Where and When are the playoff games?

Southeastern District tournament is at Nansemond River HS on Tuesday, May 26 and Wednesday, May 27. Two teams advance from SED, regular season champion and tournament champion, to the Eastern Regionals at ODU. SED will play Beach teams this year for their first games at Eastern Regionals.
With N. River's loss yesterday, the 4 district tournament teams are already set.

GB, WB, GF, IR will only battle out for seeding & reg. season champion this week.

* District champ can only be GB or WB.
* WB (2 Ls) can finish no worse than 2nd (b/c of the season sweep of GF)
* Believe it or not, GB (2 Ls) can finish 3rd... because...
* Grassfield (4 Ls) CAN come in 2nd if they beat Oscar Smith & Deep Creek, while GB loses to Kings Fork and WB... then GB becomes the 3 seed.
* IR (5 Ls) can only come in 3rd or 4th.
* If IR & GF tie for 3rd, it comes down to who wins district... if GB wins district, then GF gets 3rd seed... if WB wins district, then IR gets 3rd seed... however, it gets really complicated for IR to take the 3-seed due to the fact that they play WB Monday and will either beat them, hurting WBs chances of winning district, or lose to them, giving themselves 6 losses... but it IS still possible.

That 3rd seed can be huge to get.. it gives you the CHANCE to have to only win 1 game to get to regionals (if #1 beats #4)... whereas #4 seed HAS to win twice to move on.

GF,

It appears from an earlier posting in another thread that you are a “numbers person” or “baseball minutia person” (and I say that positively.) I refer to your posting in which you mentioned the number of runs which Great Bridge had scored through the posting date and the number of runs allowed through that same date. Well I am having trouble reconciling the Grassfield win/loss records of pitchers. It seems that the total of all the pitchers’ wins and all the pitchers’ losses should equal the team’s record. I think Grassfield’s overall records is 15-5. (Is that correct?) The most recent listings in the Virginian Pilot, in which both the win and loss records are posted, unless otherwise noted, reflect:

Ingrahm 6 – 1

Cox 7-3 (5/19 edition said 7 wins, know of losses to IR, WB and DC)

Ellis 2-1 (most recent paper report was 2-0 but a loss to KF occurred subsequently)

Outman 2-0 (reported wins at King's Fork and Hanahan HS)

Total 17-5 when GF’s record overall is 15-5. Interesting to have the pitchers’ wins total 17 and the team’s wins total 15. Also interesting because I suspect that Grassfield has not played 22 games with one to go (the one against Oscar Smith.)

Can you help with the reconciliation?

Western Branch 3 Indian River 0. WB struck first in the bottom of the second. Alex Hunt reached on a fielder’s choice, and Michael Donovan brought him home with his second home run of the year. In the fifth inning, Nick Thompson doubled and Bobby Barefoot drove him in with a single for WB’s third run.

The defenses looked good. In the top of the third, left fielder, Bobby Barefoot (WB), made a nice catch close to or in foul territory. Two batters later, Alex Hunt (WB) made a great diving catch in the right field to rob Matt Dickason of a hit and end the inning leaving one runner on base. In the bottom of the 5th, with Nick Thompson at second, Matt Dickason (IR) made a nice running catch in short left field to rob Shane Johnsonbaugh of a hit.

Both starting pitchers pitched efficiently. Shane Johnsonbaugh (WB) went the distance, throwing 81 pitches, walking only 1 and allowing 4 singles (by Leland Clemmons, Dean Ali, Will Heath and #6.) Will Heath for Indian River pitched 4 2/3 innings, throwing 79 pitches and allowing 3 runs on 7 hits. Matt Dickason pitched the final 1 1/3 innings facing the minimum of 4 batters.

------------1--2--3--4--5--6--7---R--H--E
Grassfield---0--0--2--1--0--0--0---3--3--0
O. Smith----0--0--0--0--0--0--0---0--2--1

WP: Ellis LP: Applin (1-4) HR: Ingraham

Grassfield: Rian Ellis was spot-on all night, throwing a mid-80s fastball and a 12-6 curve for strikes, keeping Smith off-balance all night. He threw 74-pitches, walked none, didn't go to a 3-ball count ALL NIGHT, and only went to a 2-ball count 3 times in 7 innings! He allowed just 2 hits and K'ed 10. Jason Ingraham got 2 of the 3 hits, including a solo homerun to CF in the 4th. Grassfield scored the other two runs on a wild pitch and a sac fly.

Smith: Troy Applin ('11) tried to match Ellis, tossing 81-pitches over 7 innings, allowing 3 hits, walking 2, and striking out 6. Both teams played clean with the only error being a strike three that reached for Grassfield. Tim Brock ('11) & Brandon Davis ('10) got the only 2 hits for Smith, with Davis' being an infield roller that could've been called either way... he gets home field scoring on the play.

Applin's been a tough-luck loser all season,being 1-4, but finishes with a season ERA of 1.97.
