Hey everyone,
this past thursday I dislocated my non throwing shoulder diving for a ball down the line. As a collegiate athlete I went to my team orthopedist, who after reviewing xrays told me that nothing was fractured or broken (thankfully). She also went on to say that my labrum was most likely damaged but due to my relatively strong athletic build I can return after a regimen of pt with a timeline of 6-8 weeks and catch the second half of my fall season. Although Im very happy with her timeline I will be going for a MR arthrogram on friday. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced similar injuries and knows what to expect. I realize that it being my non throwing shoulder is a good thing, but when should i be looking to regaining strength to swing and catch? both non-operative and post-op? All input us greatly appreciated..

Shoulder dislocations vary widely in severity - most severe is typically when the shoulder has to be put back in place as opposed to popping out and then back in right away. I've pretty much covered the gamut with mine Smile

If you are starting PT right away, it must not be too severe. Good PT should have you back to full strength in short order. I have found that I must maintain some degree of the PT workouts (pretty much for the rest of my life) to maintain strength and stability in the shoulder. Otherwise, if you put your shoulder in the same type of motion as the injury, you are more likely to re-injure. Make sure you are faithful with the PT and adhere to proper form. The good news is that shoulder dislocation PT is pretty much identical to most throwing arm care exercises so, being a college ball player, you are probably doing most of this stuff regularly anyway. You'll just have to do all of the exercises with both arms now. Balance is a good thing.
Best wishes.
First off thank you for your response, unforunately mine had to be put back in at the hospital, but the doctors said it went back smoothly, I am immobile for 2 weeks in a sling then once i get back to my school I am gonna start pt with my trainers. Would it help my cause if my injury was sustained out of position? since Im a catcher and the injury happened diving for a ball(all out sprint glove hand dug into dirt to bear all my weight, thus dislocating) would I be in some good fortunes? I understand its tough to give information not knowing mri results but again im just looking in generality, thanks again, any help is appreciated
Ouch, you just brought back memories. My severe dislocation - my arm was flopping around behind my shoulder like a rag doll.
Yeah, IMO, I think it will help your cause only because you are less likely to have that same type of mishap as a catcher, although I could envision a similar action with a head first slide where the hand jams the bag. Sorry, not sure if that makes you feel better. Still, after the rest, serious PT is the key. If you take care of that and maintain your workouts, you should be good as new. I'm sure your trainers will tell you that staying strong around the shoulder will be very important.
hey slatts, i feel your pain buddy!
i play 2bag, made a play to my left attempted to to a slide snag the ball then 360 toss to 1st, bad hop/over played it and rolled over my shoulder while attempting to popup. first dislocation, had to go to ER to pop it back in place. sling for 2 weeks, frozen shoulder= PT for 3 months. then it felt strong but not quite stable. 2nd dislocation i was just getting out of bed(pushup style) popped it back in myself(after what felt like forever) then i popped it out a couple of more times horsing around with my GF, luckily she is a nurse and helped me get it back in. then just this past weekend i went behind the plate to give my teammate a breather, high inside pitch to a righty batter(shoulda been low and out) pitch was approx 75-80mph and that was enough to pop it again since i was completely stabbing at it. popped it back in after a few mins, went out to 2bag for game 2, ball up the middle over the bag attempted back hand stab, and yup popped again, 2 times in about an hr.
5-7 double header but i think i am now relegated to DH. its been a year since your last post. i hope you have had better luck then i have.
do you know of or heard of any type of brace that could be worn to help prevent this? i swing lefty so it doesn't effect my swing.
