I hope I'm not just beating a dead horse with my post, but this topic has been a major discussion in our family lately. One of my first posts here (not that I've had alot, though ) was asking when to move to travel from rec. We gave it alot of thought, and my son had a fun and successful all-star season, and decided to stay and wait a year until trying travel. Well, we figured out we made the wrong choice for our son, hopefully not too late for this upcoming year. We realized that he would not be able to play to his level and be challenged, watching him (numerous times) trying to make a play and not being able to throw the ball knowing that the person covering the base wouldn't be able to catch it. Also, the "fairness" of rec-ball is being unfair to him. It's good for the player who wanders to practice as it starts, takes his glove out, does what he needs to do, then puts the glove back and won't touch it until the next practice. The players like my son who beg to go to the cages, or play catch, or practice pitching every day aren't being treated fairly since they are putting so much more effort into it. The kid who missed 8 of 10 pre-season practices is playing the exact amount of time my son does when my son went every time. Is that fair? That's why rec leagues are losing the good players. Most of the teams are pretty much set right now, but we have a few tryouts/practices set up, so we'll see.
