OK,

This is a Grandpop writing about his Grandson...just wanted to know the prospect of "someone" looking at my Grandson pitching...a Senior, High School, Lefty, his record is 5 & 0...,has 67 K's in 31 innings, two games with 18 K's...not super fast, around 83 to 84, has great change up and good curve, Great location, (thats his bag)...has made MVP in three tournaments for 3 straight years...plays Center-field also, great arm and hitting well. He just signed his intention for his choice of a University. Also, a Great left-handed QB but wants to pitch.

Question is: How do you or anyone get in touch with a Pro-prospect...he's been pitching since he was 7, now 17...I'm sending you a video of one of his games he played last year, it was a tournament at the U of Pennsylvania and the Delaware All Stars, (his team) played the New Jersey All Stars...summer of 2009, he came in for relief in the 7th inning, losing 3 to 2, he pitched to 9 batters, striking out 7, no hits, his team lost but he pitched great! Click this on: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7sWKXbIklc

He's 6' tall and weighs 180, great student, attitude and "gamer"

Thanx for looking,

I'm not sure I understand. Your grandson has already chosen his school? If that is so, then is it just that they didn't recruit him? If that's the case, then there would normally be a walk-on tryout process in the fall. He should contact the coach there to express interest and ask about that process. The coach (or an assistant) might then come see him pitch before his season is out.

The description you give matches that of many kids who end up with some scholarship money, but also of many who don't. Lots of things go into that. Being pro-active is no guarantee but it increases your odds a great deal. Conversely, sitting around waiting to be discovered reduces your chances a great deal, though some do indeed get discovered despite not being very pro-active. The bottom line is, many qualified kids do get overlooked, so if you're not being proactive you greatly increase the odds you'll become one of them. And if he hasn't done anything up until now, just six weeks before graduating, he must not have wanted it very badly.
Bob - welcome to the hsbbweb.

I am not sure I understand either. From what I can understand from your post, your grandson has just signed a letter of intent to play at some college. Now you are asking how do you find out if he is also a pro prospect? In other words, his college situation is secure with scholarship but you are wondering whether or not he might be able to skip the college level and get drafted into the pros and also what that might take to achieve that?
Sorry I mislead you, I was talking about being recruited, I really meant "drafted"...sorry...he's had many offers, and like I said, did announce it this past Tues.,his intention on going to a certain University, he wants to stay close to home...will be in the paper next Thurs.,I was just wondering that "if he's good enough, can he play pro ball"...I, and we think he can but no-one has contacted him, (even though he does want to go and finish at least a couple years of college). Thanx so much for your reply!
Grandpop LaFazia
The "pay for exposure" basically ends with the college signing so when that happens you can let "things happen naturally". Pro scouts are well aware of college players in their area. While some players may be overlooked in high school (just because of the large number of high schools), college players are not overlooked. Personally I think it is a great plan for your grandson to attend college prior to focusing on a pro career especially since he's not drawn any pro interest at this point. You mentioned him attending college for a "couple of years"
.... Pro teams cannot draft a player until his junior year if he's attending a 4 year college.
Fungo

Old Fogie,

Thats what they call me:-) Thanx so much for your great and precise answer...makes me feel much better, like he's on the right track. Yes, his parents do want him to attend college and we as Grandparents do too! His signing will be next week, (Thurs. 29th, April) he's actually signed but it will be in the newspaper then, I'll put the signing in this section. This is the Best forum that I've been in, more knowledgeable baseball people. From one old timer to the other...

Thanx Fungo!

Thanx twotex and Swampboy, you guys made my day!

