I fnally found a use for this forum! 08 JK

My fifteen year old daughter wants to get her belly button pierced. I said that it was fine. I then asked where she would live. She says that I am mean and don't understand. I asked her to give me a good reason for allowing her to do it. She gave me a doozy. Because its cool.

Would you guys let your daughter do it? How do you handle 15 year old girls?

A great parenting tool that I have successfully used many times.................

But, BH, ain't your bellybutton already pierced?

I thought I saw that in a picture (please, please don't repost that picture) and then, I got to wondering what piece of farm equipment would do that.
My daughter is 16 and has been after us CONSTANTLY since she was 13 to get her belly button pierced. Both my husband and myself were adamently opposed to it.....so I thought! In February my daughter qualified for YMCA Swimming Nationals in Fort Lauderdale and my husband accompanied her on the trip. Lo and behold I get this phone call at about 9:00 one evening from my husband asking me "Do you mind if she gets her belly button pierced?" You could have wiped me off the floor. He was calling from a tattoo parlor (I'm sure they are all nice and clean in Fort Lauderdale during spring break! Roll Eyes). Well, I figured she was 16 years old and this wasn't the hill I was going to die on.....I'm sure there will be be bigger and more important battles to fight in the next few years. Plus.....it has turned out to be a GREAT weapon in holding over her head when she says "You are the meanest parents, you never let me do ANYTHING!". Still not very happy about it....but I did notice that it was removed from her belly button about two weeks ago and hasn't reappeared! Just because we relented doesn't mean that this is what you should do.....just one perspective for what it is worth!
Being the mother of 2 girls ..20 months apart...and one who literally knows how to push my buttons(belly included) noidea they can wear you down real fast...my come back was that until they were 18 and living in my home they had to abide by my decisions...I pointed out all the side effects of such a choice..infetions etc BUT when she turned 18 she did not have her belly button pierced she chose the tongue which literally grossed me out Eek...it did not last long and I do believe it was to be a source of shock to me Eek...God knew what he was doing when I had my son as I could not deal with 1 more daughter....BTW she is now 25 and does not give me the grief she had in the past so there is a light at the end of the tunnel...I have on more than one occassion said I would have preferred 10 boys over the girls...the gray hair I have was given by them pull_hair but I love them all the same...God Bless my Mom 4 girls in 5 years... noidea don't know how she survived

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.
Don't have daughters but when my youngest son asked me at 13 if he could get his ear pierced I at first said no then realized that first he asked me instead of getting someone to do it and secondly, if this is the worst thing he asks me permission to do I was getting off lightly.. I think the earring lasted about 4 months, haven't seen it or the desire since (its been 4 years).

I say go for it, then remind your daughter its winter, what does she plan to wear to show off this lovely piece of jewelry. Tell her your not saying no but to come back to you in the summer when its more clothing appropriate (bathing suits, shorts, etc.) Hopefully by then the desire is gone and there will be a new phase or at least by then she will be 17 and a little bit older to make the decision.

Most of teh HS girls around here who have done it have let it close up after a few months when the novelty wore off.

Big ...

I like Duke's Mom's answer as well. It worked for me when our son said he wanted a tatoo ... I told him I would go with him and have a penguin tatooed on my right cheek ... just above the wasteband, if you know what I mean ... while he was having his tatoo done.

He is now 21 and can do as he pleases, but the threat of a very chubby penquin showing up at one of his baseball games as I leaned over to pick up my scorebook ... well, that seems to have done the trick for a while.

Well,,,, I actually know a 45 year old very normal-looking, usually nice, somewhat conservative, baseball-loving Mom who got her belly button pierced about a year ago. She went with her daughter to get it done while visiting her at college. Her husband thought she was nuts, but it is a reminder to this woman that while she may be hitting middle age with grown up kids, she's still young at heart. It also reminds her that she had better get to the gym and do her situps. Would she recommend it for your daughter, BitHit? Probably yes, although not if it means that her stomach will be exposed at every possible opportunity (which seems to be a trend here in NorCal) She would want your daughter to know that it hurt more than expected and took longer to heal than she had been led to believe. (P.S. Even though she is quite grown up, this Mom has not told HER parents about it Cool) I agree w/CatchMom - in my opinion it is far better than tongue or eyebrow piercings(my personal gross-out). If you'd like to ask this person anything else about it, please let me know and I will ask her... Smile

I would presume that this "45 year old very normal-looking, usually nice, somewhat conservative, baseball-loving Mom" has enough class to wear a diamond stud in that belly button opening, right?

