I'm just a father helping coach a GRPA Allstar team. I'm fairly knowledgable about the rules of the game. We had a very questionable call go against us Friday night in Lyons. The pitch deflected off of the our catcher's shin guard and went into the dugout. They had a runner on second base. The umpire ruled that the runner should be awarded home plate because he had made third base before the ball went into the dugout. It was very obvious that the runner was only about half way to 3 when the ball went in the dugout. The game was close and this run tied the game. Whats the proper call, in my opinion the runner should have only been awarded third on this play.

If the impetus of the ball going into DBT was a deflection of a pitch and not action by the catcher, the award is one base.

It matters not where the runner was at the time the ball went into DBT, the award is from time of pitch.

The runner gets third, or rather, should have gotten third.

FYI, in no base award does it matter whether or not a runner is halfway to the next base. Awards, be they from TOP, TOT or TOI are from last legally occupied base.
It can be, sort of.

Take an award from time of throw, for example: the umpire needs to determine the last legally held base by the runner at the release of the throw by the fielder. This can call judgement into play, especially in a two man, or, God forbid, a one-man crew.

But, where the runner is, in reference to his position between bases, 1/2, 2/3, 9/10's, means nothing.

So what you are telling me is this is not a judgement call at all.

Not a "judgement call" as compared too, safe, out, fair, foul etc. Hence, this was a misapplication of the rules, hence protestable. Your head coach simply should have stated:
"Mr. Umpire sir, I am protesting this incorrect application of the rules". Get it officially notated in the scorebook/s. Play on, let the protest mechanisim for your league handle it from there.