OK,
A little history about me! I made 10 different All Star teams in my lifetime a hundred years ago:-)
All City, All County, All State, (twice) High School All American, (played in East/West High School All American game in 1951, played ALL 48") All 28th Infantry Division in the Army, All 5th Infantry Division in the Army, All Southern Div. in the Army in Germany,(all first team) it took me over 55 yrs. to tell folks I made 3rd team All US Army in Europe and (honorable mention All Army...My kid brother Dennis made 1st team All State 12 years later and also made the same High School All American team that I made and played in 12 years before called "Wigwam Wisemen of America High School All American team...I'm telling you this because my Grandson is better by FAR than his Grandpop...believe me...he's a winner, a true CHAMPION!
(Jamie just made first team All State pitcher AND outfielder) so now we have 3 All Staters in the family!

Your grandson is truly blessed to have a grandpa so firmly in his camp. My dad (gifted athelete himself) did not live long enough to see his grandson compete. I hope he is watching from heaven.

This is completely off topic - last week my son picked up a football and threw it 30 yards, spot on, without much effort. He's 15 and had never really thrown a football, so he was very surprised. He really got a kick out of it because a few years ago one of his great-grandpa's friends had told him how his great-grandpa could throw a football (he played college football). My son never met his great-grandpa, but this story still mattered to him, and he remembered it after he threw the ball last week.

Grandpas matter, and it is a lucky boy who gets to have his grandpa rooting for him.

Great story twotex...Pop will be watching him, I guarantee you that! Yes, I've been blessed to watch both of my Grandsons play football, baseball, lacrosse and wrestle...sought has made me more vibrant, not just sitting around the easy chair watching TV all day and nights like a couple of my "old cronies" do...still play golf once a week...(weather permitting), have been playing with the same guys for over 60 years, (honest). Used to be 12 of us, now 6, but by the time we finish up playing, our stomachs hurt from laughing.

Watching the kids play has been a joy...so to ALL the Grandpas out there: Go out and watch your grand-kids, boys and girls...will make you younger...even though they all, (parents) call you Pop! When they lose, I lose...when they win, Grand pop starts bragging again
OK,
Its BRAGGING time again for Grandpop! About a week ago I found out that Jamie had made 1st team All Conference pitcher, (lefty) and also 1st team center-fielder and ALSO the POY, Player of Year for the conference! (will post it when its in the newspaper) Now...the State Playoffs start Tues., Jamie's team is NOT a strong team, rated #9 in the state...they are playing a team rated #8 in the state BUT...I think they can beat them and hope they start the #2 pitcher and (luckily, if they win) Jamie would pitch against the #1 team in the state. As they say, and I have said many times: "good pitching will beat good hitting"...if he wins...great, if not then I'm back to reality! Its been a great ride, I'll keep you posted.[QUOTE] No coach has ever won a game by what he knows; it's what his players know that counts. Just one more bragging moment for Grandpop!
Jamie did pitch yesterday...a little shakey start but finished up game with 2 hitter, 12 K's and winning 8 to 1 in State playoffs...he's now 8 & 2, with 125 K's in 61 innings...they now play the #1 team in the state Thurs. at Frawleys Stadium, (Wilmington Blue Rocks field, off 95),4:00PM game...Jamie does play centerfield also, great arm, (braggin' again :-) Here's a writeup on last nights game: Jamie wins playoff game!

Well, they lost Semi-final game to #1 team in state..Jamie couldn't pitch because of only one days rest...now its on to college ball! Thanx for L@@KIN'
Grandpop Bob

OK,

One more time! Just found out that Jamie made 1st team All State as pitcher, and outfielder
...not in papers yet, (will post when they are) its been 60 years since I made All State 1st team, '49 & '50, my kid brother made it 12 yrs. after, but this makes me the proudest the mostest! :-) Like I said before, he's better than his Gramps ever was! Probably play Legion ball or Semi Pro ball this summer...no more Traveling teams...did that for 4 or 5 summers...great experience! Lots of Championships...traveled Delaware, Maryland, Pa, NJ...

Thanx, Grandpop Bob

Jamie is now pitching American Legion ball, pitched two days ago and went 7 innings, wins 8 to 0 and strikes out 17...pitched a 1 hitter...he's a HOT weather pitcher, the hotter it is the hotter he pitches...this was in the Wilmington News Journal yesterday...just missing State Player of Year: Jamie just missing State Player of Year!

