Okay now, back to a serious question:

Will everyone who is interested, please "vote" either here or in a PM to me, on these items:

1. How many Hall of Famers should be inducted in this initial vote? (Please check the LIST OF NOMINEES on page 3 of this thread first.)

2. What method of voting for induction should we use?
A. Strictly a popular vote; every member can vote once and the top 5, or 8, or 10 vote-getters (see item 1) receive the honor.
B. Voting by a panel/committee of experts, Old-Timers, or even all the nominees themselves.
C. Other, or some combination of A and B - explain please! Smile

I just noticed this. That was good!!!!

To answer your questions:

1. How many Hall of Famers should be inducted in this initial vote? Initially - 10. Going forward - 3-5

2. What method of voting for induction should we use? I think a popular vote would be best.

I like the idea of an initial class of 10 - with subsequent years being 3-5 based upon some threshold.

I'd suggest the initial ten be the top 8 votegetters in a popular election plus 2 selected by an oldtimers committee - so that some of the early participants are not overlooked.

Perhaps we could hold the elections such that the inductees are named for Opening day each year? Gives us all something to do in the winter Smile

TR,

You are a very caring hubby to nominate your wife, but now you have to get her to register and post so you can be considered for the "Hall of Fame Couples" category. I love that idea!

SSmom, there are:

6258 registered males, and
644 registered females

...which leaves 2349 who did not specify their gender.

Wow, I am surprised that only about 10% who do specify are females - I expected perhaps 75/25.

That was an interesting question, and I am also curious to know:

How many married couples both post in the forums?

How many other families where a parent and at least one of the children post?

There..I'm back. Just as I thought...you can change my status from undeclared to male.

If you need to find me just look to the Northeast...that's the direction it appears I'm headed.

lafmom,

You DO belong on the list of nominees! Though you have been registered for a "mere" 2+ years, you are a very special moderator who is famous for hall-of-fame service to the HSBBWeb community! I never realized how many people would belong on the list of nominees when this topic started.

Julie
Just started reading this thread. I understand the idea and it has a certain charm, but I wonder if it makes the community more closed than open and whether the idea actually is a good one.

By the way, I noticed mention of the Principal, and I was very glad. He was a great guy (and a Hokie) who took his nephew (who later played at Liberty) under his wing. He was an educator and a good man in the mountains of Virginia and he died in 2003. If there was a Hall of Fame poster here, it was him.

I have no answers...but a question worth discussing. To some extent # of posts stratifies posters. A HOF would be a suitable and well earned honor for some real HSBBW giants...but would it institutionalize a caste system? Would it encourage, discourage or have no effect on the likelihood of new posters to participate, or be heard? Would it change the flow of information as it currently exists? What does Bob think?

Jemaz,

I’m also glad you brought that up. I think “principal” should be honored and Bob Howdeshall too. Julie at some point in the future also.

More importantly, I think people are starting to say what I’ve been thinking. Why can’t we all be equal? Why have a popularity contest? Personally I’m honored to be a HSBBWeb Old Timer.

I don’t think it’s a good idea to split everything up. It’s great the way it is. When my judgment day comes, I’d love to be a HSBB Web Hall of Famer. Until then I’d rather be just the same as everyone else. An Old Timer!

One final thought on this subject. I could name a hundred people, many who have already been mentioned and many others who deserve to be equally honored. I know it seems like a fun thing and everything, but it seems like it could segregate things beyond the normal opinions we have.

I do not want to be listed as a nominee if everyone decides to go ahead with this. I’m happy the way things are and have no desire to be a Hall of Famer while other more deserving people are not. I have no problem if people want to continue with this. But why seperate a great community of baseball people. I think it’s possible that some people would feel slighted and that is against all the principals around here!

I do think OPP should remain listed as a Hall of Famer, because somehow he became one! I think Bob should be the other living member. Then I agree that those who contributed to the HSBBW and have passed away would be great to honor and remember.

Furthermore, I think the first vote should be to see if we really want this? I will vote No! Sorry if that offends anyone or seems like I’m trying to spoil a good idea.
I observed a lot by watching Chill, a baseball lady from New Hampshire, up there in the nawth.

Her vast knowledge of and love for the game helped me to have the courage to continue to encourage my sons...............

There were 300 members when I found this site. Back then the registered members had numbers, but there was no requirement to register.

I checked the site everyday for several months waiting to be the 1000th member to sign up.

So, I was the 1000th member to register, then about two days later, my number was mysteriously reassigned.....

My son played ball across the country against some of the oldtimers sons like BeenthereIL, the boys in the 10EC states, and maybe once against Zach Duke according to OPP.

(Whatever happened to Hotmama, anyway?)

So, I observed, read, and asked questions and until last spring remained anonymous, except for OPP and some special ladies........

I was fortunate to be able to ask questions of hsbaseballweb, bbscout, Fungo, BamaBomber, and OPP.

Their sons were a couple of years ahead of mine and they willingly passed on the knowledge they had to me. I have been fortunate to follow their sons baseball careers.

I joined when my son was passing from 13-14 year old ball into high school...when all the questions arise about which, what, where, and how many showcases to send your son......and, will he make varsity as a freshmen......

So, I was in the first wave of new posters that benefited from Bubba's showcases..........

And, after awhile, I felt comfortable to answer a newbies question, and, then, I became a FormerObserver......................

As, bbscouts son moved into college I observed that a scouts son chose college, and not the draft. Fungo's son chose college and not the draft. OPP's son was drafted........

Why does it work that way?

And, as I discussed Zach Duke's career with OPP, only a year into the minor leagues, OPP said, "It's his deal, now...........it's his decision"

I really couldn't fathom that, then...........

But, now as one begins the junior year in college and the last completes a high school season, "It's their deal, now.......it's their decision"

I believe there should be 2 yearly "distinguished members", otherwise it becomes a popularity contest and this site is about sharing as a unit and not as segregated groups. There are numerous small forums that each have HOF candidates, and others who have left us for one reason or another who many of us have never heard of. Their voice and their contributions should not overlooked.

Each and everyone of you that have been mentioned are worth the credits, but my guess is that each and everyone of you will say the you are not worthy. This is a team effort and if nothing else that is a message that should shared. Newbies that come on this board should see it is not a class structure. The "Old timer" designation is just that, we are old timers, not special, just old timers. That is a designation that only shows an extended dedication, sharing of knowledge and experiences, and extra time on our hands. IMHO

PG,

Thanks for expressing your opinion on the HOF. I really never thought of it as segregating, do you really think so? I just thought it would be a fun way to honor our great posters.. something to shoot for! But wow, it makes me wonder what former Major Leaguers think about Cooperstown!
