It will be interesting to see what happens.  I don't think they presently have the stadium capacity that the NCAA would look for in a sub-national regional host.  Your idea of Radford as a No. 1 at UVA, is very plausible.  I think that would be the right solution.  They're clearly deserving of host consideration.

What the heck is the committee doing? I can see Radford not hosting due to the aforementioned facilities. But no College of Charleston either? Radford, Virginia and VCU could be looking at some long trips this week. No hosts in Va, NC, SC, Mississippi, Georgia. 

I noticed that, too.  I can understand Radford (location) and VCU (milb field) not being selected, but I was at C of C's this week and it would have made a nice host site with plenty of lodging nearby.  Shoot, UNC-W who won the CAA tourny would be a nice (beach!) venue, too.  

Y'all are touching on a nerve that has been bothering me for at least a month.  The NCAA as well as the Richmond Times Dispatch don't know "you know what" from shinola about college baseball.  It has really irritated me the Richmond Times Dispatch hasn't recognized Radford or VCU but continues to have front page sports headlines about UVA losses, injuries or whatever.  Does anyone at that paper really follow college baseball?  Are they looking at the same games we're looking at?  UVA is having an awful year by their standards.  Write about something else for God's sake.

 

it amazes me...and don't get me started on UVA's national ranking while they continue to lose...what a joke that is.  I watched their ranking actually go up after some poor play and loses during a couple weeks of the season.  I'm very aware of UVA's injuries and was talking to a UVA parent yesterday about that.  Everybody gets banged up, and UVA certainly has had more than their share.  But UVA is struggling so put them on the back pages and put Radford, VCU and others on the front page.  Radford has had heroics from a bunch of local Richmond kids....why not write an article about their successes or the path they took to get where they are.  Radford's Josh Reavis is a prime example.  He was a bullpen catcher walk-on as a freshmen who worked his tail off to become their #3 hitter as a senior. He has been tearing it up along with a bunch of other players at Radford and VCU. Trust me, there are great stories there rather than the same ol' story about UVA's difficult and mediocre season.  Enough already.    

 

Somehow UVA will squeak into the NCAA regionals, and it will be RTD sports front page news on Tuesday.  You will hear me scream across the commonweath tomorrow AM as I open my local sports page.   Soapbox dismount.  I feel better.  Thanks for letting me rant.

Feel free to send to RTD.  Tell them to contact me and we'll get that party started.  I know plenty of others that feel the same way.  I'm a college baseball fan....I love college baseball.  People follow kids they know and local programs.  It would be nice if they wrote with a broader audience in mind.  I'm considering USA Today but I need to convince my wife to get past the daily RTD crossword puzzle.  ;-)

 

BTW...Congrats to your son on a great freshmen year.  51 games started out of 51.  .302 average, and led the team in many offensive categories.  Tip o' the cap to him because freshmen year is tough.  

 

Earlier, there were rumors about Raccuia possibly moving to JMU.

 

Now his name will be suggested for every major conference head coach opening this side of the Rockies this year.

Yup - I would imagine Joe's phone will be ringing pretty regularly over the next few weeks.

 

As for the RTD - the number of stories they fail to report on is staggering.  Print media is dying a rapid death and it's no surprise. Your point about Josh Reavis is a great one - local kid who never gave up on his dream - no offers out of HS, basically had to nag Joe to give him a look, red-shirted his freshman year and was 4th on the depth chart but out-performed and outlasted all comers to wind up being a 4 year starter, captain and received the highest honor Radford gives out to any student-athlete (their Student-leadership award).  And All-Academic to boot.

 

But hey, why would the RTD want to write a story about that nonsense when there is column space dedicated to a HS hoops player from a private school getting caught cheating and transferring.....

I count 8 (EIGHT!) other colleges in a 50 mile radius of Richmond (not all these colleges have all sports, however). 

The Pilot did have an article about college baseball this morning.  It was a story they got off the Assoc.  Press about the college world series, but they made their own headline.  Four Virginia Teams join chase for National Title.  And those 4 Va. teams they list?  Radford, UVA, VCU and East Carolina U.

 Huh?  Did I miss something over the Holiday weekend?  Did Virginia invade North Carolina to annex Greenville?  

I think the original plan was to capture Chapel Hill, but they wanted to make sure the future UVA-South wasn't in danger of losing its accreditation.

I have to admit it looked like a 1/2 VA team the other day when East Carolina was on TV, and got to watch Luke Lowery in LF, Bryce Harman at 1B, Luke Bolka DH, Charlie Yorgen at 2B, and then Garrett Brooks came in to PR....Bolka hit nice HR that game and Luke and Bryce had solid hits.

ECU has more than its share of Richmond & Virginia area talent and it just as deserving of some local media acknowledgement.  I'd really like to see ECU make some noise down in Miami tomorrow.  They have a tremendous opportunity in front of them.  But, they are going to have their hands full.  Columbia is extremely pesky and extremely well coached.

Here's hoping for a great weekend for our Virginia schools in the Regionals. I think Radford has a tough draw in Nashville but they have a team of older kids and I don't think the spotlight will overwhelm them…and I think they have a good shot against Indiana with Boyles on the mound. 

 

VCU gets a tough draw. Dallas Baptist has arms, bats…the whole deal. Plus they may be smarting by not getting a national seed, even with the #2 RPI. Plus, Texas (CWS last year) and Oregon State (should have hosted) lie in the weeds. I don't have much hope for a good showing from VCU - but will be pulling for them.

 

I think Virginia got a great draw. Neutral site, weak #1 seed in UCSB. To me, Southern Cal is the team to beat in that region. SDSU and UCSB have one big arm a piece - and they will be pitching on Day 1. If Va can get by the Men of Troy in game 1, I think they win and advance. They are a resilient bunch and I just feel like they have a good run left in them.

 

It's going to be a great weekend!

RTD is not unique. Very little coverage in the WaPo of any college baseball, including UMD, GMU, GW, JMU, VT, etc. You'd think that the rise of the UMD program would warrant some attention given the size of the alum, but nothing.

 

There's a good reason: they all follow the leader. So when ESPN starts dedicating a section of their web site to collegiate baseball, and a portion of SC to collegiate baseball (outside of the CWS), then we'll see other media outlets follow suit. Until then, the NBA, NHL and MLB will continue to garner most of the attention. Oh, and don't forget the interminable coverage of the NFL draft.

After these pre-tournament prognostications, it's safe to say I know nothing about college baseball.

VCU looked good.  I hope Varina grad Darian Carpenter's hand injury doesn't keep him out of the lineup the rest of the way.  His bat will be missed.
