Why would anybody stop playing baseball? We've had tournaments every weekend since Nov 1. My son can't waite for High School baseball so he can cut down to a couple games a week.

Coconuts:
I know every time somebody says that they have had Varsity try outs in the fall somebody asks "how can you?". I'm asking "How can you?" If you are in Cal CIF rules forbid this, do they not?

We're starting winterball with a select number of wantabes Varsity players but the Varsity coach is not allowed to be there. hhhhhhhmmmmmmmmm

Well... For us in So Cal.. (CIF San Diego Section) Offical Baseball practice can not begin until Feb 21... So thats over 80 days away in my counting.

My son has just shut it down for a well deserved Break.. He's been playing full bore since last Jan... So for the next MONTH.. until day after Christmas... No baseball whatsoever...

But he is doing conditioning and agility workouts... and his HS will probably start pitcher's workouts soon...

But he also has an SAT test coming up so he'll be quite busy.

If I remember correctly, CIF SS (Southern Section) also restricts official practices till after winter sports have finished regular season. Unless my memory is failing, our Esperanza team never had official (i.e., after school) practices till around "Presidents' Day" in Feb ... seemed they always started that Saturday in mid- to late Feb ... some of the new players couldn't understand why the coach expected them to be available on that Monday holiday and they would have to make decisions about traveling with family, etc. on the 3-day week-end.

Of course, those boys who had made the team(s) during the December (6th period) try-outs, were still working out with the team in 6th period "phys ed" class.

We learn a lot from crayons:
some are sharp; some are dull; some are pretty;
some have weird names; all are different colors.
And they all have to learn to live in the same box.
Thats interesting. In Northern California, we often start the season (games) with key players missing because they're still in winter sports playoffs. I had no idea that it was so different.

And you guys have better weather!

I believe we can have practice (even now) as long as either 1) its not required practice, or 2) no coach is supervising or 3) no "equipment" is being used. #1 is usually used to start practice, but everyone knows you should be there if you want to be on the good side of the coach.

Are these rules set up by section? Thats the only way I can explain it.

As I understand it from my years involved in high school sports, each CIF section can make its own rules. For instance, in the Southern Section, a high school coach of a governed sport cannot participate with any of his players in that sport other than at school. So, we don't have high school coaches involved with any "club" programs in volleyball, etc. For baseball, except for the part of summer when American Legion and the like are in "season", I do not know of any other time that baseball coaches can work with their players. I believe it is similar in other sports.

It is confusing, but I guess since there isn't any true "state championship" in most athletics (I believe cross country would be one exception), we don't have to worry about a "level playing field" with different practice seasons, etc. Many people involved in the Southern Section believe that there are too many rules and that our CIF-SS needs to "back off", especially since these items don't seem to be an issue with other CIF sections.

Wierd, huh? noidea

In the CIF-SS oficial baseball starts Fe. 16, 2003. Our first scrimmage is Feb. 28 and the first game, Loara Tournamnet is Mar. 1. Coach held tryouts at lunch time for the fall spaorts guys and will do the same in Jan. I beleive you are authorized 2 official tryout periods. It can be after school, but then the kids need official paperwork and physical. We do it at lunch so that need is eleiminated, unless of course they make the team.
Some snow would be nice, but oh well. Our son's are usually throwing long toss, lt.weights, alot of running etc. They are a little ticked off at mom Frownfor cutting out 99% of the junk food in this house) They go hit with their friends. I make sure there are alot of other things for them to do also. They get alot of down time too!!! Gotta love it!! fpsmom
Justball,
Individual workouts started Tuesday at son’s college. He pitched a little and caught some bullpens. With him coming off two surgeries, and the few pounds he added during his inactivity, he’ll have a tough month ahead getting ready for opening day (Feb 13th).

XplayeR,
Thanks for sharing about your son’s (Tim’s) upcoming season. I think we are all on the edge of our seat waiting for the season to start. One question, explain what you mean by playing up and playing down? I don’t understand everything I read, and I tend to get a little confused. Sometimes I don’t know up from down.

In one thread you discussed your son and said:
He has gone through so many of those kind, that now he deliberately plays "down" just to get to play and be accepted

And now you say:
Tim is still developing, at 6'3" he is on the lean side at 184lbs. He has always "played up" even when he was a little guy. But he is not one of those kids who physically matured early.

Thanks and best of luck on the upcoming season!

Welcome to sunny California. Cool

UCR starts play on January 30 with a 3 game series against Santa Clara. We have an alumni game on the 24th but it doesn't fit AJ's rotation (he is going to start on Fridays) so he probably won't go till the 30th.

Can't wait ... greenjump

itsoutahere - nothing wrong with i-5...... been there... done that.... In fact, son's best gift was a 'major' gift certificate (from MNdad not me) to Best Buy - I believe the gift of choice will be a portable DVD player. Particularly good on road trips, so I'm told. Not that I would know - to date, I'm the driver...