Jamie pitched against #1 team in Legion ball, their home field, pitched against same guy who beat him out for state POY award, (they are real good friends now), he got 3 hits off him, 2 doubles and a single, finished up going 4 for 4, 3 doubles & a single, went 7 innings, 10 K's, 5 hits, won 8 to 3, here is the Legion writeup:Jamie wins game against top team in Legion ball
another Legion game:
VFW 3420 - 10, Post 10 Newark - 4: Jamie Treml pitched into the 7th inning giving up 6 hits while striking out 7, and went 2 for 4 with a homerun, double and 3 rbi's. Matt Alleman, Dylan Oakes, Cory Purnell, Billy Sartin, and Kevin Green all had 2 hits for VFW.

This might be Jamie's last High School baseball award!!!
He made first team to the National Coaches Association 1st team District 2 Team...click this on: http://www.baseballcoaches.org...alldistrictteams.pdf
District 2 Team (DC DE MD NJ PA VA WV)
Makes us all very proud!

Jamie has started college now and is playing fall ball at the University of Wilmington...got his first win last week, (also playing a little outfield), went in on relief for 2 innings, struck out 3 and no hits, walks or runs...making his first start today...will keep you posted!

It is somewhat true they will find you, but you can't expect them to, you never know who or where anyone will be.

From my personal experience, I had to get "found." After college and an injury, I had to make it happen myself. I trained hard for 8 months throwing, lifting, running, etc. I then went to the Indy Pro Showcase in Fort Myers. It's a great program offered by Nick Belmonte and Dave Marcon.

I went down there, pitched well during the 2-day tryout and was signed by the Evansville Otters after the second day of tryouts on the spot.

Also, going to the league tryouts, I know the Frontier League has a draft tryout every year at a host site.

Grandpop Bob, It is very cool to see you post about your grandson. I wish him well. Several years ago there was a great guy posting on here who has since passed away a few years ago, his name was bbscout...he once told me that exposure is always good, no matter at what level. Having someone sign, even a D1 college will not get them the exposure that they need....playing time is king...if the scouts don't see him play they don't know how good he is. Tell him to work hard to get a scholarship, or more of a scholarship.....coaches play kids that they have spent money on. Athletic Directors are very tight with their money and coaches that play kids without scholarships may be questioned if they truly need x amount of money. Anyway find someone on this site like a bbscout that can give you the information necessary to get your grandson to the next level. Good luck to you

Thanx so much BBWatcher...Happy New Year to you and family too!
OK, Jamie is a Freshman at Wilmington University in Wilmington, De., close to home...he really enjoys the school and has made it as a starting pitcher his Freshman year...playing in Boca Raton, Fl. in March, playing 11 games from March 7th to 12th, (a few double headers)...most important, his Mom, (my daughter) just wrote me and said: Jamie received his final grades this first semester, and he finished with a 3.66.......two A's and two B+'s...that makes me even prouder, most important thing...Hell, I can't play football any more...someday he'll be playing the real BIG game, LIFE! Thanx again for writing, have a great year!

Grandpop Bob

OK, its March 1st...Jamie pitched and started his first college game this past Tuesday...he pitched 4 innings, gave up 4 hits, 2 runs, 6 K's...left leading 4 to 2...had a couple rough first 2 innings...walked four but got out of both innings with no runs...we thought pretty good for his first college outing! Next games are 2 games with the U of Delaware,:
3/4/2011 Fri. University of Delaware A 2:30 PM
3/5/2011 Sat. University of Delaware A 1:00 PM

...hope he pitches one of the games! Will keep you posted!
Grandpop Bob

OK, they played the U of De. yesterday, we beat them 3 to 1...Jamie came in relief the 8th inning, good pitching both sides...he gave up 1 walk, no runs...pitched just one inning, they are playing Delaware again today, 3-5 ...then going to Boca Raton, Florida and playing a 10 game Championship...Jamie's starting the first game.
Here's yesterdays boxscore: http://www.bluehens.com/sports.../stats11/bb11-10.htm Also, the Wilmington U had a Sports Banquet a couple of days ago, Jamie won this award:

Every year there is a draft. Every year for every player entering professional baseball there is a player leaving professional baseball. The more they have invested in your son the more desire and need to see that he succeeds. The less invested in your son the less the need and desire to see that he succeeds. Think about that.

