Ooooookkk... So today my son got an invite to the PG “Fall National Top Prospect Showcase.”  I admit that after reading all the posts in this thread, I’m not entirely clear.  Is this one that is actually selective?  Any idea how many coaches are likely to attend?  Thanks in advance.

The National and Jr. National will be early summer and will be at LakePointe. I don’t know anything about the National Top Prospect one.it looks like last year was the first year and you have to have been a prior Top Prospecr team or have a National rank.  You can look at the workout results from last year. The top FB was 89mph. Top exit velo 93.

Last year the invite for the National Event came with a logo that they asked kids to post on Twitter and Instagram. There are so many now with similar names. The invite came in January and was for the event in June.

If someone has different info, please let me know.  But last night I did a little digging on the PG web site about the latest to hit my email in-box:  The “Fall National Top Prospect Showcase" in GA was new last year.  Looking at last year's stats, I see no pitcher at or above 90 mph and only ten who were >85 mpg.  So not a particularly strong field.  (No offense to anyone who was there--I'm sure there were some very good players.  And my son does not throw 90+.)

At the risk of getting in trouble with the moderators for PG-bashing, this is really starting to wear on me.  Second email about an "exclusive" PG event in a week.  And this one assures my son that "Only players that were named to a Top Prospect Team at a previous PG showcase or those that have been ranked nationally by PG’s scouting department will receive invitations to this elite event."  What does that actually mean?  Could be my son was "ranked nationally" with 4-digits--one of only 6,000 in the class of 2020 invited to this Major Showcase.  Just tell players and parents the real deal about an event and let them decide....

I think you're right - just means you've been assigned a # score as opposed to 'follow', etc.  My son received this; he's a '22 and we're going to pass

It’s really simple. If he gets invited to the national showcase or the All-American game, go. Otherwise, you don’t see value in PG showcases so do not go. My son gets invited to pretty much every single one and it doesn’t wear on me, I’ve just done enough research to know which ones really count for him. He is committed, and would still go to those to you if invited. They are the best kids in the nation. If he wasn’t committed, we would go to at least one Pg and one PBR every year and I Would choose one where I thought he could stand out.

edited to add: we would also attend camps for the schools he wAs most interested in. I know some say they are a waste of time but I disagree. As long as you’ve honestly assessed that your son could play there, and you’ve contacted the coach, I think they are a great tool.

Ok, got it.  It's the games that are the more exclusive events over the showcases.  Makes sense.   We do have a local PG showcase coming up this month.  At $650 for the event, we have been putting off a decision because we are not sure how helpful having a PG ranking/scouting report is.  We've been focusing our efforts and our money on events where college scouts will be present (either showcases, games or camps).

It’s not the PG scouting report you’re after. You want to be seen by the right coaches at the event. You can metrics for a lot less at other events.

This is why you want to establish interest with the coach, find out where he will be and be there to show your talent.

Draft exposure and it’s a big honor. If my son was ever fortunate enough to be invited, he would be there no doubt.  You would do your son a disservice by not attending. I sat on the third row in the area next to the dugout. I assure you there were pro scouts everywhere.

You were close to me, then. All I am saying is of course you go to that event, and the Underclass All American games. But the rest of the showcases with the exception of the Jr National and National showcases are used by PG as a "feeder" system to those events. If only 50 guys get to the AAC and 150 to the Underclass AAC, that's some pretty rarified air and for MOST players it isn't a rabbit hole worth chasing (for most players). The Top Prospect Showcase which was mentioned in the beginning of this thread, is not an elite event and if you think being one of 3K kids invited to an event makes you a top prospect I would argue the words "top prospect" just got watered down. And yes, this includes my kid.

There are 299 D1 baseball programs. Over 3,000 players will go D1 each year. A top showcase event is not elite in the sense of draft able  players. But they’re still the place to be for D1 prospects if the right coaches are there.

Who are the right coaches? Coaches on the players list to draw attention. Coaches the player’s travel coach may have recommended.

Ma & Pa’s Showcase, Gas and Eat is the right place to be if the right coaches show up.

While this thread is live:  For a P, is there any added value to attending a PG showcase in addition to PG tournaments?  My son will pitch in a couple of WWBA events this year--which means his velo and some other stats will be posted to his PG profile.  If he attends a showcase, he gets a PG grade -- is there any other benefit?  (I don't really want to open the "how much is a PG grade worth" can of worms again.)

Go to events regardless of name the if right coaches attend. The right coaches are those in your son’s potential target range. Unless a kid is a potential high draft choice or wants to get out of his geographical region for college his focus should be on regional events the regional colleges attend.

Going to PG events in GA and FL was fun. It’s where the best competition was. But it wasn’t necessary. Of course, if you live in the Southeast why not go if you have D1 potential.

No, it is called the Jr. National and it is in June.  There is only one (at least in the past). Since your son is a 2020, it would be the National next June.  It runs right before or after the Jr. National.

here is a link to the event details and the top few FB results from last June.

That is not to say the others aren’t worthwhile.  You just have to understand which ones are best for you son.  My point was just that if they are invited to this one, it is exclusive and one they should attend if possible.

Thanks for that information, it was a little confusing. My son is not pitching 94 mph, so definitely a step away. He did recently get ranked as a top 500 player, but can only touch 90 on a good day. Hopefully by next summer he will be closer.

That could get you an invite. Those were just the top 10-15 FB.  There were kids in the 80s.  Good luck to him!

Thanks for the information. I had been wondering if some of his pre-approved invites were something important or just another showcase that most players can get an invite to.

I'm looking at the "2018 PG Top Prospect Games At Texas A&M" and the "2018 National Underclass South Showcase" and am wondering if there is much difference. I suspect the showcase at A&M will have mostly Aggie coaches and some smaller satellite schools or junior colleges while the other one in Tomball, TX will likely have more coaches from different schools such as Houston, Rice, SFA, San Jacinto etc. Does anyone know if there's much of a difference. Certainly if your heart is set on A&M, the choice would be pretty clear...

Just took a look at the PG Top prospect games at Texas A&M, mostly filled with players from Texas (predictable) and 13 players who show as committed on PG in attendance. Most of the players are "Nationally Ranked" 500 and lower. 87 total players on the roster. Did anyone end up going? What is the college coach attendance like?