Quick question ... will the weather in So Cal in Dec be warm enough for that diamond stud to be exposed? 14

The Winter thing won't work. I live in Coral Springs Florida. I tried to find a good picture of piercings on the google image search and found things not believed that were pierced. I am in shock. So I am going to tell her that if she goes then i am getting mine pierced also and am dressing in a speedo.

My 15 year old twin daughters both whom waterski ask to get theirs done this fall like their teammates. I said fine as long as I could go and get it done also. Being the father, I thought this would be a great deterent. The response that they noticed I have become a little vertically challenged in the mid-section and may draw some attention to the area stopped me in my tracks. I'm sure they'll look great.
pull_hair
H-Mom, I think your response was extremely funny! But for some reason, I don't think it would be that bad!! Would love to see it even. Razz

I think whether they are girls or boys, you just have to pick your battles. And only remember that when they are asking permission to do something, we can only imagine what they DON'T ask us permission for!!
noidea
As an inside informant to you guys concerning HS life, I'd urge her not to do it...

About 10 friends of mine have it, and I swear it's as if they only got the darn thing so they'd have something else to complain when they exhausted all other options.

I of course give them something else to complain about when I tell them to kindly "shut it"...I don't want to hear about their petty problems. I have more important things to worry about (mainly getting rid of the headache that comes along with having girls as close friends)Wink

Besides, it's not "cool" anymore. No guy likes giving a girl a hug, only to have her wince when her ring/stud accidently gets caught on his shirt. Happens more times than you think.

Bighit,

Why do you choose to TORTURE us ladies so!! Frown

I am, of course, referring to BOTH of the very hideous personal photos of you both with and without the tutu. I honestly don't know which is worse. Eek

Geez, if you can't show at least a little bit of class, please don't darken our lovely pink forum anymore! This is sickening! humble

And PLEASE don't show us a picture of you when you get that belly button ring, either! smash

To address your questions in order...
But of course to the first, and highly doubtful to the second Smile - who could possibly compete w/BigHit, anyway?

Nice photos, by the way Big - not too many men have the panache to pull that look off biglaugh Does LilHit take after you or your wife Roll Eyes?

Crusty (yuk - given the topic at hand, now I really hate my new name....)

Big---you need help bro'

An earring is just a piece of jewelry A tattoo is just a piece of art. Worry about what is inside a person inside of what is outside.

My sons got their ears pierce when they were 4 and I have 3 pierced holes in my ear and a tatoo on my shoulder and we are very NORMAL!!! pull_hair

GO NAVY!!!BEAT army!!!!!
Eric- this is a question I have dealt with! Roll Eyes
When my daughter was 14 she begged for a belly-button ring. I said,"When you are 16 we will discuss it if you still want it". I really didn't have any objections, but my husband did and I felt that 14 was too young.

She turned 16 and still wanted it as she reminded us quite frequently. I said,"if you still want it when you are 17 and your Dad says OK, we can go for it.

She turned 17- it was the only thing she asked for for her birthday (already had the cell phone!!!) Razzand we went over and had it done.

My reasoning was that she is such a good kid, great grades, National Honor Society, AP classes, helps around the house- a lot- plays competitive Volleyball year round and still has time for church and volunteer work. This is a solid kid who wants the current hot item. I reminded my husband that he had long hair in highschool and turned out just fine.

She is thumb thumb as happy as a lark with it and it hasn't hurt her at all. I agree with the others who say, "Pick your battles". There are bigger issues out there. A belly button ring is, in my opinion, and adornment- not a freaky thing.!
I guess I will go with her and get mine pierced as well. Not! Thanks for the perspectives.

Hot Mama, all in good fun, ya know?

Amom, btw, winning 5a state volleyball championship is not anything to sneeze at. You raise quite the athlete there. I value your friendship and advice. Congrats.

If Big doesn't answer before the week-end tomorrow a.m., I'll let you know what I read this week-end.

If there are any interesting pictures ... well, I may just have to wait and let you see them when you get home.

We know from prior posts Big has a tendency towards obsessive behavior exampled by 1. The frequency of his HSBBweb postings and 2. His self-confessed obsession w/ Lord of the Rings. (He wanted to go sit in a theater and watch the back-to-back-back movies for pete's sake)
SO............First Big's belly button......then, the next thing you know

WHOA.......... watch out!!

Think a ball cap would fit over the braids???

Mrs B ...

I am thinking more along the lines of a very very very large beanie ... one that would fit over the entire face ...

That person really needs to look into some better mascara ... something waterproof, maybe, that wouldn't run so much ... 14
