Question I have been asked and have wondered myself - If a young ball player is interested in certain schools (could be D1 all the way to NAIA), how early is too early to e-mail a college baseball program to simply plant a seed? I'm talking about an elite 14U or 15U level...certainly not a pre-teen of course.

Is there a steadfast rule to wait until perhaps 10th or 11th grade? If the player is on a good trajectory (i.e. already has size, speed, etc.), does that make it more of a consideration to e-mail?

As always, thanks for the feedback.

I've thought about this question for a day.  In all communication there is a sender and a receiver.  If your son has the talent, desire and maturity to reach out to coaches then I don't think there is a specific age limitation.  However, I don't think you can expect a reply from every coach you reach out to unless you tie it to someone the coach knows or trusts.

Put yourself in the coaches shoes, would you reply to the hundreds of emails, phone calls from high schoolers or their parents....probably not.   Would you reach out or follow up with recommendations from travel coaches, Legion coaches, or high school coaches?  Definetly a lot more likely IMHO.  I know if I was in their position, I'd leverage the people I know and trust to tell me where the talent is or see the talent with my own eyes to verify.

So, to answer the question directly.  Send the coach an introduction but tie it to a team or a coach he may know so there is at least a chance he'll follow up.   Again, JMO.

definitely leverage the people you know.  my son completed questionaires and sent some emails and got lots of polite replies and camp invites.  then former D1 coach watched him work out one day and asked him where he wants to go to school.  no kidding, within 10 minutes the boy gets contacted by a former coach asking him to contact Coach SoandSo ASAP.  Same school had sent a 'thanks for your interest, come to our camp' email not too long ago.

my son has a fairly short list of schools he hopes to attend and has contacted all of them, but got very little response until someone else recommended him.