As a fyi, Cal has their first game today - a 2pm start against BYU! Unfortunately, they are football/basketball crazy over there, so not much media attention, so I just might have to duck out of work early and check it out for myself - just to be sure I haven't forgotten what the game looks like! H-Mom -
David Nicholson looked good and was 2 for 5 today -- Cal beat BYU 11-1. The real story, though was a freshman from the LA area, Brennan Boesch. Picture this.... you're up to bat for your first time in college -- first pitch comes your way and you take it over the left field fence for a two run homer. Second at bat, you single up the middle. Third at bat, you walk. Fourth at bat, ANOTHER 2 run home run, this time over the right field fence. Do you think he got a steak dinner tonight? Wow!
BTW, anything special going on down your way tomorrow?

Well now, let me think about what I have to do Friday ... biglaugh starting the day with breakfast out with hubby, then coming home to get ready for the big opening day of the '04 season. Son was here for dinner tonight and a relaxing evening in front of TV, watching a very funny movie with his family (and future family), getting tons of advice from Dad about tomorrow's event. Dad reminds him to eat a good lunch (he has classes tomorrow but is going to miss the last one to get ready) and Son looks at me and says ... Have I ever pitched before? Banter went back and forth and we were all very relaxed and laughing a lot with each other. Something tells me Son is ready for some baseball.

Please send good thoughts and wishes our way.

By the way ... what an impressive start for the freshman Brennan Boesch. Wow ... bet he was floating 3 feet off the ground. And won't you be glad to have some offense like that behind your pitcher next year?

URKMB,

I have dreams like that for my son's first college game. Big Grin

Mary Ann,

Ryan told us last night that he is now competing for playing time in RF as well as relief pitching...his competition in RF is a senior so we'll see how that unfolds. I know the coaches are going to play the guys who hit the most consistently so the opportunity is there for him. I hope he gets to play against you guys. I can't wait for the first game!

RHP05Parent - LOL!

OK - who's gonna be late for the Super Bowl party this weekend so they can see their favorite college team play? I know I am.

I remember last year watching Stanford/Santa Clara on Super Bowl Sunday and a no-hitter through 8 2/3 for Stanford. If I remember right, a Santa Clara freshman broke it up with a double in the gap with 2 outs in the 9th. I was only one a handful left at the end of the game. Baseball anytime over football for me. biglaugh
OUBsMom - you are so correct -- don't we all!!!(me with the pitcher equivalent, of course -- no home runs given up in my scenario.... Big Grin) JustBaseball - happy to oblige. Bay area sports coverage of college baseball is typically poor, particularly in the early season, although I would like to try and change that. Anyone want to help me launch a grass roots campaign in that direction?

I would be curious to know how the other California teams are doing. I did hear that Stanford won today, as did Cal (with another freshman hitting highlight as Chris Errecart hit a grand slam in the first inning today). I wasn't at the game so can't give you the play by play.

I can also report that although UC-Riverside dropped their first game today against Santa Clara (6-2), starting pitcher AJ Shappi pitched a solid six innings, allowing only one run on six hits and 0 walks. Should be a great weekend of California baseball!
Good thing there is nothing else going on this weekend biglaugh !

Thanks for the call. When my phone rang last night, I just knew it was you. Hubby was chuckling in the background at my "internet connections" ... met another internet chum (a Santa Clara mom that I am pretty sure I met here on HSBBW tho I can't remember her board name) at the game and will have breakfast with her this morning and the my NorCal buddy called.

Shap had a good outing ... said he still had some "first game" nerves (He doesn't have a clue what that means. I was so nervous, my hand was shaking while I kept score.) But he really looked good on the mound ... and the highlight for us "he doesn't have the velocity but boy can he pitch" parents ... topped out 2 times at 91 and once at 90, cruised most of his game at 86-87. Not bad for a guy who topped out last season at 88, heh? 14

So, for the team, today is another day. Hopefully the bats can come alive and we can support the pitching staff a bit better.

Thanks MA!
Glad to hear he had a great outting and represented "the club" Wink well!

I think you're having breakfast w/ 12sMom. Her son goes to Santa Clara. She's from Oregon.

Have fun!

Colleen ...

Had breakfast with 12sMom (and "12sDad"). We met briefly at Fri night's game, and had already made plans to meet for breakfast Sat a.m. They are wonderful people ... and had I known what her profession was, I might have asked for help while my kid was on the mound.

What is it about parents of right-handed pitchers that gets them so juiced up for baseball season? I don't know if it's a coincidence but if you look at the wonderful posters that I know, they have that common denominator. Hope the rains clears out of here. I was going to watch a scrimmage today with Mr. Bergesen pitching over at Encinal but they don't play in a lake. This fan is looking forward to seeing all of the posters' pitchers in the next few weeks. Thank goodness we have had college ball for the last three weekends to get our fix!
Any of you getting your games in this week? Our scrimmage today was cancelled - hopefully things will dry out enough by the weekend.

Good Luck to Matt on Saturday - hope he has a great game against Bishop O'Dowd. You all playing a tournament this weekend or just games?

Hope to see both your sons pitch this year, too - I'm reasonably sure I'll see one of them on the 18th.... so I'll send my good wishes along now Big Grin NorCalif Dad - I'll pass along your message to J&J and look forward to meeting you in a few weeks. We'll see about MV - the potential is there for sure, and the pressure is on our 04's from our s.c.r.a.p.p.y junior who throws heat! Just - are you playing any pre-season games out our way? We're playing Serra again this year in the pre-season, but over here this time. No more rain, please - it's time to play!
