Why would anybody stop playing baseball? We've had tournaments every weekend since Nov 1. My son can't waite for High School baseball so he can cut down to a couple games a week.

Coconuts:
I know every time somebody says that they have had Varsity try outs in the fall somebody asks "how can you?". I'm asking "How can you?" If you are in Cal CIF rules forbid this, do they not?

We're starting winterball with a select number of wantabes Varsity players but the Varsity coach is not allowed to be there. hhhhhhhmmmmmmmmm

Well... For us in So Cal.. (CIF San Diego Section) Offical Baseball practice can not begin until Feb 21... So thats over 80 days away in my counting.

My son has just shut it down for a well deserved Break.. He's been playing full bore since last Jan... So for the next MONTH.. until day after Christmas... No baseball whatsoever...

But he is doing conditioning and agility workouts... and his HS will probably start pitcher's workouts soon...

But he also has an SAT test coming up so he'll be quite busy.

If I remember correctly, CIF SS (Southern Section) also restricts official practices till after winter sports have finished regular season. Unless my memory is failing, our Esperanza team never had official (i.e., after school) practices till around "Presidents' Day" in Feb ... seemed they always started that Saturday in mid- to late Feb ... some of the new players couldn't understand why the coach expected them to be available on that Monday holiday and they would have to make decisions about traveling with family, etc. on the 3-day week-end.

Of course, those boys who had made the team(s) during the December (6th period) try-outs, were still working out with the team in 6th period "phys ed" class.

We learn a lot from crayons:
some are sharp; some are dull; some are pretty;
some have weird names; all are different colors.
And they all have to learn to live in the same box.
Thats interesting. In Northern California, we often start the season (games) with key players missing because they're still in winter sports playoffs. I had no idea that it was so different.

And you guys have better weather!

I believe we can have practice (even now) as long as either 1) its not required practice, or 2) no coach is supervising or 3) no "equipment" is being used. #1 is usually used to start practice, but everyone knows you should be there if you want to be on the good side of the coach.

Are these rules set up by section? Thats the only way I can explain it.

As I understand it from my years involved in high school sports, each CIF section can make its own rules. For instance, in the Southern Section, a high school coach of a governed sport cannot participate with any of his players in that sport other than at school. So, we don't have high school coaches involved with any "club" programs in volleyball, etc. For baseball, except for the part of summer when American Legion and the like are in "season", I do not know of any other time that baseball coaches can work with their players. I believe it is similar in other sports.

It is confusing, but I guess since there isn't any true "state championship" in most athletics (I believe cross country would be one exception), we don't have to worry about a "level playing field" with different practice seasons, etc. Many people involved in the Southern Section believe that there are too many rules and that our CIF-SS needs to "back off", especially since these items don't seem to be an issue with other CIF sections.

Wierd, huh? noidea

In the CIF-SS oficial baseball starts Fe. 16, 2003. Our first scrimmage is Feb. 28 and the first game, Loara Tournamnet is Mar. 1. Coach held tryouts at lunch time for the fall spaorts guys and will do the same in Jan. I beleive you are authorized 2 official tryout periods. It can be after school, but then the kids need official paperwork and physical. We do it at lunch so that need is eleiminated, unless of course they make the team.
Some snow would be nice, but oh well. Our son's are usually throwing long toss, lt.weights, alot of running etc. They are a little ticked off at mom Frownfor cutting out 99% of the junk food in this house) They go hit with their friends. I make sure there are alot of other things for them to do also. They get alot of down time too!!! Gotta love it!! fpsmom
Justball,
Individual workouts started Tuesday at son’s college. He pitched a little and caught some bullpens. With him coming off two surgeries, and the few pounds he added during his inactivity, he’ll have a tough month ahead getting ready for opening day (Feb 13th).

XplayeR,
Thanks for sharing about your son’s (Tim’s) upcoming season. I think we are all on the edge of our seat waiting for the season to start. One question, explain what you mean by playing up and playing down? I don’t understand everything I read, and I tend to get a little confused. Sometimes I don’t know up from down.

In one thread you discussed your son and said:
He has gone through so many of those kind, that now he deliberately plays "down" just to get to play and be accepted

And now you say:
Tim is still developing, at 6'3" he is on the lean side at 184lbs. He has always "played up" even when he was a little guy. But he is not one of those kids who physically matured early.

Thanks and best of luck on the upcoming season!

Welcome to sunny California. Cool

UCR starts play on January 30 with a 3 game series against Santa Clara. We have an alumni game on the 24th but it doesn't fit AJ's rotation (he is going to start on Fridays) so he probably won't go till the 30th.

Can't wait ... greenjump

itsoutahere - nothing wrong with i-5...... been there... done that.... In fact, son's best gift was a 'major' gift certificate (from MNdad not me) to Best Buy - I believe the gift of choice will be a portable DVD player. Particularly good on road trips, so I'm told. Not that I would know - to date, I'm the driver...

As a fyi, Cal has their first game today - a 2pm start against BYU! Unfortunately, they are football/basketball crazy over there, so not much media attention, so I just might have to duck out of work early and check it out for myself - just to be sure I haven't forgotten what the game looks like! Big Grin
