more support, but he isn't going to make it this time. McGwire, until he comes clean, has no shot at getting in.

Where did it say McGwire used a needle?---all I know is that he used a LEGAL OVER THE COUNTER SUBSTANCE that was legal at that time-_ANDRO ,the at that time legal substance which he admitted he used, was openly displayed in his locker,


Also folks look at his pattern of HR's in his career---49 in his rookie year before he was injured

I have no intention of attempting to hijack this thread and turn it into yet another pointless argument about steroids, so I'll make one final comment and drop it. "where did it say McGwire used a needle" In my opinion he said it when he refused to answer direct questions from congress regarding whether or not he used illegal substances under penalty of perjury. Your right about his rookie numbers. what gets me is that people like McGwire and Bonds were good enough to get into the hall of fame without them.

I've been reading and gaining great information from this site for about three years now, although I have not been posting that long. You are one of the most respected, knowlegeable and informative people on this site. I think you should be on the HSBBWeb hall of fame (if we had one). No disrespect to you intended in my post.

I have no problem with the 'steroid guys', or Pete Rose being HOFers, either. Bud Seelig should never get in, though.

For what it's worth Canseco claimed they both were in Oakland. But one man's word is not evidence. Who knows how credible Canseco is as a witness. But he seems to have been right about a lot of what's gone on.

When offered the opportunity to publicly answer the allegation of steriod use McGwire repeated two responses:

1."I'm not going to go into the past or talk about my past. I'm here to make a positive influence on this."

2. "My lawyers have advised me that I cannot answer these questions without jeopardizing my friends, my family and myself,"

Andre Dawson is the only one in. I don't understand how Jack Morris doesn't get in. He was the winninest pitcher in the 80's. Another one I don't get is Bert Blyleven ... 287 wins.

Definitely deserving. My personal favorite didn't make and I think he is deserving. Bert Blyleven just missed, but still has two more opportunities to make it. Don't think it should come down to that. Of course in my opinion.

The reason everyone saw the Android in MM's locker is because you were supposed to see it. Remember all the uproar of that Android in the locker? That was a total smoke screen.......he was using steroids and everyone fell for it until the steroid issue blew up.

Little surprised about Dawson--14 times on base percentage under .330. Isn't the most defining measure of a offensive player his ability to get on base? Dawson had a .323 lifetime OBP which is terrible. Pujols, Ichiro, and Helton have higher OBP's on their batting averages alone which shows how superior of hitters they are to him. Dawson had whole years where while he hit 20 plus HRs he failed to reach base even 30 % of the time. Check the OBP of everyone of the major candidates and they excel over Dawson in this incredibly important stat. While I agree he was a very good ballplayer and people will say I'm using one stat to downgrade him--it's only the most important stat an offensive player can be graded by. He was known as a very good defensive player while his knees were good, but with the new defensive metrics only now coming out we don't know for sure how he compared yet.

Andre was a guy who in his early days had great tools but with his inability to reach base at even an average clip eliminates him for me. I guess I will congratulate him but there is no way he was superior to Alomar as a player.

I'm a tad suprised Dawson was so heavily voted, yet not.

I'm also very surprised by the lack of voting support for Alomar and will bring that to the attention in my next conversation with my friend who votes!

And of course the Vet Committee got Whitey Herzog in. And I should not forget Doug Harvey and his for enshrinement on July 25.

So let's hang them all based on assumption rather than proof? It sounds like the Salem witch trials or the civil rights/freedom march era in the south. Just string up all those s0b's. We'll ask questions later. Geeez!!!!

I think the spitting incident is still in the back of the mind of a few voters in regards to Alomar. Just my opinion of course.
