Biggerpapi - I guess they just couldn't fit in another Big 12 team (to make 5) or a regional team from the southeast. I does look funny not to see TX in the field of 64

---------------------------------------

INDIANAPOLIS — The field of 64 teams competing for the 2012 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship was announced today by the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee.

The national top eight seeds are Florida (42-18), UCLA (42-14), Florida State (43-15), Baylor (44-14), Oregon (42-17), North Carolina (44-14), LSU (43-16) and South Carolina (40-17).

The Southeastern Conference (SEC) led all conferences in the number of teams in the championship field with eight, while the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) has seven institutions. The Pacific-12 has five and the Big 12 and Conference USA each has four selected.

Making the tournament for the first time are Dayton of the Atlantic 10 Conference and Samford of the Southern Conference. Overall, 37 of the 64 teams were in the field last year.

Miami (Fla.) is in the field for the 40th consecutive year, extending its own record. Florida State is making its 35th appearance in a row, second all-time. Other long consecutive streaks: Cal State Fullerton (21), Rice (18) and Oral Roberts (15).

Each of the 16 regionals features four teams, playing a double-elimination format. The regionals are scheduled to be conducted from Friday, June 1, to Monday, June 4 (if necessary). Selection of the eight super regional hosts will be announced on NCAA.com on June 4 at approximately 11 p.m. ET.

Purdue probably only one. MSU didnt do very well vs non top 50 either given their 4th or 5th place in Big Ten which was ranked tenth in conference strength.

Sadly choice was pure politics over performance. Dont compare to NCAA basketball tournament selections where equally good teams have to be choosen from and one stays home and the debate begins. Look at Baseball America, Perfect Game and other sites which clearly state the obvious.

Commissioner said one reason for selection was other Big Ten coaches said MSU clearly second best team in region. What does that mean? Geographic representation over performance. Quite sad.
There will always be controversy when sub .500 teams can get in by winning their conference, yet other teams with much better records and competition stay home.

No one can say Louisiana-Monroe is better than many teams not invited as they were not even the best team in their conference. FAU and ASU would have been stronger teams out of the Sun Belt Conference.

Some conferences only have one team represented, which goes to the winner of that tourney.
I wonder of Coastal Carolina would have gotten a bid had they lost to Liberty in the conference final, since the Big South only has one team represented in the Regionals?

Let's be clear:
1. MSU is in as a gift to the Big Ten and its northern alliance. Nothing to do with their performance. Mediocre team in a mediocre conference.
2. Eastern Carolina is in (and seeded a #2) as a gift to their AD who sits on the committee. Nothing to do with their performance.

This is the NCAA doing their best to take care of their own.
Sorry Coach, I don't see anything too special about Wake. I'm just looking at their schedule and record and I don't see any big names on there outside of their conference. They have a record of 33-24 and they went 13-17 in the conference. They went 7-17 on the road.

I'm not saying that other schools who did get in are "more deserving" or anything. But I'm tired of the mantra (in all sports) of "well we play in this conference so we're automatically above all else."
Regarding their conference record which Kallander attempted to use as a reason, Wake did not play bottom feeder Duke this year so every team on it's schedule except Boston College was top 40 RPI. Meaning it played the toughest conference schedule in the country.

Did Wake have up and down season, yes. Was their performance and schedule significantly better than MSU, without question.

But they played NOBODY out of conference. If they want to talk about how great their conference is, it's important to show that they BEAT those good teams. And they didn't even play in the tournament championship game.

Like I said, looking at their particular schedule nothing jumps out at me to say "NCAA tournament qualifier."

Nobody is arguing that. But it's the National Collegiate Athletic Association Baseball Tournament. Not the Carolinas Baseball Tournament.

Great point, and that's why Wake is out and MSU is in. Location over quality.

Thanks 55mom for explaining it better than I could. Good luck to you guys in regionals. I like your coach and my son said early in season that state was best team in conference. At least I'll have good memories of our tourney game vs state.

you're welcome
I think UNC is the best right now, but State has the best chance to advance in decades. I'm usually an AnybodyButCarolina(orDuke) fan, except when it comes to baseball. Then I want them all to succeed.

Sorry if I highjacked this thread. Takes a lot to get me worked up these days but NCAA managed to.

Good luck to all the teams, including MSU.
It's ok. You made it abundantly clear by dominating an occasion to celebate teams making the tournament, with your bitterness The Big Ten stinks. The teams stink. The players stink. Maybe you think the Big Ten should drop baseball. Have a good day!

No question Wake Forest was a bubble team this year. You've provided good arguements for and against their selection. I think if they had made it to the conference finals, that would have pushed them over the top. As in baseball, if you leave it to the umpires (no offense Blues!) sometimes you don't get the call. That is kind of the way it looks to me.

55mom - I hope you are wrong and NC State is the best team right now. My son's team plays UNC Fri 6pm. Certainly Georgia Tech is the hottest team in the ACC, and the NCAA did Florida no favors by sending the Ramblin Wreck down to Gainesville. Virginia has to go through OK at their place, and then beat the South Carolina regional. I'll be pulling for State, because I'd like to see some new ACC teams emerge.
Personally, I'm pulling for the Big Red and State to meet in the super regionals. Best of luck to both teams.

Funny how some people who have spent a large amount of time on here denigrating other people's academic choices (ie junior colleges are not a good choice in some circles for those who take academics seriously) are now so defensive when they are the recieving end of a far less important subject (baseball).

That's not what I did. I stated it wasn't for my kids. I stated in a certain part of the country it's seen in a negative way. Had you made a point of why one school over another in the NCAA's it would have been one thing. But you made a point of repeating it and repeating it as anger not fact.

I was asked a couple of weeks ago about Big Ten possibilities by a Wake Parent. I told him I thought the conference was down. I felt there would only be two teams if Purdue failed to win the conference tournament. I told him Indiana was the best bet to beat Purdue since they were hot. Purdue beat Indiana in the conference championship game.
