Thanks in advance for any help .... My son attended a camp a good DII school he is very interested in. He had a great showing. After dismissing most of the other attendees the coaches kept him and a few others for additional pitchers for drills and workouts. After this, the coach made him a verbal offer on the spot and told him they'd be putting together a package and he'd be in touch shortly. We realize that the holidays certainly played a part in this, but still, it's been over a month and we haven't heard anything. My son has emailed and left him a few voicemails thanking him for the great camp experience, expressing his interest, etc. Is this because it is the newly instated quiet or dead time? Should we be patient or keep bugging the coach? We don't want to seem over anxious and have them offer less money because of that either. Oh ... what to do. They coach has a great rep and seemed sincere and a stand up guy but still we are all anxious. This is our first experience with something like this and it is hard to be patient. Thanks!

I agree with smalltownmom. Call the coach. We were in the same boat with a JUCO my son is interested in. They gave a verbal before the holidays and didnt hear anything for a while. Worried, my son called the coach and he was out of town recruiting, along with getting ready for the season. He appreciated that he called and said he would definitely get the offer out ASAP. My son is 2012 also. Good luck!
Sallythenurse,

I agree with smalltownmom. Have your son call the coach now. Your son did the right thing to reach out and follow up.

In addition, I would make sure the offering coach is still at the school that made the verbal offer. I have heard, and read of stories like this where the offering coach changed schools in the middle of the recruiting process. This is why communication is so important. I would also make sure the offering coach remembers what he offered. One month is a long time to pass for something like this. If you can't get the offering coach to respond to calls or emails, he (you) may need to escalate this to the head coach or decision maker.

Good luck!
Don't wait to contact...be proactive and follow up. 2011 son had several phone conversations with asst. coach at D-1 JUCO who said they were ready to offer, but never did. Son called to follow up after seeing a friend of his commit to that school...coach still said "we're still interested"...but nothing ever came.

Another D-1 JUCO asst. coach from Oklahoma came all the way to Texas to son's school and pulled he and 2 other teammates out of class to talk with them...watched them workout at practice....told son "I'm going to try and watch you play this weekend because if you perform like I have seen so far, I can get you more money." He never showed and we never heard anything. Son called to follow up and, after dodging several of his calls, he finally admitted to son that they were going to have to hold back any remaining scholarship money for pitchers.

Sorry this has gotten long, but the bottom line is...don't wait around. Son was fortunate and wound up at a better place...but if we hadn't found out and moved on in a timely fashion, he might not have gotten his current deal.
Attempt to reach the coach or any other coach on the staff for that matter.

Case in point. My son was seen by a west coast school that "was very interested in him playing for them". The pitching coach/recruiting coordinator said he was putting together an academic/athletic package together, but needed to wait on admissions for the final numbers. He said it could take several weeks. After close to a month without any correspondence I had my son try to find out what was going on. I finally called the head coach after more time passed, and found out the this coach had left to take another job in Nebraska. The head coach said he had talked with the other coach about my son, but since he had never seen him pitch for himself, we would need to get back out there before he could make any offers. Plus by that time is was late in the game and little money was available anyway.

The point of the the story is that you must be proactive and not wait too long without any communication. There could be any of a half dozen reasons you have not heard back, so find out why.

Good Luck