If and when your son does indeed enter this world of professional baseball the more prepared he is to succeed the better his chances to succeed. And the more prepared he is for life after the game ends the more likely he will succeed as well.

I think often of the 18 year old young man I know that turned down a scholley to go in the draft in the 15 round. Released 18 months later at 20 years old and lost. What happened? What do I do now? If your going to think about all the good that can come of something like this also consider all the bad that can come of it as well. That will help you clear things up in your head when you get confused.

I have never heard a young man that got a college degree and later left professional baseball lament the fact they had a degree and the college experience when it was all said and done. On the other hand the cases are numerous for the players that took the draft and later regretted sorely their missed opportunities.

If your son is going to get life altering money. Money that will allow him to have the time and ability to transistion back to the real world after his playing days are over. I can't deny that opportunity and never would. Otherwise choose wisely. There is no going back.

Thanx Coach May

OK...I haven't told you this but Jamie WANTED to stay close to home...he had a LOT of scholarships offered but this was HIS decision...we're a close nit family...we've been watching him since he was seven yrs. old...was always the key pitcher then and in my books "now". His Mom, (my daughter) and son-in-law have not missed one game since he's been in college...one or the other is always there. I use to go to all the games but age has caught up with me and my beloved wife Kitty...so, my daughter on away games textes me and I get it on my computer...like yesterday she must have text Dad at least 15 times! Back to why he really stayed close to home and I know for a fact its true because I did the same thing when I was in college...(only I quit) because I wanted to be close to her, Kitty! Here's a photo of them, then you'll know the reason why he wants to stay close to home:-) Jamie and girlfriend Ariana

Whoever said, "you can't win them all" was right:-) YOU CAN'T WIN EM ALL...Jamie suffered his first loss against a good team and good picher...both pitchers were going nip and tuck, tied at 1 to 1 going into the 7th inning, Jamie had 7 K's and the other pitcher had 7 K's, then the old stuff hit the fan...Jamie walked 1st batter, then passed ball, then intentional walk, then single to third, bases loaded, no outs...Jamie gets his 8th strikout and then throws a ball to next batter, they relieve him and sub pitcher gives up 2 straight doubles, knocking in 4 runs...all against Jamie. They lost 7 to 1...but Jamie is very resilient...he'll be back.

Hey Bob - good stuff!

I have a grandson so I know how much you love Jamie - and rightfully so I might add. Mine is 4 and 1/2 years old and is starting his first year of organized baseball. He can crush the ball by the way

Look, there are threads here where I have posted information and pictures regarding my own son. Nothing wrong with that. Nothing wrong with what you are doing here either. I would ask, in the spirit of the hsbbweb however, that you post these types of updates in our college reporting thread that is at the top of the General Forum. There, all our members share information regarding their beloved players. I like what you have posted here but it is a personal blog directed to one player and our forums are broader than that in my humble and sincerest heart felt opinion of respect for you and your family.

This is not a criticism of you and you have done nothing wrong. I just ask kindly that you post these types of updates in the thread we discussed above and refrain from updating this one thread on this one particular player - your beloved grandson.

All that said, Jamie must be one heck of a player. I looks to me like he was gyped out of first team all conference. I know a player who is near and dear to me who in my opinion should have been first team all conference on more than one occassion but only managed second team during his college career.

All the best to Jamie and your family in the future Smile
